It was by Inspiration that all tr 1 has been discovered wheth' er in Science, Philosophy, Morals or Religion. Book Philosophy of Style

Download or read book Philosophy of Style written by Herbert Spencer and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Spencer's book "Philosophy of Style: An Essay" contains a brief essay by Spencer on the principles of writing well. Writing with style is the principal goal of all writers. And while style is something that each scribe must develop independently, there are also many bedrocks of good style that a writer can learn to incorporate through study and practice. Herbert Spencer's essay attempts to pass along the author's personal philosophy of good style for the betterment of writers and students. The main focus of Spencer's essay is on the correct positioning of words in a sentence. Writers should strive, "To so present ideas that they may be apprehended with the least possible mental effort." The essay is divided into two parts, and is concluded with a series of notes on writing well. Spencer's book is a valuable addition to the library of any writer or student. As should be expected from a book about writing well, the prose is tidy yet informative. Spencer is an expert, and any developing writer would be wise to head the advice provided in this brief essay. There are not many books you can read that will make you a more conscientious writer - this is one of them. "Philosophy of Style: An Essay" should be mandatory reading for all young writers. The simple stylistic suggestions will improve anybody's writing if properly implemented. As an expression of a personal philosophy and as a writing textbook, Herbert Spencer's "Philosophy of Style" is highly recommended. Book Philosophical Essays Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Essays Postscript - The death of William James, which occurred when the printing of this book was already far advanced, makes me wish to express, what in the course of controversial writings does not adequately appear, the profound respect and personal esteem which I felt for him, as did all who knew him, and my deep sense of the public and private loss occasioned by his death. For readers trained in philosophy, no such assurance was required; but for those unaccus tomed to the tone of a subject in which agreement is necessarily rarer than esteem, it seemed desirable to record what to others would be a matter of course. Book Knowledge Life and Reality

Download or read book Knowledge Life and Reality written by George Trumbull Ladd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knowledge, Life and Reality: An Essay in Systematic Philosophy Tempt at systematic results, which has been rather abnormally slow, has been preceded by prolonged study of the separate problems, the solutions of which need to be combined in the total result. However all this may be, my request is simply this: Let us both, reader and author, abjure all deference to the idols of the theater, ' as well as to the idols Of the cave, ' and try to frame and judge our philosophical Opinions according to the harmony Of the truths that are expressed in them. One other request seems to me equally reasonable. It is that a fair amount of candid reflection shall determine the mean ing, and the truth of the meaning, which has been put into the words. There is no inherent reason why philosophical opinions should not be made intelligible to any intelligent and thought ful, not to say educated, reader. But this desirable end can not be reached without a genuine effort at co-operation. Pro found philosophy may be taught in poetry, drama, and even in the novel. But if it is to be got out of these captivating forms of its presentation, the author cannot do all the work. In this book I have, for the most part, carefully avoided all technical language; and I have taken pains to make my meaning clear. But the very subject - since philosophy is the product of re flective thinking - requires the studious and reflecting mind on the part of those who make use of the book. If in any places it shall seem more difficult to understand - not to say, essen tially obscure, - than the nature of the discussion itself makes reasonable, I shall stand ready to confess my failure and to bear the blame. But I cannot promise or hope to be under stood by those who care only to be, for the moment, entertained; or who have neither the inclination nor the leisure to give to my efforts any measure Of careful and thoughtful attention. To those who are already at all familiar with the other writ ings on philosophy by the same author, as well as to those who may possibly be attracted to some Of those writings by reading this book, a further word of introduction may prove helpful. During the last twenty-five years, I have treated of the leading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Short-Story Has been paid to the history of fiction and to the principles of narrative art. In many of the leading American uni versities the modern novel has been serving as the subject for lectures and as the material for private study, in the course of which the Short-story received afair share of consideration. No doubt, it is in consequence of this incessant discussion of modern fiction and of its methods that the author and the pub lishers have been made aware of a de mand for the present essay, with such revision and annotation as might render it more useful, not only to the earnest student, but also to the casual reader. Book Essays on Truth and Reality Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays on Truth and Reality Classic Reprint written by F. H. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Truth and Reality I have been unwilling to include so many pages on Pragmatism. The subject certainly does not occupy a corresponding space in my mind. But the reader perhaps will recognize that, having been in a manner forced here to write in self-defence, I am no longer free merely to consult my own wishes. He will find, I trust, that the discussion, if too long, throws light on some points of interest; and in any case the remedy remains in his power. On the other hand, I should be sorry if the examination of 'Radical Empiricism' were left unread. It is a satisfaction to me, when approaching the end of my own career, to note (whatever school or tendency may from time to time be in fashion) the increasing devotion amongst us to metaphysical inquiry. There has been, I think, a rise in the general level of English philosophical thought such as fifty years ago might well have seemed incredible. I am the more resigned to add that the best which I can now myself expect to do is to collect some other scattered writings, as well as perhaps to republish those early volumes which I can no longer hope to re-write.
