Book excerpt: This dissertation addresses academic challenges that international students from the Middle East encounter in graduate school. The issue of a diverse background as a disadvantage is supported by Pierre Bourdieu's notion of cultural capital. In order to address this, I examined how Middle Eastern students' diverse backgrounds impact their academic experiences. The findings contained stories of incidents in which students 'diverse linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds isolated and/or marginalized them from class participation and involvement. Data, which are drawn from in-depth interviews with eleven Middle Eastern graduate students, revealed that these students require various forms of capital such as English language proficiency (linguistic), knowledge of the field and contextual knowledge (educational), and knowledge of the system (cultural) to succeed academically in the United States. My study suggests that promoting awareness of international students' needs and expectations can be advantageous if one would like to better understand this group. Middle Eastern graduate students are isolated and marginalized in both their classrooms and in their social lives. Their quiet presence in classrooms is often translated as not being competent, rather than as being new to the educational system and its discourses. During the first few years of studying in graduate school, international students need support to learn the language and knowledge necessary to function in their new educational system. Hidden curriculum hurt international student's academic progress and well-being as well. The Middle Eastern graduate students in my study felt distressed and confused when they were unable to discern expectations for them as graduate students. International students also need to be involved in class activities. Class discussions should be embedding topics that address more global issues, rather than issues solely pertaining to the United States. Familiarity with international students' nationalities can help faculty to introduce topics for discussion that are related to their international students' country of origin. Faculty awareness of differences is key. It would help them to design class pedagogies and teaching styles so that students with diverse educational backgrounds would have greater success.

When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
