Hespeler-Boultbee reveals Portugal's early Renaissance contact within the Ethiopian Highlands using a description of contemporary architectural vestige. What started as a mission of exploration and discovery for the Christian kingdom of the great Emperor Prester John and Portugal's search for an ally against Islamic forces developed into diplomatic, military, religious, cultural and most long lasting of all, architectural ties between Portugal and Ethiopia. This great search started with the overland route of Portuguese explorer Pro da Covilh that led him to the Ethiopian Highlands in 1493, thirty-seven years before Portugal's diplomatic embassy mission of 1520. The story within the stones can still be seen in the ancient Portuguese and Gondarine ruins which are still of great influence in today's architectural design in this region. J.J. He guided an Ethiopian army through territory unknown even to them and fought in Manchuria during the Boxer Rebellion. When he retired at age 33 to join a monastery, seven of his men followed him there. Later, he led a religious movement at Mount Athos, fought in WWI, and, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, was shot dead on his doorstep in the Ukraine. The odd shifts in his career, his qualities as a leader, and the puzzle of what motivated him first drew me to him. I was also drawn by the strangeness of the events — Russian exploration in Ethiopia, the Russian conquest of Manchuria, and a heresy battle in the twentieth century for which hundreds of monks were sent into exile. My historical sources included books by Bulatovich himself and over 25 hours of interviews with his sister, Princess Mary Orbeliani, when she was 99. The Name of Hero covers his life up through Manchuria. I will continue his story in two subsequent novels — The Name of Man and The Name of God.

In 1974 creeping dissension was whipped into military revolution by a hushed famine, deposing the old and frail ruler. While the new dictatorship proclaimed that the Emperor was under house arrest at the Menelik Palace, members of his family and his ministers were thrown into the cells of common criminals. deprived of the bare necessities of life. Sixty princes, ministers and high government officials were executed en masseand flung into an unmarked trench. The wives and mothers of men detained and tortured without charges were imprisoned, others forced to sell what little remained to them to pay for the bullets that had killed their loved ones."Meskel" is the true and poignant saga of a Greek family who lived to witness and record the devastating destruction of a beautiful country which was turned into a living hell by the tyrant, Mengistu Haile Mariam.

This interdisciplinary, ground-breaking book focuses on the experience of this journey, its meaning for the people who made it, and its relation to the initial encounter with Israeli society. It was just over five hundred years ago that Christopher Columbus in 1492 sailed the ocean blue. The islands on the western side are a mere 50 miles from the United States. Throughout time, events on the North American continent have had a major affect upon the history of the Bahama Islands as this well-written and intriguing story relates.
