Book The Oxford Handbook of Arabic Linguistics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Arabic Linguistics written by Jonathan Owens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until about 60 years ago, linguistic research on the Arabic language in the West was restricted to inquiries on Classical Arabic and the Classical tradition, and spoken Arabic dialects, with historical studies embedded within the broader field of Semitic languages. This situation is changing quickly, not only through the continuation of older research traditions, but also with the integration of new research fields and perspectives. With this expansion comes the danger of specialists in Arabic losing an overview of the field, and of leaving non-specialists without basic resources for evaluating domains of research which they may be interested in for comparative purposes. The Oxford Handbook of Arabic Linguistics will confront this problem by combining state-of-the-art overviews with essays on issues of perspective, controversy, and point of view. In twenty-four chapters, leading experts from around the world will lay out their own stances on controversial issues. The book not only evaluates ways in which questions and theories established in general linguistics and its sub-fields elucidate Arabic, but also challenges approaches which might result in accommodating Arabic to "non-Arabic" interpretations, and brings out the Arabic specificity of individual problems. The Handbook, in one compact volume, gives critical expression to a language which covers large populations and geographical areas, has a long written tradition, and has been the locus of major intellectual fervor and debate.

This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Arabic-English Vocabulary of the Colloquial Arabic of Egypt: Containing the Vernacular Idioms and Expressions, Slang Phrases, Etc., Etc., Used by Native Egyptians But it was not until 1891 that he began to collect his materials. His plan at first was to compile a simple book of some two hundred pages, but as the work progressed he found that it was gradually growing larger until at last its size as originally contemplated was greatly increased. Finding this to be the case, the compiler decided to give the book a wider scope, and for this purpose he introduced a large number of administrative, financial, engineering, mechanical and military words which he met with in his perusal of a mass of official publications. The idioms and the slang phrases were obtained not only by reading almost all the literature of which colloquial Arabic can boast, but by listening and carefully noting casual words and trivial phrases as they were used in common conversation. Book A Handbook and Reader of Ottoman Arabic

Download or read book A Handbook and Reader of Ottoman Arabic written by Esther-Miriam Wagner and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written forms of Arabic composed during the era of the Ottoman Empire present an immensely fruitful linguistic topic. Extant texts display a proximity to the vernacular that cannot be encountered in any other surviving historical Arabic material, and thus provide unprecedented access to Arabic language history. This rich material remains very little explored. Traditionally, scholarship on Arabic has focussed overwhelmingly on the literature of the various Golden Ages between the 8th and 13th centuries, whereas texts from the 15th century onwards have often been viewed as corrupted and not worthy of study. The lack of interest in Ottoman Arabic culture and literacy left these sources almost completely neglected in university courses. This volume is the first linguistic work to focus exclusively on varieties of Christian, Jewish and Muslim Arabic in the Ottoman Empire of the 15th to the 20th centuries, and present Ottoman Arabic material in a didactic and easily accessible way. Split into a Handbook and a Reader section, the book provides a historical introduction to Ottoman literacy, translation studies, vernacularisation processes, language policy and linguistic pluralism. The second part contains excerpts from more than forty sources, edited and translated by a diverse network of scholars. The material presented includes a large number of yet unedited texts, such as Christian Arabic letters from the Prize Paper collections, mercantile correspondence and notebooks found in the Library of Gotha, and Garshuni texts from archives of Syriac patriarchs.
