Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic work of philosophy, James McCosh takes on the ideas of John Stuart Mill, arguing that Mill's empiricist and utilitarian philosophy fails to account for the fundamental truths of human existence. McCosh offers a powerful defense of objective truth and moral values, and shows how they can be reconciled with modern science and rational inquiry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book, John Stuart Mill examines the philosophy of Sir William Hamilton and discusses the principal philosophical questions in his writings. The acknowledged position of Hamilton at the head of the school of philosophy to which he belongs, has principally determined Mill to connect with his name and writings the speculations and criticisms contained in the present work. The justification of the work itself lies in the importance of the questions, to the discussion of which it is a contribution"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).

Book An Examination of Mr J S Mill s Philosophy

Download or read book An Examination of Mr J S Mill s Philosophy written by James M'Cosh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of Mr. J. S. Mill's Philosophy: Being a Defence of Fundamental Truth In May, 1865, Mr. Mill published an Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy, in which he unfolds principles fitted, as I think, to undermine fundamental truth. In the beginning of the following year, I published this work as a reply. In the third edition of his work, published in 1867, Mr. Mill replied to his critics, including myself. I place in Appendix II. To this edition my answer to Mr. Mill's strictures. The combatants are now brought to very close quarters. We now see clearly what are the questions at issue. The Appendix may be regarded as forming a sort of résumé of the whole controversy, not so far as it relates to Hamilton, but as it bears on what is far more important. Book excerpt: "John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), British philosopher, economist, moral and political theorist, and administrator, was the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century. His views are of continuing significance, and are generally recognized to be among the deepest and certainly the most effective defences of empiricism and of a liberal political view of society and culture. The overall aim of his philosophy is to develop a positive view of the universe and the place of humans in it, one which contributes to the progress of human knowledge, individual freedom and human well-being."--HC Books Online

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his much quoted, seminal work, On Liberty, John Stuart Mill attempts to establish standards for the relationship between authority and liberty. He emphasizes the importance of individuality which he conceived as a prerequisite to the higher pleasures-the summum bonum of Utilitarianism. Published in 1859, On Liberty presents one of the most eloquent defenses of individual freedom and is perhaps the most widely-read liberal argument in support of the value of liberty.
