Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the English Language Order of instruction, Shepherd's Elementary Grammar of the English Language, the same general plan being ad hered to in each. N o pains have been spared to exclude all irrelevant material, to render definitions clear, concise, and accurate, and especially to admit only examples of pure English into the models and illustrations. Some of the general principles of comparative and historical grammar have been introduced, so that advanced pupils may at least begin the process of tracing the growth and development of the language, its changes of construction, the decay of old forms, the rise of modern idioms. The exercises in False Syntax have been designedly limited to a few under each rule, and to auch only as represent clear and palpable viola tions of English usage. Many of the examples inserted in most grammars, to be corrected as False Syntax, are in perfect accord with the usage of classic authors, - the aim of the grammarian in such cases being rather to establish a subjective standard of excellence than to acknowledge the authority of reputable writers, - the sole criterion of lingu istic. Download or read book A School Grammar of the English Language Classic Reprint written by W. M. Baskervill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School Grammar of the English Language Only those who, by teaching English grammar, come into Close contact with the young pupil, can know the difficulty of securing a satisfactory text-book. The prob lem of making an elementary treatise that is scholarly as well as sufficiently simple is one not easy of solution. The temptation to make a subject easy by mechanical devices or by short-cut methods is strong with the teacher; and the writer who supplies the text-book is strongly drawn to those expedients that will make the manual merely the most teachable. On the other hand, there is a temptation to the student of historical English to sup pose the grammar school child not only eager for the intricacies of linguistic development, but able to com prehend them. Download or read book The English Language written by J. M. D. Meiklejohn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language: Its Grammar, History and Literature It is hoped that the book will prove useful in high schools, academies, and seminaries, as well as to candidates for teachers' examinations and civil service examinations. The various topics have been prepared upon the assumption that the stu dent has already studied a part of the work in an elementary form. The most salient features of the language have been de scribed, and minor details have been left for the teacher to fill in as needed. The utmost clearness and simplicity have been the aim of the writer, and he has been obliged to sacrifice many interesting details to this aim. The study of English grammar is necessarily becoming more and more historical. '1' here are scores of in ections and constructions and idioms which cannot be truly or adequately explained without a reference to the past states of the language, to the time when it was a synthetic or in ected language, like German or Latin. Book The Elements of Old English

Download or read book The Elements of Old English written by Samuel Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Old English: Elementary Grammar and Reference Grammar The primary purpose of the authors of the Elements of Old English has been to produce an introductory book which will facilitate and expedite the teaching and study of Old English in such classes as their own, composed of graduate and advanced undergraduate students. To attain this object we have, in the Elementary Grammar, selected and arranged the essential paradigms, in the order of their relative importance, into twenty-four chapters designed as progressive lessons. In this part of the book the less frequent variant forms have been omitted. All the grammatical information necessary to enable a student to begin reading freely is contained in the first seven chapters. Each chapter includes a reading selection adapted to the advancing capacity of the student, and accompanied by notes explaining those forms which have not yet been presented systematically. In the chapters the primitive and prehistoric Old English sound changes have been explained more fully on a historical and phonetic basis than is usual in such a book as this, partly in order to clarify and rationalize the apparent irregularities of the inflections, and partly in order to acquaint elementary students with the methods and principles of the historical study of language and linguistic change. In the Reference Grammar is given a systematic and ordered treatment of Old English phonology and morphology which serves to bridge the gap between the Elementary Grammar and such standard grammars as those of Cosijn, Sievers, Wright, and Biilbring. It was originally intended to include a considerable body of texts with notes and glossary; but to do this at present would render the cost of the book prohibitive. The Elementary Grammar has been used in mimeographed editions at the Universities of Chicago, Michigan, and Wisconsin, at North western University, and at other universities and colleges. It has been twice re-written, and is now issued with the changes suggested by experience and criticism. Further criticisms and corrections from instructors and students will be welcomed. Book The Child s Own English Book

Download or read book The Child s Own English Book written by Alice E. Ball and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child's Own English Book: An Elementary English Grammar Our semi-grammarless age - a period of conflicting opinions regarding the teaching of English in lower schools - has resulted in confusion of mind to many pupils, and in discouragement to many upper-class teachers. Because of the writer's firm conviction that the difficulties with the subject in disrepute are largely owing to wrong methods of presentation, an attempt is now made to approach it from a new angle. Two of the strongest factors in child-growth - love of play and a strong dramatic instinct - are used to assist in bringing life to what has usually seemed a "dead language," or, at best, a cordially disliked subject. The query of the anti-grammar group is always, "Of what use to a fifth- or sixth-grade child is knowledge of a noun?" The pro-grammar adherents agree that unless such knowledge is made a part of the child's experience in a vital, organic way, it is futile; but they believe that, as preparation for more advanced, critical study in later years, it is as essential to know early the fundamental structure of the English tongue, as it is to know geographical nomenclature, or the simple elements of arithmetic. Book Elementary Lessons in Language and Grammar

Download or read book Elementary Lessons in Language and Grammar written by Thomas W. Harvey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Language and Grammar: Being a Remodeled And; Revised Edition of an Elementary Grammar and Composition After a test of many years' successful use in schools, Harvey's Language Course still holds the place it has made for itself in the esteem of teachers who look for solid results. The fact that pupils studying this course go forth from the schools with a firmer grasp of the structure of the English language, a surer skill in the expression of their own thoughts, and a keener appreciation of expression in others, than is evidenced by students of some of the more recent books, has induced many progressive teachers to cling to Harvey's works in spite of newer methods of presentation. To satisfy the teachers who, while they faithfully ad here to the excellencies of the Harvey Grammars, yet appreciate the attractive features and pedagogical value of some more modern text-books on the subject, the pres ent revision has aimed to combine the old with the new, retaining the solid substance of Harvey's work presented in a form more conformable to modern demands. Download or read book Elements of the English Language written by Bernard Bigsby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the English Language: An Introduction to the Study of Grammar and Composition for Common Schools But the text-book on Composition should not only be an aid to the acquisition of correct expression, but a means of cultivating habits of thought and observation. With this end in view, the exercises should be on simple and familiar objects, if possible visible at the time of study, the child's attention being thus more readily awakened, and its interest sustained. The contents of Part II. Of this work seem to me to happily meet our requirements in this respect. By a well prepared arrangement of lessons on common objects, and exercises in comparison, memory, the senses, the results of experiments, the sources of things, their parts, and their uses, the Author has done much to elaborate a useful system of elementary training. Book An Elementary Grammar of the English Language

Download or read book An Elementary Grammar of the English Language written by John S. Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Grammar of the English Language: With an Analysis of the Sentence In this volume the author has selected from his larger Grammar those portions which are purely of an elementary character, and which are studied by beginners in first going over the subject. The whole of Prosody, all of the chapter on the Derivation of Words, and the fine print matter of the other portions, are omitted. On the other hand, copious explanations, and a complete series of practical exercises, are appended to the several definitions and rules. The knowledge of each rule and definition is thus thoroughly tested and impressed on the memory before the pupil is allowed to proceed to more advanced knowledge. The work, as now offered, is the result of long experience in the class-room, and of no little reading and study. The English language and its literature have been for many years the main subjects of the author's inquiry, and he has endeavored in this volume to give the results of his observations in the form which his experience as a teacher has convinced him to be the best adapted to the wants of the learner. A word as to the method pursued. The author has endeavored to bear in mind that he was writing, not a treatise for the learned, but a text-book for learners. For such a book, - The first and most imperative demand is clearness, - clearness of arrangement, and clearness of expression.
