Book Human Performance Enhancement in High Risk Environments

Download or read book Human Performance Enhancement in High Risk Environments written by Paul E. O'Connor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of works written by military researchers on the human performance research being carried out in the military. Human Performance Enhancement in High-Risk Environments: Insights, Developments, and Future Directions from Military Research takes the breakthrough work being done by the military on human performance issues and presents it in a way that is applicable to a wider audience of high-risk professions and industries, including police forces, fire fighters, the security industry, military contracting, and more. Human Performance Enhancement in High-Risk Environments focuses on selection, training, safety, and interface design—essential steps in the process of putting the right people in the right positions with the right equipment to handle dangerous work. The book's 16 chapters are each written by military experts, emphasizing lessons learned from their own experiences and research, while highlighting the relevance of their findings to other domains in which highly trained personnel operate complex machinery with high consequences of error.

Book An Assessment of the Performance Based Measurement Battery PBMB the Navy s Psychomotor Supplemt to the Aviation Selection Test Battery ASTB

Download or read book An Assessment of the Performance Based Measurement Battery PBMB the Navy s Psychomotor Supplemt to the Aviation Selection Test Battery ASTB written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB) has been used to screen prospective aviation candidates for the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard since World War II. The Navy has continuously looked for ways to update and improve its aviation screening procedures and the latest supplement of the Performance-Based Measurement Battery (PBMB) currently under development is just one example. The Naval Operational Medicine Institute (NOMI) is currently investigating how well this test will assist with the difficult process of aviation candidate selection. This study was conducted to assess whether individuals with aviation experience would perform better on the PBMB than those with no aviation experience. Forty individual participated in this research, 20 had formal aviation training. The results showed that experienced aviators performed significantly better on eyehand coordination tracking tasks than the group with no aviation experience.

Book The Neuroelectric Selection of Naval Aviation Personnel An Evaluation

Download or read book The Neuroelectric Selection of Naval Aviation Personnel An Evaluation written by R. R. Stanny and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of devising rational means to select candidates for flight has been with us for over 75 years now. It has become more important as aircraft have become more complicated and training more expensive. Selection for flight in the U.S. Navy is based on considerations of academic histories, written tests, physical examinations, and biographical information. The net effect is a substantial improvement over random selection. Nevertheless, perhaps 30% of those who enter flight training do not finish (1). Hence there is continuing interest in improving the selection process. Possibly the first attempt to use the EEG to forecast the performance of naval aviators was carried out by Alexander Forbes and Hallowell Davis as a part of the Pensacola Study of Naval Aviators of 1940-1941 (2,3).1 Forbes and Davis examined the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of several hundred Navy flight candidates for signs of epilepsy. They found no reliable association between the presence of minor EEG abnormalities and later flight performance. (js).

Book Complex Visual Information Processing A Test for Predicting Navy Primary Flight Training Success

Download or read book Complex Visual Information Processing A Test for Predicting Navy Primary Flight Training Success written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuing problem in naval aviation is how to identify, prior to training, those individuals having the greatest likelihood to succeed in flight training. Since World War II the US Navy has been concerned with the development of selection tests to improve its capability to screen individuals desiring entry into flight training. Improved aviation personnel selection tests could reduce attrition, and consequently, the monetary losses associated with this attrition. Additionally, the Navy would expose fewer flight students to a potentially hazardous training situation. A research methodological problem associated with the development of candidate tests for predictive validation is: How do we design a test that measures abilities relevant for inclusion in validation studies? A methodology, Random Sampling of Domain Variances, was developed as a product of the Augmentation of Human Factors Engineering Technology Efforts Program. This methodology provided the basis for developing a complex visual information task designed to require many basic cognitive processing demands thought to be required in performing aviation display tasks. This complex visual display task should be further evaluated in a cross- validation study and then considered for implementation as a performance-based selection test. The method of Random Sampling of Domain Variances should be considered as a methodological tool in the design of future tests to be selected for validation studies. (sdw).

Book Performance Based Occupational Strength Testing for Candidate Navy Pilots Naval Flight Officers

Download or read book Performance Based Occupational Strength Testing for Candidate Navy Pilots Naval Flight Officers written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secretary of Defense has directed the military services to allow women to fly aircraft engaged in combat missions. The current inventory of naval aircraft was physically designed to accommodate a majority of the male population. Anthropometric standards from 1964 are regularly used for selection, but muscular strength standards for aviation do not exist. This work was done to aid the Navy in safely opening the anthropometric accommodation range for aviation by determining gender-neutral strength requirements for all applicants. The objectives of this study were to: (1) identify strength-critical tasks in naval aircraft, (2) develop data bases on current strength and anthropometric measurements of male and female aviation candidates, (3) develop gender-neutral strength standards to construct an aviation strength screening device, and (4) develop a physical strength enhancement program to assist individuals to meet or exceed the strength standards. Significant differences between male and female aviation candidates in upper or lower body strength and body measurements were found. Upon completion of this work, the strength screening device and aviation physical training program will be delivered to the Commanding Officer, Naval Aviation Schools Command.

Book Analysis of Naval Aviation Selection Test Data with Nonlinear Models Part 1 Parameter Estimation

Download or read book Analysis of Naval Aviation Selection Test Data with Nonlinear Models Part 1 Parameter Estimation written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is basically tutorial in nature and, as such, describes an algorithm for estimating the parameters of a nonlinear model. This algorithm is called 'simulated annealing.' The actual workings of this algorithm are examined in some detail. The reason for studying this algorithm is because statistical analysis of naval aviation selection test data has always relied on the use of linear regression models. Linear models represent only a small subset of possible mathematical models that could be used as an empirical tool to predict aviator performance. Specifically, the whole class of nonlinear models has not been addressed. Recent research into neural networks and parallel distributed processing has uncovered some interesting nonlinear models. We intend to reanalyze the test scores of student naval aviators with a nonlinear model borrowed from the neural network literature. We hope that this new class of nonlinear models will be a more powerful tool in predicting aviator performance and will result in an improved naval aviator selection test battery.
