Book excerpt: We have previously developed an equation of state (EOS) model called ChemEOS (Hakel and Kilcrease, Atomic Processes in Plasmas, Eds., J. Cohen et al., AIP, 2004) for a plasma of interacting ions, atoms and electrons. It is based on a chemical picture of the plasma and is derived from an expression for the Helmholtz free energy of the interacting species. All other equilibrium thermodynamic quantities are then obtained by minimizing this free energy subject to constraints, thus leading to a thermodynamically consistent EOS. The contribution to this free energy from the Coulomb interactions among the particles is treated using the method of Chabrier and Potekhin (Phys. Rev. E 58, 4941 (1998)) which we have adapted for partially ionized plasmas. This treatment is further examined and is found to give rise to unphysical behavior for various elements at certain values of the density and temperature where the Coulomb coupling begins to become significant and the atoms are partially ionized. We examine the source of this unphysical behavior and suggest corrections that produce acceptable results. The sensitivity of the thermodynamic properties and frequency-dependent opacity of iron is examined with and without these corrections. Lastly, the corrected EOS is used to determine the fractional ion populations and level populations for a new generation of OPLIB low-Z opacity tables currently being prepared at Los Alamos National Laboratory with the ATOMIC code.

The term dense plasma is used rather than strongly coupled plasma, since it is possible that at plasma conditions such that only a few levels can be observed spectroscopically the plasma coupling parameters are not large. Due mainly to their importance in theoretical astrophysics, the properties of partially ionized plasmas have been of interest for a long while. More recently, this interest has intensified due to the development of methods for producing partially ionized plasmas in the laboratory. This has opened up large programs of experimental investigation and of practical application. In this paper we consider detailed statistical mechanical methods that explicitly treat the distribution over ionic species and their energy level structure. These detailed approaches are generally characterized as being in the chemical picture'' when a free energy expression is minimized or in the physical picture'' when the starting point is the grand canonical ensemble. 52 refs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: I will discuss the expansion of various thermodynamic quantities about the ideal gas in powers of the electric charge, and I will discuss some cellular models. The first type of cellular model is appropriate for hydrogen. The second type is for Z> 1. It has the independent electron approximation within the atoms. These models are cross compared and minimal regions of validity are determined. The actual region of validity is expected to be larger. In the cellular models, the phase boundaries for liquid-gas transitions are found. For the second type of cellular model, in the part of the low-temperature, low-density region where there is not much expectation of validity of these methods, a non-thermodynamic region is found. I have devised a construction, similar in spirit to the Maxwell construction, to bridge this region so as to leave a thermodynamically valid equation of state. The non-thermodynamic region does not occur in hydrogen and it seems to be due to the inadequacy of the aforementioned approximation in that region.

The degree of ionization was taken as time-dependent with relaxation. A full set of magnetohydrodynamic equations was set up for such a plasma and solved after linearization. The dispersion relations obtained for timely and spatially homogeneous waves, which contain all possible wave types and are modified by appropriate members, contain terms for the mean degree of ionization, ionization energy, mean temperature, and relaxation time. If an external magnetic field lies in the direction of wave propagation, there is no effect on the longitudinal wave; however, a left-direction and a right-direction circularly polarized transverse wave forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Strongly Coupled Coulomb Systems was held on the campus of Boston College in Newton, Massachusetts, August 3–10, 1997. Although this conference was the first under a new name, it was the continuation of a series of international meetings on strongly coupled plasmas and other Coulomb systems that started with the NATO Summer Institute on Strongly Coupled Plasmas, almost exactly twenty years prior to this conference, in July of 1977 in Orleans la Source, France. Over the intervening period the field of strongly coupled plasmas has developed vigorously. In the 1977 meeting the emphasis was on computer (Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics) simulations which provided, for the first time, insight into the rich and new physics of strongly coupled fully ionizedplasmas. While theorists scrambled to provide a theoretical underpinning for these results, there was also a dearth of real experimental input to reinforce the computer simulations. Over the past few years this situation has changed drastically and a variety of direct experiments on classical, pure, strongly correlated plasma systems (charged particle traps, dusty plasmas, electrons on the surface of liquid helium, etc. ) have become available. Even more importantly, entire new area of experimental interest in condensed matter physics have opened up through developments in nano-technology and the fabrication of low-dimensional systems, where the physical behavior, in many ways, is similar to that in classical plasmas. Strongly coupled plasma physics has always been an interdisciplinaryactivity.
