Hardy (2006) defined self-talk as "(a) verbalizations or statements addressed to the self; (b) multidimensional in nature; (c) having interpretive elements associate[d] with the content of statements employed; (d) is somewhat dynamic; and (e) serving at least two functions; instructional and motivational, for the athlete," or in this case, the exerciser (p. 84). The purpose was to discover an individual's exercise self-talk and what thoughts may be preventing, or encouraging, him or her to regularly exercise. Specifically, the participants were asked questions about their exercise participation, their use of and frequency of self-talk during exercise, their beliefs about the perceived benefits and barriers to exercise, and their confidence levels related to exercising. Participants from three fitness locations volunteered to complete an online survey. There were 146 participants who completed the questionnaires. There were 91 defined adherers and 55 non-adherers. The results indicated that the adherers perceived more benefits to exercise, as well as had higher exercise self-efficacy. The results of the open-ended responses indicated that the most important factors appeared to be the type of self-talk that was used during the exercise (positive/motivational was the most common response across both adherers and non-adherers), and at what point during the exercise session the self-talk was used (20% of adherers reported using during difficult points in the session). The conclusions from the study can also be used to provide an indication of how self-talk could be use to encourage initiation and maintenance of exercise.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this pilot study was to examine exercise adherence in persons with Type 2 diabetes and how the stages of change in exercise are related to metabolic control. A sample of 28 persons with Type 2 diabetes in ages ranging from 53 to 77 (16 males and 12 females), was studied using the Transtheoretical Theory, of Change. Surveys on the Stages of Change, Processes of Change and Self-Efficacy, developed by Marcus, Rossi, Selby, Niaura, & Abrams (1992) were mailed to participants and followed-up with a telephone Stanford 7-day activity, recall. Subjects were assigned a stage of exercise adoption (Precomtemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, and Maintenance) based on answers to questions in the mailed survey. Metabolic control was related to stage of exercise adoption. Reported physical activity, ' also were related to stages of change in exercise. The telephone survey was used as an internal validation of the mailed self-report. Processes of change in exercise and self-efficacy also were explored in relation to stages of change. Distribution among the stages was unusual. Half of the participants fell into the highest stage of exercise adoption (maintenance). Marcus, Rossi, et al. (1992) only found 22% of their sample to be in this stage. Also two of the stages (precontemplation and action) only had one individual and therefore the stages were collapsed into three stages combining precontemplation with contemplation and action with maintenance for many statistical calculations. In addition, for some calculations, the group was divided into exercisers (Stages 1,2, & 3) and non-exercisers (Stages 4 & 5), The most frequent type of exercise reported was walking. Thirty-five percent chose walking alone and an additional 60% who chose walking or treadmill as part of their fitness program.

Book excerpt: The use of theoretical exercise-behavior change interventions in the workplace have demonstrated the ability to increase the level of the employees short-term exercise behavior. However, the effects of these programs on long-term adherence rates, and the cognitive-behavioral changes targeted by those interventions are relatively unknown. Furthermore, would a program targeting health and fitness improvements have a similar impact on rates of exercise adherence. The purpose of this study was to evaluate two educational exercise adherence interventions on rates of exercise and exercise adherence. Two eight week educational exercise adherence programs were developed for the purpose of this study. The first group the Mastering Adherence Program (MAP) focused on self-regulatory behavior skills and theoretical constructs derived from the social cognitive theory. The second program was the Fitness In Training program (FIT) who focused on improving or maintaining a participant selected fitness component(s). MAP Participants attended eight one on one educational sessions with a program educator to implement the program on an individual basis. The lessons were designed to target self-regulation and self-efficacy for exercise. The FIT group attended eight one on one educational sessions with a program educator to implement the program on an individual basis. These lessons were designed to utilize increase in health and fitness as the method of behavior change. Exercise and construct measurements occurred at pre-test, post-test, and follow-up.
