Book excerpt: Studies of the Allied Occupation of Japan have concentrated on the American involvement and influence as occupier. Often absent from the historiography of the occupation is New Zealand's role and its participation as a member of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. This dissertation aims to provide a historical analysis of the role of J-Force in the broader Allied Occupation, the relationship New Zealand had with the other members of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force and the American forces under General Douglas MacArthur. The limited number of published works on J-Force contributed to the motivation behind the subject of this dissertation: to capture the memories of J-Force veterans for posterity, and their experiences of a little-known event in New Zealand's history to provide insight in to a specific post-war period before the events of that era pass from living memory. This dissertation employs the interviews with four New Zealand veterans who were stationed in Japan with J-Force during the Allied Occupation from 1946-1947 and several personal papers to provide a deeper understanding of the role J-Force played in Japan. An account, in the first chapter, of the background to the creation of J-Force and the motivation of New Zealand officials provides a context for an examination of the position of J-Force within the broader military structure of the Allied Occupation Forces (Chapter Two). The dissent, on the one hand, within the British Commonwealth Occupation Force and, on the other, between BCOF and the American forces due to different aims and top-down policy is also assessed in Chapter Two. The personal experiences and memories of J-Force veterans in Jap[an form the subject of the final chapter.
