Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry written by S. F. Lacroix and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry Of the following work, the Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry is from Lacroix's Course of Mathematics. The new division of the circle being adopted in the original, a few alterations have been found necessary to adapt it to the sexagesimal notation in use in this country. Where there has been occasion to add any thing on this account, or to supply any thing by way of illustration, it is given in the form of a note, and the reference is made by an obelisk, the author's being always distinguished by an asterisk. The chapter on the Application of Algebra to Geometry is selected from the Algebra of Bezout. It was the intention of the compiler to have made use of the more improved treatise of Lacroix or that of Biot upon this subject; but as analytical geometry has hitherto made no part of the mathematics taught in the public seminaries of the United States, and as only a small portion of time is allotted to such studies, and this in many instances at an age not sufficiently mature for inquiries of an abstract nature, it was thought best to make the experiment with a treatise distinguished for its simplicity and plainness. The original being prepared for the use of the Marine and Artillery, those parts have been suppressed, which were not adapted to the purpose of general instruction. Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Plane Spherical Trigonometry written by Benjamin Peirce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Plane Spherical Trigonometry 1. Trigonometry is the science which treats of angles and triangles. 2. Plane Trigonometry treats of plane triangles. [B. p. 36.] 3. To solve a Triangle is to calculate certain of its sides and angles when the others are known. It has been proved in Geometry that, when three of the six parts of a triangle are given, the triangle can be constructed, provided one at least of the given parts is a side. In these cases, then, the unknown parts of the triangle can be determined geometrically, and it may readily be inferred that they can also be determined algebraically. But a great difficulty is met with on the very threshold of the attempt to apply the calculus to triangles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise of Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, in Theory and Practice: Adapted to the Use of Students One main object of the publisher is to furnish a treatise of trigonometry, plane and spherical, of a middle size between the concise elementary tracts containing the definitions and a few theorems barely necessary to the solution of the common cases of triangles, and the larger and more comprehensive works, designed for the use of mathematicians, or of students who have time, ability, and inclination to enter deeply into such curious and difficult speculations. Book A Treatise on Special Or Elementary Geometry

Download or read book A Treatise on Special Or Elementary Geometry written by Edward Olney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Special or Elementary Geometry: University Edition, Including an Elementary, and Also, in Part III., A Higher Course, in Plane, Solid, and Spherical Geometry, and Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, With the Necessary Tables The order of arrangement in Plane Geometry (chap. L), is thought to be simple, philosophical, and practical. A glance at the table of contents will show what it is. This arrangement secures the very important result, that each section presents some particular method of proof, and holds the student to it, until it is familiar. True, it requires that a larger number of propositions be demonstrated from fundamental truths; but who will consider this an objection? To such as consider it the sole province of geometrical demonstra tion, to convince the mind of the truth of a proposition, not a few theorems in these and ordinary pages must seem quite superfluous. To them, Pr0p. I., page 121, may afford some merriment. But those who, with myself, consider Geometry as a branch of practical logic, the aim of which is to detect and state the steps which actually lie be tween premise and conclusion, will see the propriety of such demonstra tions; and for each individual of the other class, a separate treatise will be needed, since no two minds will intuitively grant exactly the same propositions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Plane and Spherical: Trigonometry IT is not easy to adapt a Treatise on Trigonometry to all descriptions of Students; to state, in its beginning, within a small compass, and with their simplest solutions, those Propositions which relate merely to the cases of oblique-angled triangles, and then, on the ground of those propositions and by the method of their solutions, to proceed to investigations of greater intricacy. The Student, if he be supposed to possess a knowledge of the first six Books of Euclid, may thence, by a few easy inferences, d by the aid of some simple constructions, arrive most readily at the Trigonometrical solutions of the cases of oblique-angled triangles. If his views extend no farther, he cannot take a better guide than Ludlam or Robert Simson; nor proceed by any easier method than the Geometrical.
