Book Agricultural Recycling of Sewage Sludge and the Environment

Download or read book Agricultural Recycling of Sewage Sludge and the Environment written by Stephen Russel Smith and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sewage sludge application to land is the principal way of deriving a beneficial use for sludge by recycling plant nutrients and organic matter for crop production. It is becoming ever more important as other options for the disposal of sewage sludge are diminishing. Agricultural application also provides a cost-effective method of sludge disposal, but it is essential that sludge recycling in agriculture is regulated to minimize potential environmental problems. This book, based on work funded by the Foundation for Water Research, provides an overview of the environmental impact of sludge application to agricultural land and relates it to other accepted agricultural practices. It puts the potential environmental effects into perspective and distinguishes between perceived and real risk. It is a significant contribution to thinking on this increasingly important topic and is relevant to students and researchers in soil, crop and environmental science. It will also be vital for all those involved in the waste and water industries.

Book excerpt: Sewage sludge is the product resulting from wastewater treatment plants and aquaculture systems. It is an abundant waste biomass, as its production keeps increasing due to population growth, particularly in developing countries and intensified wastewater treatment plants in the developed world due to industrialisation. Effective management and handling of sewage sludge in an environmentally friendly way has become a matter of increasing importance globally, due to the potential health risks on the environment. Importantly, sewage sludge contains large amounts of organic components and nutrients; hence, resource recovery from such an abundant biomass is necessary. This comprehensive book presents an assessment into the impact of sewage sludge on the environment and provides the various treatment options for converting the sludge into useful resources. Biochemical (or biological) and thermochemical (or thermal) methods of sewage sludge treatment are covered. Through contributions from experts in diverse fields, this book has been organised to suit a variety of readers, including professionals and students who are interested in sewage sludge treatment as well as resource recovery from sewage sludge by using different and innovative technologies.

Book Recycling and Reuse of Sewage Sludge

Download or read book Recycling and Reuse of Sewage Sludge written by R.K Dhir and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Varying degrees of environmental impact by sewage sludge disposals alternatives, present challenges for waste management practice and policy. Many regulating bodies throughout the world are implementing measures which actively promote environmentally sound and economically viable routes to convert this waste into a valuable resource. These provide opportunities, but at the same time, given the nature of the material and obstacles that may exist, require that responsible and proven practices are followed. This book presents the proceedings of an International Symposium organised by the Concrete Technology Unit, University of Dundee, which brings together some of the worlds leading experts in the field of sewage sludge recycling.

Book Application of the Sewage Sludge in Agriculture

Download or read book Application of the Sewage Sludge in Agriculture written by Olga Muter and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disposal of sewage sludge, which is a by-product of wastewater treatment, has become one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. Conversion of sewage sludge to a soil amendment can be performed by a broad spectrum of methods, which greatly differ by substrate/amendment composition, treatment time, and physicochemical conditions. The book chapter is focused on (i) environmental and legislative aspects of sewage sludge application in agriculture; (ii) risk factors related to the abundance of pathogens in sewage sludge and methods of SS hygienization; (iii) optimization of the use of SS-derived fertilizers. Application of sewage sludge in combination with mineral fertilizers positively influenced crop growth and soil microbiological activity. An environmental impact of sewage sludge related to its disposal to agricultural areas has been analyzed in terms of global warming, ecotoxicity, and other internationally recognized issues. Narrowly targeted measures may aggravate the situation. Some site-specific factors make sewage sludge unique, hence this specificity must be considered to predict the outcome of its treatment. Determination of these factors remains challenging. Therefore, the complexity of sewage sludge can be reduced by employing integrated biorefinery approaches that will result in circular bioeconomy and industrial ecology solutions.
