Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical History of Great Britain, Vol. 4 of 9: Chiefly of England, From the First Planting of Christianity, to the End of the Reign of King Charles the Second; With a Brief Account of the Affairs of Religion in Ireland The year following, the king, in his writs, directed to the archbishops and bishops, takes notice the pope had attempted to tax the English clergy, and ordered the bishops to assist in levying the money. His majesty complains of this as a new and unwarrantable imposition; that' the parliament had ad dressed him upon this head, and made a provision against such demands. He therefore requires the lords spiritual, under the highest forfeitures, to desist from executing the pope's bull, and not contribute themselves in the least proportion for that purpose. The last thing I shall observe under this prince is his majesty's writ issued to the high sheriff of Devonshire, and to the mayor and bailiffs of Exeter, to support the chapter of that see in the free choice of a bishop; and that those who dis turb the election should be committed. This order was sent to prevent the pope's provision from taking place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mr. Francis Barham, the translator, has achieved an interesting object, by ascertaining a genuine copy of this work and we have read with pleasure every line of a composition, which so clearly establishes itself as the prototype of the noblest poem in the language, Milton's f Paradise Lost.' Never did the genius of the blind old schoolmaster shine more brilliantly, than when we contemplate the manner in which it scared and expanded itself from the suggestive ground, which, from its importance and merit, ought certainly to be separately published. - Literary Gazette. He seems steadily, conscientiously, and right practically to have promoted what he conceived to be the cause of God and man. By noble means, he strove to com pass noble ends and if he sometimes was betrayed into errors Of judgment, we may safely assert in his favour, that even his frailties leaned to virtue's side. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical History of Great Britain, Chiefly of England, Vol. 1 of 9: From the First Planting of Christianity, to the End of the Reign of King Charles the Second; With a Brief Account of the Affairs of Religion in Ireland; Collected From the Best Ancient Historians, Councils, and Records; With a Brief Account of the Affairs Called on to prepare a new edition of Jeremy Collier's Ecclesiastical History, its editor is conscious that he is undertaking a task of great national interest. It is this reflection which tends to sweeten the severe and scrupulous toil of correcting the press, which might otherwise seem harsh and ungenial. Of all labours, the labor limœ, the labor ineptiarum, the labor de minimis, which fall to an editor's share, are at first sight the least fascinating or stimulating. But when he has the happiness to know that the work on which he expends his solicitude is essentially a noble work, when he remembers that it is a work which illustrates and ornaments its age and country, then he indulges a more cheery estimate of his literary undertaking; he elicits a delight from the very arduousness of the enterprise - the danger's self becomes his lure and excitement. There is "a natural and prompt alacrity which he finds in hardness," and his conclusion is satisfactorily summed up in the Latin paradox, "labor ipse voluptas." Such, at this moment, is the sentiment predominant in the editor of the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book An Ecclesiastical History of Great Britain Vol 5 of 9 written by Jeremy Collier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 539 pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical History of Great Britain, Vol. 5 of 9: Chiefly of England, From the First Planting of Christianity, to the End of the Reign of King Charles the Second; With a Brief Account of the Affairs of Religion in Ireland There were several surrenders of the greater monasteries made the last year. This affair was carried on with all the application imaginable; insomuch that by the beginning of this year almost all the religious houses were resigned to the crown. This being a very extraordinary revolution both in Church and State, it will not be amiss to open the scene, to enlarge upon the circumstances, and acquaint the reader with the detail of this surprising emergency. To assist this project, and make it go down the better with the people, the monasteries had a heavy charge of disorder and immorality brought against them. That the narratives of this kind were swelled beyond truth and proportion, may well be suspected from the mercenary temper of some of the visitors, who begged for this employment, as hath been observed already; besides, that several of the religious houses had a fair reputation, appears from authentic records, some of which I shall give the reader. To begin: John Apprice, upon his visitation of the abbey of St. Edmondsbury, in Suffolk, acquaints Cromwell - "That the visitors had nothing to except against the abbot's regularity: but it was reported, he diverted himself too much at cards and dice, was too expensive in building, and turned several farms into copyholds, and spent too much time in his country houses.
