Book Winds of Doctrine critical edition Volume 9

Download or read book Winds of Doctrine critical edition Volume 9 written by George Santayana and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical edition of a classic work by the renowned philosopher George Santayana evaluating key movements in American intellectual history. Winds of Doctrine presents six essays by the internationally recognized critic and philosopher George Santayana. The essays, edited by David E. Spiech, Martin A. Coleman, and Faedra Lazar Weiss, and introduced by Paul Forster, address the broad sweep of intellectual trends—or, as the title suggests, the ever-changing winds of thought—of the Spanish-born American thinker’s time. The topics range from the secularization of American culture to the rise of religious modernism to the “genteel tradition” in American philosophy, the subject of Santayana’s final lecture in America and perhaps his best known essay. The original Winds of Doctrine, published in 1913, was the first book published after Santayana’s 1912 departure for Europe. Santayana had felt stifled at Harvard for some time, and his long-contemplated resignation from academia released him from previous obligations and allowed him a new freedom to think and write. Much later, Santayana remarked on the significance of that choice to step away: “In Winds of Doctrine and my subsequent books, a reader of my earlier writings may notice a certain change of climate. . . . It was not my technical philosophy that was principally affected, but rather the meaning and status of philosophy for my inner man.” An insightful document of American intellectual history, supplemented with annotations and rich textual commentary, Winds of Doctrine is a vital and engaging survey of the religious, political, philosophical, and literary trends of the twentieth century.

Download or read book The Twenty Ninth Poem Vol 2 written by Daddy Dave and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Twenty-Ninth Poem: Vol. 2, author Daddy Dave dedicates a variety of poems, stories, and observations to his daughter in honor of her twenty-ninth birthday. As with his first volume, which was dedicated to his son, this collection offers additional unique observations about life. Written in free-verse, non-rhyming style, many of the entries reflect the mystic union between father and daughter: and then a moment later I blew a little harder and a little harder until finally I exhaled through my nose hard enough onto that little finger of yours that I made a slight honking sound, and you giggled. That was the seed of the magic, and within seconds the concept clicked with you, and you ran down the hallway showing off your newly acquired talent to your mother. ?from ?How to Blow Your Nose? No two children are exactly alike, and so this second volume differs from the first in that it includes some short stories, many written by the author's daughter when she was in the fourth grade and included here with minor modifications. Children and families are precious, and Daddy Dave encourages every parent to write down their own versions of unique stories so that they can be remembered, considered, and passed down to future generations.

Book Swami Vivekananda s Ved ntic Cosmopolitanism

Download or read book Swami Vivekananda s Ved ntic Cosmopolitanism written by Swami Medhananda and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Swami Vivekananda, the nineteenth-century Hindu monk who introduced Vedåanta to the West, is undoubtedly one of modern India's most influential philosophers. Unfortunately, his philosophy has too often been interpreted through reductive hermeneutic lenses. Typically, scholars have viewed him either as a modern-day exponent of âSaçnkara's Advaita Vedåanta or as a "Neo-Vedåantin" influenced more by Western ideas than indigenous Indian traditions. In Swami Vivekananda's Vedåantic Cosmopolitanism, Swami Medhananda rejects both of these prevailing approaches to offer a new interpretation of Vivekananda's philosophy, highlighting its originality, contemporary relevance, and cross-cultural significance. Vivekananda, the book argues, is best understood as a cosmopolitan Vedåantin who developed novel philosophical positions through creative dialectical engagement with both Indian and Western thinkers. Inspired by his guru Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda reconceived Advaita Vedåanta as a nonsectarian, life-affirming philosophy that provides an ontological basis for religious cosmopolitanism and a spiritual ethics of social service. He defended the scientific credentials of religion while criticizing the climate of scientism beginning to develop in the late nineteenth century. He was also one of the first philosophers to defend the evidential value of supersensuous perception on the basis of general epistemic principles. Finally, he adopted innovative cosmopolitan approaches to long-standing philosophical problems. Bringing him into dialogue with a galaxy of contemporary philosophers, Medhananda demonstrates the sophistication and enduring value of Vivekananda's views on the limits of reason, the dynamics of religious faith, and the hard problem of consciousness"--
