Book Examining Billy Graham s Theology of Evangelism

Download or read book Examining Billy Graham s Theology of Evangelism written by Thomas P. Johnston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-03-12 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Examining Billy Graham's Theology of Evangelism' was written to advance an unbiased understanding of Billy Graham's theology and practice. Theological examination of Graham's sermons revealed four distinct eras in his theology and practice: -The Early-Early Graham (pre-1949) -The Early Graham (1949-1955) -The Middle Graham (1955-1965) -The Later Graham (1965-present) In each of these eras Graham portrayed a discernible and distinct approach to defining evangelism, theological nomenclature, and cooperative strategy. No literature on Billy Graham discusses, in combination, this evolution in Graham's theology and practice. You are invited to take a fresh look at the teaching and practice of this man who has touched millions of lives through the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Book America s Preacher and His Message

Download or read book America s Preacher and His Message written by Timo Pokki and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1999 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the popular literature concerned with Billy Graham as an evangelical icon is vast, there have been few serious academic considerations of his religious views. In America's Preacher and His Message, Timo Pokki provides the most extensive systematic analysis to date on Graham's theology, paying particular attention to views surrounding conversion and sanctification. The study not only provides a detailed analysis of Graham's thoughts on these topics, but also investigates the impact of Calvinism and Arminianism on revivalism and evangelicalism in general.

Book Laughter in the Amen Corner

Download or read book Laughter in the Amen Corner written by Kathleen Minnix and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Porter Jones (1847–1906)—“or just plain Sam Jones,” as he preferred to be called—was the foremost southern evangelist of the nineteenth century. With his high-spirited, often coarse, humor and his hyperbolic style, he excited audiences around the country and became a key influence on Billy Sunday, “Gypsy” Smith, and scores of lesser known evangelists. A leading political activist, he played an important role in the selling of a new industrialized South and was thus a clerical counterpart to his friend Henry Grady. In Laughter in the Amen Corner, the first scholarly biography of Jones, Kathleen Minnix reveals a figure of fascinating contradictions. Jones was an alcoholic who became a pivotal supporter of the prohibition movement. He advocated women's rights when most men preferred to keep women on pedestals, yet he followed the South in its drift towards malignant racism. He praised Catholics in an age that feared the “Romish heresy,” and he embraced Jews as fellow children of God when many saw them as Christ-killers. Even so, he was shrill in his insistence that Americans worship a Protestant God, and like many nativists, he called for the deportation of the “trash” who had landed at Ellis Island. Progressive in some respects and reactionary in others, he was, in the words of one contemporary, “a sanctified circus in full swing.” Deftly written and exhaustively researched, Laughter in the Amen Corner offers the first in-depth assessment of Sam Jones's impact on revivalism, the progressive movement, and the history of the South.
