Book RF based Indoor Localization in Sensor Networks

Download or read book RF based Indoor Localization in Sensor Networks written by Israat Tanzeena Haque and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book a Received Signal Strength (RSS) based indoor localization system, dubbed LEMON, based on low-cost low-power wireless devices is proposed, which offers better accuracy than the state-of-the-art. A simple RSS scaling trick is then used to further improve the accuracy of LEMON. Furthermore, we study the effect of the node orientation, the number and the arrangement of the infrastructure nodes and the profiled samples, leading us to further insights about what can be effective node placement and profiling. We also consider alternate formulations of the localization problem, as a Bayesian network model as well as formulated in a combinatorial fashion. Then performance of different localization methods is compared and again LEMON ensures better accuracy. An effective room localization algorithm is developed, and both single and multiple channels are used to test its performance. Furthermore, a set of two-step localization algorithms is designed to make the LEMON robust in the presence of noisy RSS and faulty device behavior.

Book excerpt: We considered the issue of indoor localization through the use of wireless sensor networks (WSN). We value not necessary the algorithm that provides the best accuracy but the one that provides a good enough level of accuracy in a simple and efficient manner. In the first part of our work we examined some state-of-the-art localization techniques that are deployable on wireless sensor motes. These techniques are evaluated to a set of criteria that an indoor WSN-based localization application must consider. In our investigation, we considered not only accuracy but many other factors that determine a suitable indoor WSN-based localization system. These factors among other things determine energy efficiency. We broadly separate the criteria list into two categories: efficiency-based and accuracy-based. We discovered that one of the techniques, Ecolocation, evaluates quite well to the efficiency-based criteria, but the evaluation of the accuracy-based criterions is not as promising. However, the inherent simplicity and potential for good performance (based on open environment results) make the algorithm quite attractive. We proceeded to modify the algorithm to improve its accuracy while maintaining its positive qualities. Our Weighted-Constraints algorithm, named as such due to the nature of the modification, performs in terms of average error 13.1% better than the original Ecolocation algorithm in an open environment. Furthermore, our modified algorithm shows it is more robust to noise compared to the original algorithm by perform on average 21.2% better in a noisy environment.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of wireless indoor localization for ubiquitous applications. The past decade has witnessed a flourishing of WiFi-based indoor localization, which has become one of the most popular localization solutions and has attracted considerable attention from both the academic and industrial communities. Specifically focusing on WiFi fingerprint based localization via crowdsourcing, the book follows a top-down approach and explores the three most important aspects of wireless indoor localization: deployment, maintenance, and service accuracy. After extensively reviewing the state-of-the-art literature, it highlights the latest advances in crowdsourcing-enabled WiFi localization. It elaborated the ideas, methods and systems for implementing the crowdsourcing approach for fingerprint-based localization. By tackling the problems such as: deployment costs of fingerprint database construction, maintenance overhead of fingerprint database updating, floor plan generation, and location errors, the book offers a valuable reference guide for technicians and practitioners in the field of location-based services. As the first of its kind, introducing readers to WiFi-based localization from a crowdsourcing perspective, it will greatly benefit and appeal to scientists and researchers in mobile and ubiquitous computing and related areas.

Book Indoor Localization and Mobility Management in the Emerging Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Download or read book Indoor Localization and Mobility Management in the Emerging Heterogeneous Wireless Networks written by Apostolia Papapostolou and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, we have been witnessing a tremendous evolution in mobile computing, wireless networking and hand-held devices. In the future communication networks, users are anticipated to become even more mobile demanding for ubiquitous connectivity to different applications which will be preferably aware of their context. Admittedly, location information as part of their context is of paramount importance from both application and network perspectives. From application or user point of view, service provision can upgrade if adaptation to the user's context is enabled. From network point of view, functionalities such as routing, handoff management, resource allocation and others can also benefit if user's location can be tracked or even predicted. Within this context, we focus our attention on indoor localization and handoff prediction which are indispensable components towards the ultimate success of the envisioned pervasive communication era. While outdoor positioning systems have already proven their potential in a wide range of commercial applications, the path towards a successful indoor location system is recognized to be much more difficult, mainly due to the harsh indoor characteristics and requirement for higher accuracy. Similarly, handoff management in the future heterogeneous wireless networks is much more challenging than in traditional homogeneous networks. Handoff schemes must be seamless for meeting strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the future applications and functional despite the diversity of operation features of the different technologies. In addition, handoff decisions should be flexible enough to accommodate user preferences from a wide range of criteria offered by all technologies. The main objective of this thesis is to devise accurate, time and power efficient location and handoff management systems in order to satisfy better context-aware and mobile applications. For indoor localization, the potential of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies as standalone location sensing technologies are first studied by testing several algorithms and metrics in a real experimental testbed or by extensive simulations, while their shortcomings are also identified. Their integration in a common architecture is then proposed in order to combine their key benefits and overcome their limitations. The performance superiority of the synergetic system over the stand alone counterparts is validated via extensive analysis. Regarding the handoff management task, we pinpoint that context awareness can also enhance the network functionality. Consequently, two such schemes which utilize information obtained from localization systems are proposed. The first scheme relies on a RFID tag deployment, alike our RFID positioning architecture, and by following the WLAN scene analysis positioning concept, predicts the next network layer location, i.e. the next point of attachment to the network. The second scheme relies on an integrated RFID and Wireless Sensor/Actuator Network (WSAN) deployment for tracking the users' physical location and subsequently for predicting next their handoff point at both link and network layers. Being independent of the underlying principle wireless access technology, both schemes can be easily implemented in heterogeneous networks. Performance evaluation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed schemes over the standard protocols regarding prediction accuracy, time latency and energy savings.

Book Indoor Localization Techniques Based on Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Indoor Localization Techniques Based on Wireless Sensor Networks written by Hyo-Sung Ahn and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this chapter, we presented a set of classifications of indoor localization techniques. We generated categories according to measurement attribute, location algorithms, and communication protocols. The classifications presented in this chapter provide a compact form of overview on WSN-based indoor localizations. Then, based on the classifications, we introduced server-based and range-based localization systems that can be used for the indoor service robot. Specifically, we presented UWB, Wi-Fi, ZigBee, and CSS-based localization systems. From actual experimental tests, however we found that the existing WSN-based methods have their own disadvantage. That is, Ubisense system is expensive and needs heavy hardware equipment. The Wi-Fi system (Ekahau) has a low accuracy and is only useful for the room-level localization. The CSS-based system is too expensive. Thus, this chapter introduced a localization method based on received signal strength index (RSSI).

Book Enhancing the Robustness and Security of Localization Schemes Through Effective Location Verification in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Enhancing the Robustness and Security of Localization Schemes Through Effective Location Verification in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Dawood Al-Abri and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition, we perform a security analysis on the proposed scheme to assess its robustness to various attacks that may hinder the protocol operation. Our results show that a high coverage could be achieved using a relatively small number of verifiers. Moreover, we demonstrate that the proposed protocol is robust against location spoofing attacks. Then, we study how to schedule the verification service, and propose a scheduling scheme based on random access. Results show a high service throughput while maintaining a reasonable response delay its performance is better than TDMA-like clustering-based schemes when the interference between clusters is taken into account. We then turn our attention to study the problem of the impact of localization error on the performance of location verification. We examine how our proposed CORVA protocol with respect to how the verification probability varies with error parameters. We also present an abstract model to study the problem in a more general setting. Based on the proposed model, we analyze four combinations of localization and location verification schemes. Our study indicates that an effective verification protocol must have a built-in mechanism to handle effectively the localization error present in most practical localization schemes. Finally, we focus on exploiting the location verification as a feedback mechanism to improve the localization accuracy. We propose several novel location verification feedback (LV-FEED) algorithms to improve the localization accuracy. Analysis of these algorithms shows that a significant improvement in localization accuracy can be accomplished in a few iterations of executing the location verification feedback schemes.

This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indoor localization is a research domain that aims to locate mobile devices or users in the indoor environments. More and more research has investigated to acquire the location information based upon existing Wi-Fi infrastructure. A technique of using current Wi-Fi data and a fingerprint database containing Wi-Fi fingerprints of desired locations for localization is known as Wi-Fi fingerprinting. Most current approaches for Wi-Fi fingerprinting depend on labor-intensive and time-consuming site surveys by professional staff or users to generate a fingerprint database of desired locations. Moreover, these approaches are not satisfactory for long-term localization of mobile devices in practice due to the costly and continuous update of the fingerprint database. In this thesis, we propose an approach to the indoor localization problem, in which we combine the Wi-Fi fingerprinting technique and the place learning technique to learn and update the Wi-Fi fingerprints of significant locations in an unsupervised manner. Significant locations are locations a user spent at least for a while (e.g., 10 minutes) and are most important and highly frequented in people’s daily lives. The conventional approaches use labeled Wi-Fi data intentionally collected by professional staff or users and learn Wi-Fi fingerprints of desired locations. Instead, the proposed approach uses unlabeled Wi-Fi data collected in a user’s daily life and learns Wi-Fi fingerprints of significant locations related to user’s daily trajectory and activities. We implement an autonomous indoor localization system WHERE based on the proposed approach. The system can automatically learn and update Wi-Fi fingerprints of significant locations, and determine the location of the mobile device when it returns to the learned locations. Moreover, we evaluate various measures of performance, in term of the location accuracy, the computational time, the power consumption, the size of a fingerprint database, and the system reliability in a practical use. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed autonomous indoor localization system WHERE is a reliable system for efficient use – being very low-cost to set up and maintain, and showing satisfactory localization performance.
