Book An Anthology of Jugoslav Poetry

Download or read book An Anthology of Jugoslav Poetry written by B. Stevenson Stanoyevich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology of Jugoslav Poetry: Serbian Lyrics Give me the making of a nation's songs, and let who will make their laws, was the maxim of a Scottish patriot. We would prefer to modify this rule, and say, Give us the poems which the people make for themselves, and then we shall obtain a clear insight into the national character and learn What customs and laws they are likely to accept or reject. F olk-songs are the intimate expressions of the ideas of the people. What the comic drama is to the cultured, and the music hall to the ill-educated portions of urban popula tion, the popular song has been, and in some coun tries still is, to the rural peasantry, a true expo nent of their sentiments, though too frequently in accurate in statements of facts. Critics, as is well known, have censured Lord Macaulay for his indis criminate adoption of the vulgar and often malig nant rhapsodies sung in the streets of London. But the Russian bylina, collected by Danilov, Rybnikov, Sreznevsky and others, may be taken as furnishing unimpeachable evidence of the state of Russia during the invasions of the Mongols and Turks. The Jacobite poems give us the real feel ings of the people of Scotland for nearly an entire century. The popular and rustic strains which are handed down from the reign of Henry III have rehabilitated the memory of Simon de Montfort. Download or read book Balkan Departures written by Wendy Bracewell and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writings about travel, the Balkans appear most often as a place travelled to. Western accounts of the Balkans revel in the different and the exotic, the violent and the primitive − traits that serve (according to many commentators) as a foil to self-congratulatory definitions of the West as modern, progressive and rational. However, the Balkans have also long been travelled from. The region’s writers have given accounts of their travels in the West and elsewhere, saying something in the process about themselves and their place in the world. The analyses presented here, ranging from those of 16th-century Greek humanists to 19th-century Romanian reformers to 20th-century writers, socialists and ‘men-of-the-world’, suggest that travellers from the region have also created their own identities through their encounters with Europe. Consequently, this book challenges assumptions of Western discursive hegemony, while at the same time exploring Balkan ‘Occidentalisms’.

Book Making a Nation Breaking a Nation

Download or read book Making a Nation Breaking a Nation written by Andrew Wachtel and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the cultural processes by which the idea of a Yugoslav nation was developed and on the reasons that this idea ultimately failed to bind the South Slavs into a viable nation and state. The author argues that the collapse of multinational Yugoslavia and the establishment of separate uninational states did not result from the breakdown of the political or economic fabric of the Yugoslav state; rather, that breakdown itself sprang from the destruction of the concept of a Yugoslav nation. Had such a concept been retained, a collapse of political authority would have been followed by the eventual reconstitution of a Yugoslav state, as happened after World War II, rather than the creation of separate nation-states. Because the author emphasizes nation building rather than state building, the causes and evidence he cites for Yugoslavia’s collapse differ markedly from those that have previously been put forward. He concentrates on culture and cultural politics in the South Slavic lands from the mid-nineteenth century to the present in order to delineate those ideological mechanisms that helped lay the foundation for the formation of a Yugoslav nation in the first place, sustained the nation during its approximately seventy-year existence, and led to its dissolution. The book describes the evolution of the idea of Yugoslav national unity in four major areas: linguistic policies geared to creating a shared national language, the promulgation of a Yugoslav literary and artistic canon, an educational policy that emphasized the teaching of literature and history in schools, and the production of new literary and artistic works incorporating a Yugoslav view. In the book’s conclusion, the author discusses the relevance of the Yugoslav case for other parts of the world, considering whether the triumph of particularist nationalism is inevitable in multinational states.
