Book excerpt: For many decades, policy makers have struggled in closing the academic achievement gap present in schools across America. Most recently charter schools were integrated into federal law as one of many approaches to narrow the academic achievement and attainment gaps. Previous research has shown that there are differences in self-efficacy beliefs and that these beliefs can help account for the academic achievement and attainment differences that exist. Furthermore, with post-secondary goals and choices often made before students are upperclassmen in high school, middle school is the prime time for decisions. This study used an empirical research approach method to investigate the self-efficacy scores of students and its relationship to college-going self-efficacy using two research instruments: Bandura's Children's Self-Efficacy Scale, a questionnaire used to measure students' confidence on school-related tasks, and Gibbons and Borders' College-Going Self-Efficacy Survey, a questionnaire used to measure students' confidence on college related tasks. The results of the Pearson Correlation revealed a strong positive correlation between self-efficacy and college-going self-efficacy scores.

Book Transference of Efficacy Beliefs and Effects of Self efficacy performance Spirals at Group and Individual Levels

Download or read book Transference of Efficacy Beliefs and Effects of Self efficacy performance Spirals at Group and Individual Levels written by Laura Helena Porras-Hernández and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the large extensive literature reporting the effects of motivational variables on performance, very few studies have focused on the dynamics at the group level. None has empirically tested the transference of perceptions of group efficacy to different teams, nor have these studies taken advantage of computer mediated communications (CMC) as a research tool, where members of a group can interact in a virtual space, thereby suppressing many personal biases. Most of the discussions concerning the relationship of these variables have been held at the theoretical level, thus awaiting empirical testing. These issues seem to be particularly relevant to the new trends in education and human resources practices, which emphasize team collaboration and encourage or require the participation of individuals in multiple and diverse groups. The purpose of this research is twofold: (i) to investigate the effects of efficacy-performance spirals at the individual and group levels, as produced by the manipulation of feedback, and (ii) to study the transference of efficacy beliefs (about the self and about the group) to new working groups. Computer-mediated communication will be used as a tool to investigate these issues. The theoretical framework for this research is based on Bandura' self-efficacy theory, and Lindsley's et al . (1995) model of multilevel efficacy-performance spirals. According to this model, feedback, task uncertainty and task experience are factors affecting the generation of efficacy-performance spirals. Since, among several variables, the effect of feedback on self-efficacy-performance spirals at the individual level is well established in the literature, this variable was manipulated. Three research questions were proposed: (1) Do the efficacy-performance cycles generated at the group level affect individual perceptions of self-efficacy? (2) Do individual members transfer their perceptions of group-efficacy to other groups when faced with similar tasks? (3) Do individual members transfer their perceptions of self-efficacy to other groups when faced with similar tasks? Data was collected from a sample of 86 undergraduate students in a Mexican University. The virtual groups consisted of four to five students. These teams were divided into two conditions: with feedback and without feedback. Participants worked on two activities of collaborative writing, each to be performed with a different group. Various variables which, according to the literature, may affect self-efficacy were measured before, during, and after completion of the tasks. Appropriate multivariate techniques were used for data analyses. Results indicated a positive relationship between the perceptions at the group and individual levels while testing for transference of efficacy beliefs between both activities (r = 0.58, p

This book was released on 2020 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University students’ self-efficacy or self-confidence for learning and performance is crucial for their academic achievement. However, whilst the discussion on how to improve students’ self-efficacy in education practice has been highly prioritized, less research has been conducted on how to improve people’s self-efficacy in a targeted way, especially from the perspective of individual self-improvement. The question of how self-efficacy affects academic achievement still needs to be qualitatively examined to better understand the factors that influence self-efficacy (Zhang, et al., 2015). Therefore, in this study, the aim is to explore the beliefs of Chinese international doctoral students to develop an understanding of the impact of self-efficacy on their academic achievement and the methods they adopt to improve their academic achievement at the University of Auckland. Focus group and semi-structured interviews were employed as methods to generate data. The researcher transcribed the raw data, then employed thematic analysis and narrative description to analyse the data. Findings revealed that the relationship between self-regulation and academic achievement could be positive or negative, influenced by factors such as goal orientation, motivation, self-regulation and attribution style. It was also concluded that five different self-adjusting strategies were reported by participants to improve their self-efficacy: enhancing motivation, self-regulation, adjusting goal setting, positive attribution style, and psychological self-adjustment.

Book An Examination of Motivational Characteristics and Academic Self Efficacy Beliefs Conducive to Experiencing Flow

Download or read book An Examination of Motivational Characteristics and Academic Self Efficacy Beliefs Conducive to Experiencing Flow written by Alissa Kay Kim and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined the degree to which college students’ motivational characteristics and perceptions of their academic self-efficacy were related to trait flow. Participants consisted of students attending a large, public university in the Midwest and from those obtained from an online recruitment platform (n = 230). Several assessments were administered to measure flow, academic motivation, and academic self-efficacy. Results of the Pearson correlation demonstrated several positive and significant associations between flow and internalized subtypes of academic motivation. Additional positive and significant associations were found between flow and academic self-efficacy. A multiple linear regression was conducted to examine relationships between motivational characteristics, academic self-efficacy, and flow. Results indicated that internalized forms of academic motivation and self-efficacy are positively associated with trait flow. The findings offer potential avenues for improvement in academic settings.

Book Relationship Between Self efficacy Beliefs and Socio cultural Adjustment of International Graduate Students and American Graduate Students

Download or read book Relationship Between Self efficacy Beliefs and Socio cultural Adjustment of International Graduate Students and American Graduate Students written by Patrycja K. Gajdzik and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many benefits to the presence of international students on American campuses such as increase in diversity and economic contribution (AEC, 2000). However, many international students struggle with adjusting to a new culture (Hubbard, 1994) which may result in attrition, diminished performance, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships (Matsumoto et al., 2001). Researchers have found that students' beliefs and feelings about themselves are likely to positively correlate with their overall adjustment. Therefore the purpose of this study was to examine the cultural adjustment of international graduate students as compared to American graduate students and to examine the factors that contribute to self-efficacy beliefs in students from both groups. The research was conducted at a private, midsized university in Texas and a mixed method design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through the General Self-efficacy Scale, the Socio-cultural Adaptation Scale, and a demographic form. Qualitative data were gathered through responses to open-ended questions. The sample was stratified based on age and gender and consisted of 100 international graduate students and 100 American graduate students. Major conclusions include the following: general self-efficacy beliefs and students' perceptions of their cultural adjustment were not related to one another when examined with samples of international graduate students and American graduate students at an American university. In addition, there was no difference between the general self-efficacy beliefs of the international graduate students as compared to general self-efficacy (GSE) beliefs of American graduate students. Students in both samples scored high on GSE as compared to normative sample, and students' status did not appear to have an influence on their general self-efficacy beliefs. A statistically significant difference was found between international graduate students and American graduate students' perceptions of their socio-cultural adaptation, p

Book Efficacy Beliefs and Team Effectiveness

Download or read book Efficacy Beliefs and Team Effectiveness written by Ilona Berth and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a meso-contingency approach (Rousseau & House, 1994), this study examined the relationship between efficacy beliefs and effectiveness outcomes in a team context. Specifically, the interaction effects of self-efficacy and group efficacy as well as their direct effects on effectiveness outcomes at the individual level and at the group level were examined. Forty-two work teams (174 members and 42 supervisors) from several industries within Western Canada completed a survey assessing their efficacy beliefs, their attitudes at work, and their performance. The cross-level hypotheses revealed that self-efficacy positively related to individual effectiveness and to team attitudes but not to team performance. Group efficacy positively correlated with team effectiveness but not with individual effectiveness. Moreover, group efficacy as a shared belief and as a perception of individual team members was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between self-efficacy and team members' effectiveness. However, these moderation hypotheses were not supported.

Book Academic Self efficacy in Mexican American Community College Students

Download or read book Academic Self efficacy in Mexican American Community College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the academic self-efficacy beliefs of Mexican-American community college student. The study used a mixed-methods approach to assess academic self-efficacy beliefs, to determine the congruence of academic self-efficacy to academic skills, and to identify the types of experiences that shaped academic self-efficacy beliefs. The sample consisted of 428 Mexican-American students from a southern California community college. Academic self-efficacy beliefs were measured using the SELF-A and analyzed across a number of demographic variables. Congruence of academic self-efficacy beliefs to academic skill was determined by comparing scores on the SELF-A to self-reported academic outcomes. The sources of academic self-efficacy beliefs were explored through data obtained via additional survey items and through interviews conducted with 16 students from the original sample. Findings indicated that positive academic self-efficacy beliefs existed among the sample. Findings were mixed with regard to the level of congruence between academic self-efficacy beliefs and academic skill. The four sources of academic self-efficacy identified in past research applied to the academic self-efficacy beliefs of the students in the sample, but in ways that differed from what past research had suggested with other student populations. Additional sources of academic self-efficacy that were equally influential were identified. Given the poorer academic outcomes of Mexican-American community college students compared to other student populations, the findings of the study were used to propose cost-effective practices and programs intended to improve the academic outcomes of this group.

Book Contributions of Academic Contingent Self worth and Math Self efficacy to Self handicapping and Math Test Performance

Download or read book Contributions of Academic Contingent Self worth and Math Self efficacy to Self handicapping and Math Test Performance written by Brittany J. Thorne and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persons' performance-contingent appraisals of their self-worth and their task-specific abilities may interrelate to have invasive consequences that are far reaching, including less time persisting in the face of failure, task disengagement, lower achievement, defensive self-enhancement, and the erosion of interest and motivation. The present study investigated the individual and interactive contributions of academic contingent self-worth (CSW) and math self-efficacy beliefs (MSE) to self-handicapping behaviors and math test performance within a college student sample. Participants completed measures of the above self-related appraisals prior to their exposure to three practice math exam problems that were scored. They were then offered the option of (a) either receiving additional practice test problems before taking a graded and timed, 8-item math exam, or (b) proceeding directly to math exam without additional practice. Prior to choosing, they were informed that students who completed additional practice problems typically improved their actual math test performance. The analysis evaluated the contributions of ACSW and MSE scores on two outcomes, graded math exam performance and self-handicapping (refusing additional practice questions before taking the exam). It was hypothesized that academic contingent self-worth would interact with math self-efficacy to predict math exam performance and choice of whether to self-handicap. Results of the regression analyses indicated (a) that, controlling for students' gender and practice test performance, ACSW and MSE scores each significantly and positively predicted math exam scores, but their interaction did not significantly enhance math test performance, and (b) that neither ACSW nor MSE scores predicted self-handicapping behavior.
