Book Butterflies of Southeastern Arizona

Download or read book Butterflies of Southeastern Arizona written by Richard Allen Bailowitz and published by Sonoran Arthropod Studies Incorporated. This book was released on 1991 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the southeast 1/6 of Arizona, this book illustrates and comments on nearly 300 species either found here or are suspected, possible, or claimed to occur here. Including two counties and portions of four others, this book focuses on a unique geographic area known for both its butterflies and birds. As noted by the authors, this black-and-white book is meant to be used in tandem with other color field guides. All of the southeastern butterflies are illustrated with multiple (usually two) b&w photos. The two photos are typically dorsal and ventral and often of male and female. Four color plates showing dorsal views of 90 species are included in the appendices. The text for each butterfly varies from one paragraph for vagrants to half a page for the expected species. Four categories are typically offered for each butterfly, which are: General, larval foodplant, flight period, and distribution.

Book The Neotropical Polymorphic Earless Praying Mantises

Download or read book The Neotropical Polymorphic Earless Praying Mantises written by Julio Rivera and published by Entomological Society of America. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent phylogenetic studies on evolutionary relationships within the Acanthopoidea, known as “polymorphic earless praying mantises,” revealed numerous issues with the taxonomic status and morphological boundaries of many genera and species within this superfamily. The authors of this monograph present a thorough morphological assessment based on museum specimens and reexamination of type material, aimed toward redefining the morphological delineation of all Acanthopoidea genera, verifying the generic identity of all nominal species within the superfamily, and establishing taxonomic and nomenclatural foundations for future revisionary studies of acanthopoid genera. Their work resulted in numerous modifications in the taxonomy of this lineage, including the description of a new genus.

  • Author : John C. Abbott
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2015-03-15
  • ISBN : 0292714483

Download or read book Dragonflies of Texas written by John C. Abbott and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dragonflies and damselflies (together known as Odonata) are among the most remarkably distinctive insects in their appearance and biology, and they have become some of the most popular creatures sought by avocational naturalists. Texas hosts 160 species of dragonflies, nearly half of the 327 species known in North America, making the state a particularly good place to observe dragonflies in their natural habitats. Dragonflies of Texas is the definitive field guide to these insects. It covers all 160 species with in situ photographs and detailed anatomical images as needed. Each species is given a two-page spread that includes photographs of both sexes and known variations when possible, key features, a distribution map, identification, discussion of similar species, status in Texas, habitat, seasonality, and general comments. Many of the groups also have comparative plates that show anatomically distinctive characteristics. In addition to the species accounts, John Abbott discusses dragonfly anatomy, life history, conservation, names, and photography. He also provides information on species that may eventually be discovered in Texas, state and global conservation rankings, seasonality of all species in chronological order, and additional resources and publications on the identification of dragonflies.
