Book The Life and Photography of Doris Ulmann

Download or read book The Life and Photography of Doris Ulmann written by Philip Walker Jacobs and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doris Ulmann (1882-1934) was one of the foremost photographers of the twentieth century, yet until now there has never been a biography of this fascinating, gifted artist. Born into a New York Jewish family with a tradition of service, Ulmann sought to portray and document individuals from various groups that she feared would vanish from American life. In the last eighteen years of her life, Ulmann created over 10,000 photographs and illustrated five books, including Roll, Jordan, Roll and Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands. Inspired by the paintings of the European old masters and by the photographs of Hill and Adamson and Clarence White, Ulmann produced unique and substantial portrait studies. Working in her Park Avenue studio and traveling throughout the east coast, Appalachia, and the deep South, she carefully studied and photographed the faces of urban intellectuals as well as rural peoples. Her subjects included Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, African American basket weavers from South Carolina, and Kentucky mountain musicians. Relying on newly discovered letters, documents, and photographs—many published here for the first time—Philip Jacobs's richly illustrated biography secures Ulmann's rightful place in the history of American photography.

Book Pictorial Photography from the Two Red Roses Foundation

Download or read book Pictorial Photography from the Two Red Roses Foundation written by Two Red Roses Foundation and published by Lucia Marquand. This book was released on 2017 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: -Includes many never before published photographs -Featured artists include: Edward S. Curtis, Arthur Wesley Dow, Adolf Fassbender, and Alfred Stieglitz This book examines the history of the Pictorialist movement in America through the outstanding collection of photographs, books, and journals in the Two Red Roses Collection. The catalog features artists who were pioneers of early art photography, including Edward S. Curtis, Arthur Wesley Dow, Adolf Fassbender, and Alfred Stieglitz. Evolving from the earlier school of Naturalistic photography, Pictorialism was the first major movement to champion the cause of photography as one of the fine arts, and usually featured soft-focus effects, mimicking the established art of painting. The growing interest in pictorial photography occurred during the Arts and Crafts movement, and shared an emphasis on hand-craftsmanship, merging art, life, and popular appeal. The proliferation of how-to books and periodicals, along with the emergence of numerous camera clubs in cities across the United States, furthered the interest in this type of art from professional artists and amateurs alike.

Book Photography and the 1851 Great Exhibition

Download or read book Photography and the 1851 Great Exhibition written by Anthony Hamber and published by . This book was released on 2018-09 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of the diverse role and impact of photography at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, drawing together two decades of research to create a broader understanding of the step-change in image making and distribution represented by The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations - the genesis of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.0While the Great Exhibition has received a variety of examinations, its role in exhibiting and furthering the cause and exploitation of photography and its impact on illustration has been largely underappreciated. More broadly, 1851 saw a massive change in information management: in the creation and dissemination of visually based graphic information characterized by images of the building, its contents and their display that collectively constituted the Great Exhibition. Photography played a critical role in this quantum leap.00Exhibition: V&A Photography Centre, London, UK (October 2018).

Book excerpt: A stunning survey of an international movement that dramatically transformed the art of photography. The hauntingly beautiful works of the Pictorialist movement are among the most spectacular photographs ever created. Beginning in the late 19th century, Pictorialist artists sought to elevate photography -- until then seen largely as a scientific tool for documentation -- to an art form equal to painting. Adopting a soft-focus approach and utilizing dramatic effects of light, richly coloured tones and bold technical experimentation, they opened up a new world of visual expression in photography. More than a hundred years later, their aesthetic remains highly influential. TruthBeauty contains 121 stunning works by the form's renowned artists, including Julia Margaret Cameron, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Robert Demachy, Peter Henry Emerson, Gertrude Kasebier, Heinrich Kuhn, Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz. Together, the collected works trace the evolution of Pictorialism over the three decades in which it predominated. This marks the first time that Pictorialist photographs by artists from North America, the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Japan and Australia are collected in a single publication. Scholarly essays, and a selection of historic texts by Pictoralist artists, complete this rich overview of the first truly international art movement. This book was published in partnership with the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Download or read book Faking it written by Mia Fineman and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2012 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is a long-held truism that 'the camera does not lie'. Yet, as Mia Fineman argues in this illuminating volume, that statement contains its own share of untruth. While modern technological innovations, such as Adobe's Photoshop software, have accustomed viewers to more obvious levels of image manipulation, the practice of "doctoring" photographs has in fact existed since the medium was invented. In "Faking It", Fineman demonstrates that today's digitally manipulated images are part of a continuum that begins with the earliest years of photography, encompassing methods as diverse as overpainting, multiple exposure, negative retouching, combination printing, and photomontage. Among the book's revelations are previously unknown and never before published images that document the acts of manipulation behind two canonical works of modern photography: one blatantly fantastical (Yves Klein's "Leap into the Void" of 1960); the other a purportedly unadulterated record of a real place in time (Paul Strand's "City Hall Park" of 1915). Featuring 160 captivating pictures created between the 1840s and 1990s in the service of art, politics, news, entertainment, and commerce, "Faking It" provides an essential counterhistory of photography as an inspired blend of fabricated truths and artful falsehoods."--Publisher's website.
