Book Localized Weld Metal Corrosion in Stainless Steel Water Tanks

Download or read book Localized Weld Metal Corrosion in Stainless Steel Water Tanks written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly developed leaks within the TFC and TFD tanks (LLNL groundwater treatment facilities) were caused by localized corrosion within the resolidified weld metal. The corrosion was initiated by the severe oxidation of the backsides of the welds which left the exposed surfaces in a condition highly susceptible to aqueous corrosion. The propagation of surface corrosion through the thickness of the welds occurred by localized corrosive attack. This localized attack was promoted by the presence of shielded aqueous environments provided by crevices at the root of the partial penetration welds. In addition to rapid corrosion of oxidized surfaces, calcium carbonate precipitation provided an additional source of physical shielding from the bulk tank environment. Qualification testing of alternate weld procedures showed that corrosion damage can be prevented in 304L stainless steel GTA welds by welding from both sides while preventing oxidation of the tank interior through the use of an inert backing gas such as argon. Corrosion resistance was also satisfactory in GMA welds in which oxidized surfaces were postweld cleaned by wire brushing and chemically passivated in nitric acid. Further improvements in corrosion resistance are expected from a Mo-containing grade of stainless steel such as type 316L, although test results were similar for type 304L sheet welded with type 308L filler metal and type 316L sheet welded with type 316L filler metal.

Book Electrochemical Study of Heat Treated SS304 Stainless Steel is Simulated Body Fluid

Download or read book Electrochemical Study of Heat Treated SS304 Stainless Steel is Simulated Body Fluid written by Nik Mohd Nazairen Nik Cob and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is entitled about the electrochemical study of heat treated SS304 stainless steel in simulated body fluid environment. Metallic materials are generally used for biomedical devices for various parts of the human body. When a metal device is implanted into human body, it is continually exposed to extracellular tissue fluid. The exposed metal surface of the implant undergoes electrochemical dissolution of material at a finite rate due to the interaction with body environment. This interaction can lead to either failure of the implant or have an adverse effect on the patient resulting in the rejection of the implant by the surrounding tissue or both. In conjunction with that, it is important to improve the corrosion resistance and wear properties by conducting the heat treatment processes. The objectives of this study are, to study the corrosion behaviour of the heat treated SS304 stainless steel in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) as simulated body environment and also to investigate the effect of heat treatment process to the corrosion rate of SS304 stainless steel in PBS and HBSS as simulated body environment. Heat treatment process, which is carburizing has been performed with different temperature and time. Carburizing is a process of adding Carbon to the surface. This is done by exposing the part to a carbon rich atmosphere at an elevated temperature and allows diffusion to transfer the carbon atoms into steel. The electrochemical study was conducted using a potentiostat WPG1000, interfaced to a computer in PBS and HBSS used for simulating human body fluid conditions. SS304 stainless steel show increased in corrosion rate after the carburizing process in simulated body fluid due to the resultant formation of chromium carbides.

Book Corrosion Control

Download or read book Corrosion Control written by S. Bradford and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings undoubtedly became aware of corrosion just after they made their first metals. These people probably began to control corrosion very so on after that by trying to keep metal away from corrosive environments. "Bring your tools in out of the rain" and "Clean the blood off your sword right after battle" would have been early maxims. Now that the mechanisms of corrosion are better understood, more techniques have been developed to control it. My corrosion experience extends over 10 years in industry and research and over 20 years teaching corrosion courses to university engineering students and industrial consulting. During that time I have developed an approach to corrosion that has successfully trained over 1500 engineers. This book treats corrosion and high-temperature oxidation separately. Corrosion is divided into three groups: (1) chemical dissolution including uniform attack, (2) electrochemical corrosion from either metallurgicalor environmental cells, and (3) corrosive-mechanical interactions. It seems more logical to group corrosion according to mechanisms than to arbitrarily separate them into 8 or 20 different types of corrosion as if they were unrelated. University students and industry personnel alike generally are afraid of chemistry and consequently approach corrosion theory very hesitantly. In this text the electrochemical reactions responsible for corrosion are summed up in only five simple half-cell reactions. When these are combined on a polarization diagram, which is explained in detail, the electrochemical pro cesses become obvious.
