Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Deep Learning for Chest Radiographs

Download or read book Deep Learning for Chest Radiographs written by Yashvi Chandola and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep Learning for Chest Radiographs enumerates different strategies implemented by the authors for designing an efficient convolution neural network-based computer-aided classification (CAC) system for binary classification of chest radiographs into "Normal" and "Pneumonia." Pneumonia is an infectious disease mostly caused by a bacteria or a virus. The prime targets of this infectious disease are children below the age of 5 and adults above the age of 65, mostly due to their poor immunity and lower rates of recovery. Globally, pneumonia has prevalent footprints and kills more children as compared to any other immunity-based disease, causing up to 15% of child deaths per year, especially in developing countries. Out of all the available imaging modalities, such as computed tomography, radiography or X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and so on, chest radiographs are most widely used for differential diagnosis between Normal and Pneumonia. In the CAC system designs implemented in this book, a total of 200 chest radiograph images consisting of 100 Normal images and 100 Pneumonia images have been used. These chest radiographs are augmented using geometric transformations, such as rotation, translation, and flipping, to increase the size of the dataset for efficient training of the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). A total of 12 experiments were conducted for the binary classification of chest radiographs into Normal and Pneumonia. It also includes in-depth implementation strategies of exhaustive experimentation carried out using transfer learning-based approaches with decision fusion, deep feature extraction, feature selection, feature dimensionality reduction, and machine learning-based classifiers for implementation of end-to-end CNN-based CAC system designs, lightweight CNN-based CAC system designs, and hybrid CAC system designs for chest radiographs. This book is a valuable resource for academicians, researchers, clinicians, postgraduate and graduate students in medical imaging, CAC, computer-aided diagnosis, computer science and engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, bioengineering, and professionals from the IT industry. - Provides insights into the theory, algorithms, implementation, and application of deep-learning techniques for medical images such as transfer learning using pretrained CNNs, series networks, directed acyclic graph networks, lightweight CNN models, deep feature extraction, and conventional machine learning approaches for feature selection, feature dimensionality reduction, and classification using support vector machine, neuro-fuzzy classifiers - Covers the various augmentation techniques that can be used with medical images and the CNN-based CAC system designs for binary classification of medical images focusing on chest radiographs - Investigates the development of an optimal CAC system design with deep feature extraction and classification of chest radiographs by comparing the performance of 12 different CAC system designs

Book Accuracy and Reliability of Non linear Finite Element Analysis for Surgical Simulation

Download or read book Accuracy and Reliability of Non linear Finite Element Analysis for Surgical Simulation written by Jiajie Ma and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, the accuracy and reliability of non-linear finite element computations in application to surgical simulation is evaluated. The evaluation is performed through comparison between the experiment and finite element analysis of indentation of soft tissue phantom and human brain phantom. The evaluation is done in terms of the forces acting on the cylindrical Aluminium indenter and deformation of the phantoms due to these forces. The deformation of the phantoms is measured by tracking 3D motions of X-ray opaque markers implanted in the direct neighbourhood under the indenter using a custom-made biplane X-ray image intensifiers (XRII) system. The phantoms are made of Sylgard® 527 gel to simulate the hyperelastic constitutive behaviour of the brain tissue. The phantoms are prepared layer by layer to facilitate the implantation of the X-ray opaque markers. The modelling of soft tissue phantom indentation and human brain phantom indentation is performed using the ABAQUSTM/Standard finite element solver. Realistic geometry model of the human brain phantom obtained from Magnetic Resonance images is used. Specific constitutive properties of the phantom layers determined through uniaxial compression tests are used in the model. The models accurately predict the indentation force-displacement relations and marker displacements in both soft tissue phantom indentation and human brain phantom indentation. Good agreement between the experimental and modelling results verifies the reliability and accuracy of the finite element analysis techniques used in this study and confirms the predictive power of these techniques in application to surgical simulation.

Book Finite Element Modeling of Trabecular Bone from Multi row Detector CT Imaging

Download or read book Finite Element Modeling of Trabecular Bone from Multi row Detector CT Imaging written by Cheng Chen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The finite element method (FEM) has been widely applied to various medical imaging applications over the past two decades. The remarkable progress in high-resolution imaging techniques has allowed FEM to draw great research interests in computing trabecular bone (TB) stiffness from three-dimensional volumetric imaging. However, only a few results are available in literature on applying FEM to multi-row detector CT (MDCT) imaging due to the challenges posed by limited spatial resolution. The research presented here develops new methods to preserve TB structure connectivity and to generate high-quality mesh representation for FEM from relatively low resolution images available at MDCT imaging. Specifically, it introduced a space-variant hysteresis algorithm to threshold local trabecular structure that preserves structure connectivity. Also, mesh generation algorithms was applied to represent TB micro-architecture and mesh quality was compared with that generated by traditional methods. TB stiffness was computed using FEM simulation on micro-CT (μ-CT) and MDCT images of twenty two cadaveric specimens of distal tibia. Actual stiffness of those specimens were experimentally determined by mechanical testing and its correlation with computed stiffness was analyzed. The observed values of linear correlation (r 2 ) between actual bone stiffness and computed stiffness from μ-CT and MDCT imaging were 0.95 and 0.88, respectively. Also, reproducibility of the FEM-based computed bone stiffness was determined from repeat MDCT scans of cadaveric specimens and the observed intra-class correlation coefficient was a high value of 0.98. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of application of FEM with high sensitivity and reproducibility on MDCT imaging of TB at distal tibia under in vivo condition.
