This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Appeal to the Citizens of New-York, in Behalf of the Christian Sabbath We urge too, and we think irresistibly, the introduc tion of a precept, requiring the observance of this day, into the moral law. The distinction between the cere monial and moral law, consists in this: the ceremoni al law directed the peculiar policy and worship of the Jewish nation - it prescribed the rites and ceremonies un der the Mosaic dispensation exclusively - such as the offering of sacrifices, the worship of the temple, the cele bration of the passover, the feast of Pentecost, and the feasts of Purim and Dedication. The moral law is that de claration of the will of God, which directs and binds all men, in every age and place, to their whole duty to him. It is comprised in what are usually called the Ten Com mandments. The ceremonial law was temporary, and is repealed; the moral is permanent, and unrepealable. The former Was superseded and abolished, at the introduction of the Christian dispensation; the latter endures for ever. The moral law is the code which our Lord affirms he came not to destroy, but to fulfil, and of which he so solemnly declares, Heaven and earth shall pass away, but not one jet or one tittle of the law shall fail. And yet, in this grand moral code, you find the precept, remember the sabbath day TO keep IT holy. There is no solemnity, obligation, or permanency, here imparted to the first, the second, the third precept, or either of the ten, which does not belong equally to the fourth. You may as well deny the perpetual obligation of the whole, as that which insists on the observance of the Sabbath day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts on the Sabbath Er it a prominent article in the religion of their fore fathers. This practice has been unbroken in the nation from the time of the giving of the law upon Mount Sinai till the present day. There have been, indeed, many instances of Sabbath-breaking among them, and at present there is reason to believe that the motives which govern them in its observance are sadly defi cient. But the practice itself is tenaciously adhered to, as required'by the unrepealed law of the God of Israel. And, if our views are correct, they have the right of' the case, and the majority of Christians have corrupted the law. This, therefore, is a formidable obstacle to their embracing Christianity. To become first-day Christians (and such compose a vast majority of professors) they must relinquish or change one of the precepts of the Decalogue, and dissent from a custom held sacred by their ancestors, and deep ly venerated by themselves and that, too, with out seeing any divine warrant produced for such a departure. This unauthorized practice of keeping the first instead of the seventh day of the week, can not fail to prove a powerful objection in their View to embracing the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is true that they are tenacious also of other practices enjoined in the Old T estament, which Christians justly regard as obsolete. But as to these, we can show authority for their abrogation. We can appeal to the New Testa ment records, and show that the Mosaic ritual, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, which constituted the enmity or separation between Jews and Gentiles, was abolished by the death of Christ - 4that he took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross. But the same course cannot be success fully pursued With respect to the seventh-day Sabbath. The Decalogue in which this is found was not included in the abrogated ritual. It is altogether a distinct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Considerations on the Foundation, Ends and Duties of the Christian Sabbath, and the Late Measures for Enforcing Its Observance There are worry, we apprehend. Who think it necessary to hold the mind in a peculiar, fixed, and somewhat constrained posture, who tool as if mung! To put an unusual tension on their thoughts and emotions ghout that day, thus interpreting what they sup pose to be written in scripture, that they 'should not think their own thoughts' on the Sabbath. We cannot agree with them. Se vere studies, it is found, require relaxation immediately to follow them. We would have a state of devotion unusually fixed and in. Tense during a portion of the day, but for another portion, we can see nothing to object to easy and cheerful conversation, to the kind and enlivening intercourse of relatives and friends, happy and Mild to God, that he has opened to them amidst the pressing cares of life, a season of rest, devotion, and social intercourse. W'ell, we have 110 Saviour to trust in but Jesus Christ, who was ac cording to the flesh. A J ew-no other apostles and prophets but Jewish - no other than Jewish Scrip tures, and indeed, Jesus said himself, that salvation is of the Jews. John iv, 22. And what did the writers of the New Testament mean by the words Sabbath and the Sabbath day? What did Mat thew mean in the sixth year of the Christian church? He certainly did not mean thg first day of the week, but he meant the day before the first day of the week. See Matt. Xxviii, 1. He meant what all oth er Jewish writers ever meant: viz: the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. But neither Matthew nor any of the apostles ever told us a word about the Sabbath being changed from the seventh to the first day of the week.
