This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 William E. Colby Award "The book I had been waiting for. I can't recommend it highly enough." —Bill Gates The era of autonomous weapons has arrived. Today around the globe, at least thirty nations have weapons that can search for and destroy enemy targets all on their own. Paul Scharre, a leading expert in next-generation warfare, describes these and other high tech weapons systems—from Israel’s Harpy drone to the American submarine-hunting robot ship Sea Hunter—and examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use. “A smart primer to what’s to come in warfare” (Bruce Schneier), Army of None engages military history, global policy, and cutting-edge science to explore the implications of giving weapons the freedom to make life and death decisions. A former soldier himself, Scharre argues that we must embrace technology where it can make war more precise and humane, but when the choice is life or death, there is no replacement for the human heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. These requirements were met by (a) reviewing relevant theory and research on tacit knowledge, leadership, and knowledge acquisition; (b) reporting results of analyses performed on free text responses provided by Army officers to tacit- knowledge scenarios; and (c) discussing the implications of this research for ongoing efforts to identify and assess the processes associated with tacit-knowledge acquisition. Over the course of the multi-year project evidence was discovered that tacit knowledge from the stories and advice leaders shared about their experiences could be used to developed tools for measuring the possession of tacit knowledge and evidence was obtained that tacit knowledge relates to effective leadership. Relationships were found between rank and tacit-knowledge scores on the company and battalion inventories, providing support for the relationship between experience and tacit knowledge.

  • Author : J Furman Daniel
  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press
  • Release : 2016-09-15
  • ISBN : 1682470644
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book 21st Century Patton written by J Furman Daniel and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While General George S. Patton Jr. remains an iconic figure seventy years after his death, few fully appreciate him as a strategic thinker. Indeed, his flamboyant personality often obscures the fact that he was a lifelong student of the military arts, a true strategic visionary, and a unique figure in American military history. This short volume introduces readers to a more complete and nuanced Patton. By tracing his intellectual development and connecting his views on strategic thought and history to the issues of the present day, this book offers a bold, fresh view on the famous general. Linking Patton’s success as a warfighter to his efforts as a thinker, this book hopes to kindle debate on managing human capital within the military. Most surely the book will demonstrate that—like Patton— the seeds of military success can be planted throughout a lifetime of formal and self-directed study of the military arts.

Book Issues and Insights from the Army Technology Seminar Game

Download or read book Issues and Insights from the Army Technology Seminar Game written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chief of Staff of the Army initiated the Army After Next (AAN) Project in February 1996 under the leadership of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). The AAN goals were to link Army XXI to a long-term vision of the Army extending well into the 21st century and to ensure that this vision informed evolving Army research and development requirements. In support of the AAN Project, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research, Development, and Acquisition (SARDA) since renamed the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology (ASA(ALT)) sponsored the Army Technology Seminar Game (ATSG), held at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania from July 27 to July 31, 1998. Ensuring close correspondence between research and force requirements is a critical challenge for the U.S. Army in an era of rapid technological progress. To meet this challenge, the ATSG brought together civilian technologists and military operators. RAND Arroyo Center was asked to observe the ATSG, identify major issues emerging from the game, and provide an assessment. This report documents outcomes of this research. A follow-on technology game was conducted in July of 1999. This game was identified as the Technology and Materiel Game-TMG. It incorporated many of the recommendations summarized in the report.

Book Issues and Insights from the Army Technology Seminar Game

Download or read book Issues and Insights from the Army Technology Seminar Game written by Richard E. Darilek and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army's Spring 1998 Technology Seminar Game was designed to advance the Army After Next (AAN) process by bringing together military operators and civilian scientists and technologists to examine future force development issues. It used 15 mini-scenarios extracted from previous AAN games. For each scenario, an overall mission and required force capabilities required to achieve that mission were identified beforehand. A set of System Cards, used in the game as a means of achieving the required capabilities, was also preselected. The cards included information about the specifications of a particular system and the technologies that could be used to build those systems. System Cards were thus the fundamental component of the game, linking systems and technologies to the required force capabilities. The players' involvement included examining the preselected cards, revising and/or adding new cards, and then cross-evaluating them with the intention of identifying the most important critical technologies of the future. The authors believe that while these scenarios can reveal many useful issues and insights with regard to technology's role in achieving future AAN force objectives, they do not extract the most value from such exercises. The linkages between force capabilities, systems, and technologies need to be sorted out more clearly, and the game organizers need to decide what kinds of discussions will produce the required information.

Book Illusions of Victory

Download or read book Illusions of Victory written by Carter Malkasian and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the immediate aftermath of the 2007 "Surge" of American troops in Iraq, the defeat of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) in Anbar Province was widely hailed as one of America's signature victories. US Marines and soldiers fought for years there, in grinding battles such as Fallujah and Ramadi that define the experience of Iraq. Eventually, the fractious tribal sheiks in that province, with the help of American troops, united in an "Awakening" that dealt AQI a stunning defeat. The Awakening's success argued that the United States could intervene in a war-torn country and, with the right strategy, bring stability and peace. It seemed to exemplify snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. A decade later, the situation in Anbar Province is dramatically different. In 2014, much of Anbar fell to the AQI's successor organization, the Islamic State, which swept through the region with shocking ease. In Illusions of Victory, Carter Malkasian looks at the wreckage to explain why the Awakening's initial promise proved misleading and why victory was unsustainable. Malkasian begins by tracing the origins of the Awakening, then turns his attention to what happened in its wake. After the United States left, Iraq's Shi'a government sidelined Sunni leaders throughout the country. AQI, brought back to life as the Islamic State, expanded in northern and western Iraq and quickly found a receptive audience among marginalized Sunnis. In short order, the progress that had resulted from the Awakening fell apart. Malkasian draws many lessons from Anbar. Chief among them, the most stunning of victories may not last. The fact that the leading model of success fell apart severely damages the idea that the United States can send the military to a country for a few years and create lasting peace. Even the most successful example was bound to deeper social, sectarian, and religious forces insensitive to temporary boots on the ground. From today's perspective, rather than decisive success, Anbar exemplifies how intervention itself is a costly, long-term project. The most brilliant victory could not escape this wisdom.

Book Life in the U S Armed Forces

Download or read book Life in the U S Armed Forces written by Anni Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-12-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anni Baker has created a fascinating exploration of life in the armed forces, as it has been experienced by millions of men, women, and children over the past six decades. Her book examines the factors that shape military service and military culture, from grueling training exercises to sexual relations with local women, from overseas duty to the peculiar life of the military brat. The book begins with an examination of the enlistment process, follows the military lifecycle through career decisions, promotions, raising families, and retirement, explores the impact of war on military society, and ends with a discussion of the place of the armed forces in the United States. A wide variety of sources were used in this study, including contemporary scholarship, government and military records, public media, and, most important, interviews and written materials from military personnel, retirees, family members, and civilian employees. Using a lively and readable style, Baker blends clear explanations of elements of military life, information on the development of military society, and the voices of those who serve into an insightful account of this fascinating subculture. It is the author's view that not only is study of the U.S. military a valuable undertaking in itself, but in addition it will enrich our perspective on civilian life and culture in the United States. The military is a distinct society based on a set of common values that are sometimes, though not always, at odds with those of civilian society. The extent to which active duty personnel, family members and civilians internalize these values dictates their comfort with military life and their choice of a military career. Through a discussion of life in the military, Baker examines how the values, traditions and norms of the armed forces are articulated and shared, how they influence the individual and the institution, and what their role is in American society as a whole.
