Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Atlas of Economic Geography Where there are duplicate maps, some variant spellings have been given, but it has not been possible to do this on a large scale. Generally the spelling adopted is not what we consider the best in itself, but it is the one which most facilitates reference to the various Reports of commerce and industry in our colonies and in foreign countries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Geography I have placed at the end of this book a list of the works to which I am mainly indebted. Mr. Chisholm's Handbook of Commercial Geography must be mentioned here. To it I am under a deep sense of Obligation, as at every stage of my work it has been Of the greatest assistance to me. I have to express my thanks to the Oxford University Press for permission to reproduce their rainfall maps, which, I believe, will prove of value to students. Professor J. W. Gregory very kindly allowed me to make use of his map showing the geographical divisions of Australia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Principles of Economic Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Economic Geography Classic Reprint written by Ireland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Economic Geography This volume attempts to give little more than an outline of the principles of economic geography in a readable form. The scope of the subject is liberally interpreted in the belief that the deeper and wider the foundations the surer the edifice that can be built. For this reason several matters are touched on which are not often dealt with in works on economic geography. Statistical matter, as far as possible, has been avoided as out of keeping with the aim of the book. Moreover, statistics for recent years, even when available, do not illustrate the normal features of production and trade, owing to the dislocation caused by the war. It is hoped that the following chapters, by indicating that there is more in the subject than the description of places and their products, will help to justify the inclusion of economic geography in the higher branches of modern study. Properly understood and appreciated, economic geography is a help in the solution of many of the political problems of the time. The book should be read with the help of a good modern atlas, without which no volume on geography is complete. It is impossible to acknowledge all the sources to which I am indebted, but the list of books at the end, although not exhaustive, includes the principal works consulted. It may be added that an intelligent use of the daily and periodical press is the best way to keep abreast of developments in economic geography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Economic Geography There is a growing demand from the schools for textbooks dealing with commerce and industry. The difficulties which lie in the way of presenting these subjects to 'immature pupils are many: I. The facts to be presented are found largely in the form of tables of statistics which change from year to year. The mean ing and trend of these changing figures must be seized and stated in the form of safe generalizations. Book Principles of Economic Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Economic Geography Classic Reprint written by Ellsworth Huntington and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economic GeographyThis book begins with the simplest elements of economic geography and proceeds upward to those that are most complex. Everywhere, however, it goes back not merely to the plants, animals, and minerals that provide the basic commodities and give rise to the basic industries, but further to the physical conditions of earth, air, and water. It explains how these conditions exert a biological effect by limiting or encouraging the growth and development of plants, animals, and even human beings. Then it goes on to show how the combination of physical conditions on the one hand, and biological conditions on the other, influences the occupations, transportation, mode of life, and other activities of all human beings, no matter where they live.In thus going from the simple to the complex three main lines of thought are braided into a single cord. Along one line we survey the world from regions of low productivity, scanty population, and limited occupations to those of high productivity, where a great many people get a living by means of highly diverse and numerous occupa tions. Along another line we rise in the scale of organic life, beginning with plants and the principles which govern their distribution and use, passing next to animals, and then discovering how closely man conforms to the principles which govern the distribution Of the rest of organic life. The third strand in the braided cord of this book consists of human occupations-which tend to be simple in regions of low productivity where man relies on only a few types of resources, but become more and more complex in regions of high productivity as man learns to use not only plants and animals, but also minerals of all sorts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
