Download or read book World Bank Lending and Financial Sector Development written by Robert J. Cull and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Using a new database of World Bank loans to support financial sector development, the authors investigate whether countries that received such loans experienced more rapid growth on standard indicators of financial development than countries that did not. They account for self-selection with treatment effects regressions, and also use propensity score matching techniques. The authors' results indicate that borrowing countries had significantly more rapid growth in M2/GDP than non-borrowers, and swifter reductions in interest rate spreads and cash holdings (as a share of M2). Borrowers also had higher private credit growth rates than non-borrowers in treatment effects regressions, but not in standard panel regressions with fixed country effects. On the whole, however, the results indicate significant advantages for borrowers over non-borrowers in terms of financial development."--Cover verso.

Download or read book The Lending Policy Of The World Bank In The 1970s written by Bettina S. Hurni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pilot study - the first to analyze the World Bank’s lending policy in the Second United Nations Development Decade - concentrates on the Bank’s shift in emphasis from traditional infrastructure projects to “new style” projects, especially in the area of rural development, and on the resulting changes in lending criteria in the 1970s. Basing her conclusions on two years of independent research and access to confidential materials, Dr. Hurni evaluates the World Bank’s work; gives a good overall view of current development problems - including implementation of the “growth with equity” strategy - and their possible solutions; shows the effects of the new development goals in borrower and creditor countries, as well as on the institutional decision-making process; and offers recommendations for improvement of the Bank’s evaluation methodology and operational structures. She presents a clear picture of the positive and negative aspects of the World Bank as a multilateral investment model and shows its bridge-building function in the great North-South controversy.

Download or read book When Reality Contradicts Rhetoric written by Jean-Germain Gros and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2005 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors provide a compelling and balanced critique of the world's largest multilateral development lending agency in the context of globalization and the increasing domestication of market-based economic reforms. Adopting a tripartite historical, theoretical and empirical approach the study shows how the Bank is still moored in neo- liberal market ideology and western hegemony, lacks transparency and democracy in its workings, and boasts ?pro-poor? policies that are little more than empty rhetoric. They conclude that the Bank must be radically transformed to meet to improve its record on lending to poor countries, as well as to deal with the sharpened problem of poverty ushered in by globalization.
