Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Welsh Saints or the Primitive Christians: Usually Considered to Have Been the Founder of Churches in Wales In groping through this period of darkness, some glimmer ings of light may be borrowed from Bede, the contemporary writers Of Gaul, and perhaps from the Irish historians; and in compiling such a history, where authorities of the legendary kind must be consulted, a simple rule may be Observed, which, if does not always elicit the truth, will produce the mearest approximation to it, namely to take the story of the oldest writer, which also is generally found to be the most limited. The character of fable is progressive, and a story, which originally was true, is in most cases repeated with additions. This rule has been established with great clearness by the author Of Europe in the Middle Ages, (in Lardner's Cyclopaedia, vol. Iv. P. 67 observing the manner in which Nennius has been amplified by Geoffrey, he adds There is no greater difference between Geoffrey of Monmouth and Nennius, than between Nennius and Gildas. This fact is very instructive; it may enable the judicious investigator into the antiquities of ancient Britain, and of Britain even in the anglo-saxon period, to steer his way through the darkest path ever traversed by historian. Book A History of Christianity in Wales

Download or read book A History of Christianity in Wales written by David Ceri Jones and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity, in its Catholic, Protestant and Nonconformist forms, has played an enormous role in the history of Wales and in the defining and shaping of Welsh identity over the past two thousand years. Biblical place names, an urban and rural landscape littered with churches, chapels, crosses and sacred sites, a bardic and literary tradition deeply imbued with Christian themes in both the Welsh and English languages, and the songs sung by tens of thousands of rugby supporters at the national stadium in Cardiff, all hint at a Christian presence that was once universal. Yet for many in contemporary Wales, the story of the development of Christianity in their country remains little known. While the history of Christianity in Wales has been a subject of perennial interest for Welsh historians, much of their work has been highly specialised and not always accessible to a general audience. Standing on the shoulders of some of Wales’s finest historians, this is the first single-volume history of Welsh Christianity from its origins in Roman Britain to the present day. Drawing on the expertise of four leading historians of the Welsh Christian tradition, this volume is specifically designed for the general reader, and those beginning their exploration of Wales’s Christian past.

Book excerpt: Most books about Celtic saints are based on their legendary medieval lives. This book, however, is based upon our earliest surviving information: a study of the sites where these early Christians lived and worked. Archaeology, combined with early inscriptions and texts offers us important clues which help us to piece together something of the fascinating world of early Welsh Christianity. The book is illustrated with the author’s own evocative photographs of where each saint lived and worked. The reader is therefore drawn into the beautiful world which these men and women inhabited. Follows on from the popular A Dictionary of Celtic Saints and Celtic Saints of Ireland

Book The Island of Saints and Scholars

Download or read book The Island of Saints and Scholars written by Seán McMahon and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the description Insula Sanctorum et Doctorum was not actually written down until the sixteenth century, Ireland's fame as the island of saints and scholars had then been established for more than six hundred years. That reputation was won mainly in what might otherwise have really been the Dark Ages. The Christian faith which had collapsed over most of Europe with the decline and fall of the western Roman empire still survived on the rocky fringes of the Atlantic seaboard. The 'pilgrims for Christ' as these Irish voyagers called themselves, spent the rest of their lives relighting a candle in the darkness and in spite of terrible deprivations, not least homesickness, re-establishing not only Christianity but the glories of classical learning which had fallen into their safe keeping. This book lists both saints and scholars (often in the same personality), their foundations and the works that made the period Ireland's truly golden age.
