Book excerpt: In this new edition of their groundbreaking Kodály Today, Mícheál Houlahan and Philip Tacka offer an expertly-researched, thorough, and -- most importantly -- practical approach to transforming curriculum goals into tangible, achievable musical objectives and effective lesson plans. Their model -- grounded in the latest research in music perception and cognition -- outlines the concrete practices behind constructing effective teaching portfolios, selecting engaging music repertoire for the classroom, and teaching musicianship skills successfully to elementary students of all degrees of proficiency. Addressing the most important questions in creating and teaching Kodály-based programs, Houlahan and Tacka write through a practical lens, presenting a clear picture of how the teaching and learning processes go hand-in-hand. Their innovative approach was designed through a close, six-year collaboration between music instructors and researchers, and offers teachers an easily-followed, step-by-step roadmap for developing students' musical understanding and metacognition skills. A comprehensive resource in the realm of elementary music education, this book is a valuable reference for all in-service music educators, music supervisors, and students and instructors in music education.

Book The Application of Nel Noddings Care Theory in a Seventh Grade General Music Class

Download or read book The Application of Nel Noddings Care Theory in a Seventh Grade General Music Class written by Lauren McDowell and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The structure of the American educational system makes it a priority to nurture students' intellectual growth, yet there is little accountability for monitoring the holistic growth of students. Along with overseeing students' cognitive development, Nel Noddings charges her teachers with nurturing students' moral and ethical development through her advocacy of care theory. Care theory seeks to create responsive classroom environments in which members of the classroom relate to one another in positive and constructive contexts. The purpose of this research was to examine the application of care theory in one 7th grade general music class in a northern New Jersey school. The study was framed as an action research with the researcher acting as the teacher of the music class. Data were collected through document analysis, observation, and interviews over the course of one 30-day music cycle. The results of this study indicate that music became a means of connection between members of the classroom, a means to examine ethical issues in society, and a means to empower students within the classroom. Care theory was naturally synthesized into the curriculum of the music classroom and it worked to significantly foster teacher-student connections and student-student connections"--P. v.
