Book An Empirical Analysis of Power in Retailer Manufacturer Supply Chain Relationship

Download or read book An Empirical Analysis of Power in Retailer Manufacturer Supply Chain Relationship written by Sushil Chaurasia and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increased outsourcing of activities, apparel retailers are gaining greater control over strategic activities, which were formerly the remit of manufacturers or which were the source of the manufacturer's competitive advantage. The study aims to investigate the factors that determine the extent to which manufacturers depend on retailers. Resource dependency theory has been used to prove that in a typical retailer-manufacturer outsourcing relationship in close culture countries like India, manufacturer's perception of a retailer's power is derived from the manufacturers' perception of its dependence on the retailer. The data was collected through in-person interviews through Likert scale-based structured questionnaire from 230 respondents of 128 apparel manufacturer units of India and its respective boundary person representing the apparel retailer. A majority of the channel behavior studies conducted in Western countries have supported the relationship of power of one, based on the dependency of the other. Our research findings also confirm the same. An implication of the research findings is that dependency may be used as a strategy in dealing with channel relationships in Indian marketing channels. Looking at the attractive apparel retail market and the manufacturers' high product diversity, manufacturers can completely skip passive dependency and engage themselves in active dependency. Also, the retailers cannot exert coercive power sources if the dependency is active.

Book Supply Chain Coordination under Uncertainty

Download or read book Supply Chain Coordination under Uncertainty written by Tsan-Ming Choi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-14 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Channel coordination is a core subject of supply chain management. Over the past decade, much research effort has been devoted to exploring the detailed mechanisms for achieving supply chain coordination under uncertainty, generating many fruitful analytical and empirical results. Despite the abundance of research results, there is an absence of a comprehensive reference source that provides state-of-the-art findings on both theoretical and applied research on the subject. In addition, with the advance of knowledge and technologies, many new topics on supply chain coordination under uncertainty have appeared in recent years. This handbook extensively examines supply chain coordination challenges with a focal point on discovering innovative measures that can help tackle the existing and emerging challenges. The book is organized into five parts, which include chapters on innovative analytical models for coordination, channel power and bargaining, technological advancements and applications, empirical analysis, cases studies and review. This handbook provides new empirical and analytical results with precious insights, which will not only help supply chain agents to understand more about the latest measures for supply chain coordination under uncertainty, but also help practitioners and researchers to know how to improve supply chain performance based on innovative methods.

Book The Impact of Key Retail Accounts on Supplier Performance

Download or read book The Impact of Key Retail Accounts on Supplier Performance written by Christian Hofer and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing literature suggests that the increasing concentration in the retail industry is allowing powerful retailers to exploit their weaker suppliers, which causes the suppliers' performance to suffer. This study takes a collaborative perspective of resource dependency theory and suggests that when suppliers engage in supply chain relationships with key retail account (KRA) customers, their performance may improve, depending on the varying levels of the supplier's and KRAs' market shares. The empirical analysis of data from two large retailers, Wal-Mart and Target, and a broad cross-section of their suppliers provides ample support for most of the hypotheses set forth in this paper: Suppliers that depend on KRAs for a significant share of their total revenues relinquish some of their leverage in the marketplace, but as the KRAs gain market share, their suppliers' performance tends to increase. Cumulatively, these results provide evidence of collaborative supplier-KRA relationships, such that a supplier's dependency on KRAs may positively affect supplier performance. This finding supports a more positive, symbiotic view of dependency, resulting in important implications for key account management, supply chain management, and retail research and practice.

Book Supply Chain Relational Capital and the Bullwhip Effect

Download or read book Supply Chain Relational Capital and the Bullwhip Effect written by Rong Zhao and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study is to conduct a large-sample empirical investigation of how relational capital impacts bullwhip at the supplier. The study uses mandatory disclosures in regulatory filings of US firms to identify a supplier's major customers and constructs empirical proxies of supply chain relational capital i.e., length of the relationship between suppliers and customers, and partner interdependence. Multivariate regression analyses are performed to examine the effects of relational capital on bullwhip at the supplier. The findings show that bullwhip at the supplier is greater when customers are more dependent on their suppliers, but is reduced when suppliers share longer relationships with their customers. The results also provide additional insights on several firm characteristics that impact supplier bullwhip, including shocks in order backlog, selling intensity, and variations in profit margins. Further, we document that the effect of supply chain relationships on bullwhip tends to vary across industries and over time.

Book Collaborative Promotions

Download or read book Collaborative Promotions written by Daniela Wiehenbrauk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promotions are at the same time beloved and feared by both food retailers and branded goods manufacturers in today’s retail environment. Beloved because they attract smart customers and generate an immediate effect on a brand’s sale. Feared because there is uncertainty about the competitors’ behavior and the actual customer demand leading to high forecast errors. For the retailer, this results in a doom loop of over- or understocking with high inventory costs in the supply chain. Collaboration between retailers and the manufacturer disentangles the doom loop. The thesis reveals the appropriate kind and timing of information and develops a so called Competition Index. Inventory in the supply chain is eliminated and the customer is served better at a lower price. Based on a joint inventory and pricing model and an empirical analysis, it shows that the supply chain efficiency gains from collaborative promotions result in a win for customers, retailers and the manufacturer.

Book Proceedings of the International Conference Theory and Applications in the Knowledge Economy

Download or read book Proceedings of the International Conference Theory and Applications in the Knowledge Economy written by Eduardo Tomé and published by Eduardo Tomé. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 923 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword TAKE 2016 is a dream that came true. In about six months, a group of friends and colleagues put together in an upcoming and very dynamic university a conference with 9 streams, 3 keynotes, and 3 special sessions. 60 papers presented, 6 posters and around 80 participants from 20 countries. This is awesome! I would like to deeply thank Aveiro University, the GOVCOPP research centre, the conference committee, the keynote speakers, the special session convenors, the stream leaders, the reviewers, the authors, and the administrative people for all their work and support. I want to have two special words one for Blazenka Knezevic without whom the website would not have been possible, the other for Gaby Neumann for work in these Proceedings. Scientifically, TAKE seems to be as important and new and far reaching. We don’t have shortage of models regarding the knowledge economy but we decisively lack to explore the relation between theory and practice. TAKE is a step in exploring that difference. We know that “Exact sciences find the best answers and social sciences give the best questions” (J.C. Spender) and we also know that “Knowledge Management is more preached by scholars than done by practitioners” (Aino Kianto). We assume the first idea and try to overcome the second. Hopefully TAKE 2016 will be a great success. Thank you for everything.

Book CSR for Retailers Led Channel Relationships

Download or read book CSR for Retailers Led Channel Relationships written by Fabio Musso and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyses the adoption of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies by small and medium manufacturers which are involved in supplying relationships with large retailers. The purpose of the paper is to examine CSR drivers within large retailers' supply chains. A quantitative empirical research was conducted focusing on the food sector, as a sector in which traceability, supplier's coordination and control are critical to the supply chain. Data collection was performed through a questionnaire addressed to 89 Italian SME manufacturers to explore the main factors influencing the adoption of CSR and the level of formalization of the related policies. Findings revealed the key role of large retailers for the establishment of a sustainable/ethical supply chain. An attenuation of the hierarchic/conflictual perspective in buyer-seller relationships emerged, with a reduction of margin-compression effects for smaller suppliers as a consequence of power imbalances. A relevant consequence of CSR is a relationship development model in which all the involved subjects can benefit, including smaller partners inside the supply chains.
