Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Archaeological Survey of the United Kingdom, 1896 "What is aimed at is an accurate description - illustrated by plans, measurements, drawings or photographs, and by copies of inscriptions - of such remains as most deserve notice, with the history of them so far as it may be traceable, and a record of the traditions that are retained regarding them." Minute by Lord Canning, Governor-General of India, in Council, 22nd January, 1862. Cunningham, Archaeological Survey of India vol. I., p. III (Simla, 1871, 8vo). "Je m'appliquerai a faire dresser un inventaire complet, un catalogue descriptif et raisonne des monumens de tous les genres et de toutes les epoques qui ont existe ou existent encore sur le sol de la France." Guizot (1831), Rapports et pieces, p. 23. "There is at the present time a most pressing want for an archaeological survey of Great Britain, including within the scope of its operations the plotting down upon the Ordnance Map of every trace of man and his handiwork left by successive generations upon the face of the country." J. Romilly Allen (1889), Journal Brit Archaeol. Assoc., xlv., p. 299. "It is, no doubt, in a great measure owing to an ignorance of the extensive and rich archaeological fields which are scattered over the surface of these islands, that so little interest in the protection of these records of early civilization has been manifested by the Legislature, and by the public generally." Earl of Carnarvon (1881), P.S.A., 2nd S., viii., p. 515. "L'archeologue, en effet, cherche non-seulement a connaitre et a decrire les uvres des siecles passes; il doit encore perpeuer le souvenir de ces monuments que l'age atteint avec plus ou moins de rapidite et qui disparaitront tot ou tard; il faut done que l'archeologue, en meme temps qu'il les decrit, represente les sujets qu'il veut faire connaitre." Trutat, La Photographie appliquee a l'Archeologie, p. (Paris, 1879, 12mo). "A grave mound, a lonely circle of stones, a stone implement, a metal ornament excavated from the covered chamber of death, afford a livelier image of antiquity than Saxo or Snorre, the Eddas, or the Germany of Tacitus." Guide to Northern Archaeology, p. 25 (London, 1848, 8vo). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Paradigms of Indian Architecture

Download or read book Paradigms of Indian Architecture written by G. H. R. Tillotson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores conceptions of Indian architecture and how the historical buildings of the subcontinent have been conceived and described. Investigating the design philosophies of architects and styles of analysis by architectural historians, the book explores how systems of design and ideas about aesthetics have governed both the construction of buildings in India and their subsequent interpretation. How did the political directives of the British colonial period shape the manner in which pioneer archaeologists wrote the histories of India's buildings? How might such accounts conflict with indigenous ones, or with historical aesthetics? How might paintings of buildings by British and Indian artists suggest different ways of understanding their subjects? In what ways must we revise our conceptions of space and time to understand the narrative art which adorns India's most ancient monuments? These are among the questions addressed by the contributors to the volume.

Book Histories of Australian Rock Art Research

Download or read book Histories of Australian Rock Art Research written by Jo McDonald and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia has one of the largest inventories of rock art in the world with pictographs and petroglyphs found almost anywhere that has suitable rock surfaces – in rock shelters and caves, on boulders and rock platforms. First Nations people have been marking these places with figurative imagery, abstract designs, stencils and prints for tens of thousands of years, often engaging with earlier rock markings. The art reflects and expresses changing experiences within landscapes over time, spirituality, history, law and lore, as well as relationships between individuals and groups of people, plants, animals, land and Ancestral Beings that are said to have created the world, including some rock art. Since the late 1700s, people arriving in Australia have been fascinated with the rock art they encountered, with detailed studies commencing in the late 1800s. Through the 1900s an impressive body of research on Australian rock art was undertaken, with dedicated academic study using archaeological methods employed since the late 1940s. Since then, Australian rock art has been researched from various perspectives, including that of Traditional Owners, custodians and other community members. Through the 1900s, there was also growing interest in Australian rock art from researchers across the globe, leading many to visit or migrate to Australia to undertake rock art research. In this volume, the varied histories of Australian rock art research from different parts of the country are explored not only in terms of key researchers, developments and changes over time, but also the crucial role of First Nations people themselves in investigations of this key component of their living heritage.

Book My Life and Career as a Biblical Scholar

Download or read book My Life and Career as a Biblical Scholar written by John Van Seters and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite growing up in a poor family during the 1930s and '40s, Van Seters eventually excelled at the University of Toronto and earned a PhD at Yale University in ancient Near Eastern and Hebrew studies. Before Van Seters became a teacher, he and his wife spent three-quarters of a year in Palestine, becoming familiar with the whole region. Later in his career Van Seters assisted in archaeological expeditions in Jordan and Egypt. Visits to the Near East across his career broadened his understanding and appreciation of the biblical texts he studied professionally. Van Seters spent most of his working life teaching in universities--first at the University of Toronto, and then for over twenty years at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This book not only chronicles what Van Seters has accomplished as a biblical scholar but also tells how he has become such a scholar. He hopes that experiences recorded here may guide young scholars to develop fruitful careers in biblical studies.

Book Gods Graves and Scholars

Download or read book Gods Graves and Scholars written by C.W. Ceram and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1986-07-12 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C.W. Ceram visualized archeology as a wonderful combination of high adventure, romance, history and scholarship, and this book, a chronicle of man's search for his past, reads like a dramatic narrative. We travel with Heinrich Schliemann as, defying the ridicule of the learned world, he actually unearths the remains of the ancient city of Troy. We share the excitement of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter as they first glimpse the riches of Tutankhamen's tomb, of George Smith when he found the ancient clay tablets that contained the records of the Biblical Flood. We rediscover the ruined splendors of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the wonders of the ancient wold; of Chichen Itza, the abandoned pyramids of the Maya: and the legendary Labyrinth of tile Minotaur in Crete. Here is much of the history of civilization and the stories of the men who rediscovered it. Illustrated with drawings, maps, and photographs
