This book was released on 1998 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assessment of the plasticity-induced crack-closure concept is made, in light of the questions that have been raised on the validity of the concept, and the assumptions that have been made concerning crack-tip damage below the crack-opening stress. The impact of using other crack-tip parameters, such as the cyclic crack-tip displacement, to model crack-growth rate behavior was studied. Crack-growth simulations, using a crack-closure model, showed a close relation between traditional [delta]K[sub eff] and the cyclic crack-tip displacement ([delta][Dirac delta function][sub eff]) for an aluminium alloy and a steel. Evaluations of the cyclic hysteresis energy demonstrated that the cyclic plastic damage below the crack-opening stress was negligible in the Paris crack-growth regime. Some of the standard and newly proposed remote measurement methods to determine the "effective" crack-tip driving parameter were evaluated on middle-crack tension specimens. A potential source of the K[sub max] effect on crack-growth rates was studied on an aluminum alloy. Results showed that the ratio of K[sub max] to K[sub c] had a strong effect on crack-growth rates at high stress ratios and at low stress ratios for very high stress levels. The crack-closure concept and the traditional crack-growth rate equations were able to correlate and predict crack-growth rates under these extreme conditions.

The impact of using other crack-tip parameters, such as the cyclic crack-tip displacement or cyclic crack-tip hysteresis energy, to model crack-growth rate behavior was studied. Crack-growth simulations using the modified Dugdale crack closure model showed a close relation between traditional ?Keff and the cyclic crack-tip displacement (??eff) for an aluminum alloy and a steel over a wide range in stress ratios. Evaluations of the cyclic hysteresis energy demonstrated that the cyclic plastic damage below the crack-opening stress was negligible in the Paris crack-growth regime. Some of the standard and newly proposed remote measurement methods to determine crack-opening stresses and the "effective" crack-tip driving parameter were evaluated from crack-growth simulations made on middle-crack tension specimens. Here, analyses were conducted under both constant-amplitude and single-spike-overload conditions. A potential source of the Kmax effect on crack-growth rates was studied at high stress ratios and at high stress levels for an aluminum alloy. Book The Virtual Crack Closure Technique History Approach and Applications

Download or read book The Virtual Crack Closure Technique History Approach and Applications written by Ronald Krueger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the virtual crack closure technique is presented. The approach used is discussed, the history summarized, and insight into its applications provided. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.

Book Analytical and Experimental Study of Near Threshold Interactions Between Crack Closure Mechanisms

Download or read book Analytical and Experimental Study of Near Threshold Interactions Between Crack Closure Mechanisms written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an analytical closure model that considers contributions and interactions between plasticity-, roughness-, and oxide-induced crack closure mechanisms are presented and compared with experimental data. The analytical model is shown to provide a good description of the combined influences of crack roughness, oxide debris, and plasticity in the near-threshold regime. Furthermore, analytical results indicate that closure mechanisms interact in a non-linear manner such that the total amount of closure is not the sum of closure contributions for each mechanism. Book Plasticity Induced Fatigue Crack Closure

Download or read book Plasticity Induced Fatigue Crack Closure written by DL. Davidson and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements of plasticity-induced crack closure related factors were made on the aluminum alloy 7091-T7E69 using high resolution microscopy techniques. Two stress intensity factors were examined at a stress ratio of 0.1. The length of open crack as a function of load magnitude and the load required to open the crack to its tip were measured. Crack opening displacements and strains were determined for partially and fully open cracks. From experimental measurements, the residual stresses in the crack wake were computed, using two different methods. Models and simulations of crack closure were examined in light of the experimental results. Interpretation of these results gives useful insights into crack closure phenomena but does not allow predictions of crack closure magnitude to be made.

Book Results of the Round Robin on Opening Load Measurement Conducted by ASTM Task Group E24 04 04 on Crack Closure Measurement and Analysis

Download or read book Results of the Round Robin on Opening Load Measurement Conducted by ASTM Task Group E24 04 04 on Crack Closure Measurement and Analysis written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental Round Robin on the measurement of the opening load in fatigue crack growth tests was conducted on Crack Closure Measurement and Analysis. The Round Robin evaluated the current level of consistency of opening load measurements among laboratories and to identify causes for observed inconsistency. Eleven laboratories participated in the testing of compact and middle-crack specimens. Opening-load measurements were made for crack growth at two stress-intensity factor levels, three crack lengths, and following an overload. All opening-load measurements were based on the analysis of specimen compliance data. When all of the results reported (from all participants, all measurement methods, and all data analysis methods) for a given test condition were pooled, the range of opening loads was very large--typically spanning the lower half of the fatigue loading cycle. Part of the large scatter in the reported opening-load results was ascribed to consistent differences in results produced by the various methods used to measure specimen compliance and to evaluate the opening load from the compliance data. Another significant portion of the scatter was ascribed to lab-to-lab differences in producing the compliance data when using nominally the same method of measurement. Phillips, Edward P. Book Modeling the Interactions Between Multiple Crack Closure Mechanisms at Threshold

Download or read book Modeling the Interactions Between Multiple Crack Closure Mechanisms at Threshold written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fatigue crack closure model is developed that includes interactions between the three closure mechanisms most likely to occur at threshold; plasticity, roughness, and oxide. This model, herein referred to as the CROP model (for Closure, Roughness, Oxide, and Plasticity), also includes the effects of out-of plane cracking and multi-axial loading. These features make the CROP closure model uniquely suited for, but not limited to, threshold applications. Rough cracks are idealized here as two-dimensional sawtooths, whose geometry induces mixed-mode crack- tip stresses. Continuum mechanics and crack-tip dislocation concepts are combined to relate crack face displacements to crack-tip loads. Geometric criteria are used to determine closure loads from crack-face displacements. Finite element results, used to verify model predictions, provide critical information about the locations where crack closure occurs. Newman, John A. and Riddell, William T. and Piascik, Robert S. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second experimental Round Robin on the measurement of the crack opening load in fatigue crack growth tests has been completed by the ASTM Task Group E24.04.04 on Crack Closure Measurement and Analysis. Fourteen laboratories participated in the testing of aluminum alloy compact tension specimens. Opening-load measurements were made at three crack lengths during constant Delta K, constant stress ratio tests by most of the participants. Four participants made opening-load measurements during threshold tests. All opening-load measurements were based on the analysis of specimens compliance behavior, where the displacement/strain was measured either at the crack mouth or the mid-height back face location. The Round Robin data were analyzed for opening load using two non-subjective analysis methods: the compliance offset and the correlation coefficient methods. The scatter in the opening load results was significantly reduced when some of the results were excluded from the analysis population based on an accept/reject criterion for raw data quality. The compliance offset and correlation coefficient opening load analysis methods produced similar results for data populations that had been screened to eliminate poor quality data. Phillips, E. P. Book A Displacement Based Method for Predicting Plasticity Induced Fatigue Crack Closure

Download or read book A Displacement Based Method for Predicting Plasticity Induced Fatigue Crack Closure written by ME. Pawlik and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical method for predicting closure and its effects on thermomechanical crack growth has been developed. A finite element model, using linear-elastic fracture mechanics shape functions, is employed to predict crack tip displacements. The effective changes in stress intensity, and therefore crack growth, are obtained from the minimum and maximum crack tip displacement predictions. When a flaw is loaded in Mode I, a ligament of material ahead of the flaw yields, and a maximum crack tip displacement is computed. Upon unloading, plastically deformed material from prior plastic zones acts to limit the minimum displacements of the crack tip. The material is modeled as elastic-perfectly plastic. The yield strength of the material is varied based on the degree of constraint. The upper limit of constraint is a plane strain condition while the lowest constraint is a plane stress condition. The level of constraint is predicted by relating the stress intensity to the thickness of the component. Temperatures also affect yield strength, along with stiffness, and can cause the plastic zone to expand due to creep. During variable-amplitude loadings, and/or temperature changes, the irregular shape of the wake can be accommodated with this numerical procedure. The method has proven to accurately account for load interaction effects such as delayed retardation, crack arrest, initial accelerations following overloads, and the transient growth and stabilization of closure level with number of overloads. This method has been verified against data obtained in the literature, and data collected under the program in which the method was developed, NASA's High Speed Research [1].
