Book The Greening of Golf

Download or read book The Greening of Golf written by Brad Millington and published by Globalizing Sport Studies. This book was released on 2016 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Golf is a major global industry. It is played by more than 60 million worldwide, and there are more than 32,000 courses across the globe in 140 countries including Africa, Central America and Central Asia. It is a sport that has particularly appealed to the wealthy and powerful, though it isincreasingly successful in attracting both golfers and spectators from a wide range of demographics. Golf has attracted criticism regarding its impact on the environment, with particular concerns about its use of pesticides and the resulting effect on both wildlife and humans, and its excessive useof water. The golf industry has, over time, responded to these and other concerns by stressing their capacity for recognizing and dealing with environmental problems. There are, however, reasons to be sceptical about the golf industry's environmental leadership, or, indeed, corporateenvironmentalism in general. This book looks at the power relationships in and around golf examining whether the industry has demonstrated such leadership on environmental matters that the government can trust them to make weighty decisions that have implications for public health, and what it isabout sport and leisure in general and golf in particular that has inspired such latitude from government. This is the first comprehensive study of the varying impacts of golf on the environment, It is based on extensive empirical research, including interviews with major stakeholders in the golf industry and members of protest groups. The authors examine golf as a sport and as a global industry, drawingon three discrete literatures - the study of sport as a global social movement, environmental sociology and the study of corporate environmentalism.

Book The Role of Certification in Promoting Sustainable Golf Courses

Download or read book The Role of Certification in Promoting Sustainable Golf Courses written by Alex Morris and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With current sustainability goals, changing the trends of golf course design and management is an important issue. Golf courses are a good focus because they are important socially, economically, and environmentally. This paper investigates Audubon International golf course conservation certification's role in assisting golf courses ecological well-being; and how this influences sustainability trends. A research review shows Audubon International is up to date on resource conservation practices. Consumers are important in reinforcing the trend of courses perusing certification. Consumer data is still needed to indicate if environmentally friendly design is highly demanded. If so, these courses will not only better conserve resources, but also gain a competitive advantage over other golf facilities and become more economically viable. Golf courses are already municipal revenue and environmental assets, conservation certification can further help these facilities achieve sustainability. Included is a case study of two courses within the same municipality that show higher revenue at the certified course. This reflects some support from the Jefferson County Open Space Fund for the courses outstanding wildlife habitate, but also likely the consumer's enjoyment of the course. However, it remains unknown if this support is in response to the conservation certification specifically.
