Reformation spirituality, which was different both from medieval Catholicism and late Protestantism, is itself little understood by literary historians, who have tended to look to medieval or Counter-Reformation ideas and practices or to a simplistic distinction between "Anglicans" and "Puritans" as ways of understanding the religion of the time. This study presents Reformation spirituality phenomenologically, from the inside. Just as Reformation spirituality reflects Herbert's poetry, Herbert's poetry illuminates Reformation spirituality, showing the experiential and mystical dimensions of an important religious tradition.

Book excerpt: The reason why readers would be so interested is because of the spirituality: Learning the spiritual side of life, how good God really is, and how to include the word of God into the equation; in every area of their lives, whether it be financially, physically, mentally, by faith, in which we walk by: Faith is simply believing that God is our source, and not the world economy. To understand that God has given us very things that we need to accommodate us in this life. Most things, we can do for ourselves because of the abilities that God has bestowed upon us; but the Heavenly things, we have to declare and decree from Heaven, such as when we pray; whatsoever we pray for, believe that we already received them, and then you will have them. You have to trust God first, before you receive whatever it is that you ask for in Jesus name. It is always have to be in Jesus name, if not in Jesus name, then you might have a delay, you see, that's how the gospel works. Jesus died for us to have the things that we are so deserving of, all we have to do is believe it, declare it, and decree it, and it shall be given to us. But, if you dont spend time in the word of God, then you have no clue what to expect, you have no knowledge of all the promises that God said yes to; there is over seventy seven hundred promises in the Bible that God said yes to, we just have to believe, and say yes to them in order to receive the promises of God; you see, it's simple when you know the word of God for your lives. I've study the word of God for the last ten years of my life. So I am a witness to the fact. And here's another fact, I use to wake up every morning with back pain, I would stumble to my feet, but, once I'd reach for my bible and started to read it, before I could get through the first paragraph the pain had vanished. Once I'd learn how to pray and study the bible, I haven't taken a pain pill since February of 2010. I would like for everyone to experience the goodness of God and the example of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. If only I knew back then, what I know now, I would have been committed myself to Jesus. I just pray that everyone will learn to give their lives over to Jesus. So that's how much I think that my book will be an inspiration to others. So yes, I am completely satisfied with my work, so I approve it in every way for publishing. I thanked God, for giving me the strength to endure the last two and a half years to complete this book; it has been a blessing and honor to credit this book to God Almighty. Book excerpt: In antiquity, “son of god”—meaning a ruler designated by the gods to carry out their will—was a title used by the Roman emperor Augustus and his successors as a way to reinforce their divinely appointed status. But this title was also used by early Christians to speak about Jesus, borrowing the idiom from Israelite and early Jewish discourses on monarchy. This interdisciplinary volume explores what it means to be God’s son(s) in ancient Jewish and early Christian literature. Through close readings of relevant texts from multiple ancient corpora, including the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Greco-Roman texts and inscriptions, early Christian and Islamic texts, and apocalyptic literature, the chapters in this volume engage a range of issues including messianism, deification, eschatological figures, Jesus, interreligious polemics, and the Roman and Jewish backgrounds of early Christianity and the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls. In this study of the phrase "son of God" as applied to Jesus of Nazareth, Christopher Bryan examines the testimony of various New Testament witnesses who used this expression to speak of him, and asks where they got it, what they meant by it, and how it might have been understood. In Bryan's view, any attempt to address these questions stands self-condemned if it does not point to both the words and works of Jesus himself in the memory of early Christians, and the Torah of Israel as then understood, centering on Israel's Scriptures. Of course Paul and his fellow believers did not proclaim Jesus in a vacuum. They proclaimed Jesus in the Roman Empire during the decades following the death of Augustus. With regard to the meaning of the phrase "son of God," what becomes clear, Bryan argues, is that whereas "Lord" (another expression frequently used in the New Testament for Jesus of Nazareth) reflects believers' sense of Jesus' relationship to them, "son of God" reflects their sense of his relationship to God. It is a title that reflects their consciousness of Jesus' holiness-that is, his "set-apartness," his consecration, and even his divinity. Readers of Son of God will gain a well-rounded understanding of classic and recent research in Christology and the New Testament, as well as an in-depth, historically situated view of the evidence that paints a clearer picture of what New Testament witnesses meant when they called Jesus "son of God."
