Book excerpt: International trade in beef under study in this dissertation is beef trade designated as trade in meat of bovine animals fresh, chilled or frozen in key trade statistics. Its volute more than doubled during the sixties and is estimated to rise to approximately three million metric tons by 1980. The general objectives of this study were to identify the most likely developments in the pattern of international trade in beef up to 1980, to determine marketing advantages for major beef exporters from the standpoint of transfer cost and to point out their potential markets. Special attention was given to the general impact of trade barriers on direction and volume of beef trade, the enlargement of the EEC, the new import markets in Japan, and U.S.S.R., and the U.S. and Canadian trade embargo on South American uncooked beef. To meet these objectives the transportation model adjusted to international trade was used to model world trade in beef for three time periods: a base period 1967, and two projected periods, 1975 and 1980. Using the approach of comparative statics, the optimum solutions under varying assumptions identified the equilibrium position toward which the world beef trade system will tend. In each case under study the optimum solutions provided additional information regarding marketing advantages, relative price levels, cost of non-optimum routes, minimum total transfer cost and gave the basis for computing estimates of other variables in question. ...
