Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by Silvestre François Lacroix and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Arithmetic Tm: first principles, as well as the more difficult parts of Mathe matics, have, it is thought, been more fully and c!early explained by the French elementary writers, than by the English; and among these, Lacroix has held a very distinguished place. His treatises have been considered as the most complete, and the best suited to those who are destined for a public education. They have receiv ed the sanction of the government, and have been adopted in the principal schools, of France. The following translation is from the thirteenth Paris edition. The original being written with reference to the new system of weights and measures, in which the different denominations proceed in a decimal ratio, it was found necessary to make considerable alterations and additions, to adapt it to the meas ures in use in the United States. The several articles relating to the reduction, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of compound numbers, have been written anew; a change has been made in many of the examples and questions, and new ones have been introduced after most of the rules, as exercise for the learner. Book The Equation That Couldn t Be Solved

Download or read book The Equation That Couldn t Be Solved written by Mario Livio and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-09-19 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Golden Ratio tells the “lively and fascinating” story of two nineteenth-century mathematicians whose work revealed the laws of symmetry (Nature). What do Bach’s compositions, Rubik’s Cube, the way we choose our mates, and the physics of subatomic particles have in common? All are governed by the laws of symmetry, which elegantly unify scientific and artistic principles. Yet the mathematical language of symmetry—known as group theory—did not emerge from the study of symmetry at all, but from an equation that couldn’t be solved. For three centuries, the quintic equation resisted efforts by mathematicians to find a solution. Working independently, two great prodigies ultimately proved that it couldn’t be solved by a simple formula. These geniuses, a Norwegian named Niels Henrik Abel and a romantic Frenchman named Évariste Galois, both died tragically young. Their incredible labor, however, produced the origins of group theory. The first extensive, popular account of the mathematics of symmetry and order, The Equation That Couldn’t Be Solved is told not through abstract formulas but in a dramatic account of the lives and work of some of the greatest mathematicians in history.

Download or read book Figuring Space written by Gilles Châtelet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Figuring Space Gilles Châtelet seeks to capture the problem of intuition of mobility in philosophy, mathematics and physics. This he does by means of virtuality and intensive quantities (Oresme, Leibniz), wave-particle duality and perspective diagrams, philosophy of nature and Argand's and Grassman's geometric discoveries and, finally, Faraday's, Maxwell's and Hamilton's electrophilosophy. This tumultuous relationship between mathematics, physics and philosophy is presented in terms of a comparison between intuitive practices and Discursive practices. The following concepts are treated in detail: The concept of virtuality; thought experiments; diagrams; special relativity; German Naturphilosophie and `Romantic' science. Readership: The book does not require any considerable mathematical background, but it does insist that the reader quit the common instrumental conception of language. It will interest professional philosophers, mathematicians, physicists, and even younger scientists eager to understand the `unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics'.
