Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wildlife of Nebraska: A Natural History, Paul A. Johnsgard surveys the variety and biology of more than six hundred Nebraska species. Narrative accounts describe the ecology and biology of the state's birds, its mammals, and its reptiles and amphibians, summarizing the abundance, distributions, and habitats of this wildlife. To provide an introduction to the state's major ecosystems, climate, and topography, Johnsgard examines major public-access natural areas, including national monuments, wildlife refuges and grasslands, state parks and wildlife management areas, and nature preserves. Including more than thirty-five line drawings by the author along with physiographic, ecological, and historical maps, Wildlife of Nebraska is an essential guide to the wildlife of the Cornhusker State.

Book excerpt: This annotated list of the birds of Nebraska grew gradually out of research associated with my writing of the Birds of the Great Plains: Breeding Species and Their Distribution (Johnsgard, 1979a). It expands and updates an earlier version that was published in 2013 by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries DigitalCommons' Zea Books (Johnsgard, 2013a). It has been updated and modified in its current revision to conform with the most recent (2017) major revision of the American Ornithologists' Society's Checklist of North American Birds (Chesser et al., 2017). It has also been modified in its current revision to conform very closely to the most recent "Official List of the Birds of Nebraska" by the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union (Gubanyi, 1997, and later supplements in the Nebraska Bird Review, to 84:138-150). The NOU's official state list of birds (461 species as of 2017) is based on actual specimen evidence or some other convincing basis of each species' proven occurrence in the state. That list includes 337 "regular" species, 29 "casual" species, 90 "accidental" species, and 5 extinct or extirpated species. In this edition I have classified 368 of the 461 species of Nebraska birds as ranging in relative frequency of occurrence as "abundant" to "rare." There are also 61 species considered to be of "accidental" occurrence, having been reliably reported in Nebraska no more than five times, 20 that are considered "extremely rare" or "very rare," if reported from six to 25 times. There are also three extinct, four extirpated, and five unsuccessfully introduced species. Thirteen hypothetical species of dubious origin or identification are mentioned parenthetically. The text includes more than 123,000 words, nearly 200 literature references, and 19 pages of drawings and maps.

Book Implementing the North American Bat Monitoring Program in Nebraska

Download or read book Implementing the North American Bat Monitoring Program in Nebraska written by Baxter H. Seguin and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade bat species in North America have been under immense stress due to anthropogenic activities throughout the continent along with severe declines from foreign invaders. Though many specific anthropogenic related activities such as deforestation, land-use alteration, and hibernacula disturbance/modification were the primary culprits of negative impacts on bat species in the past, they pale in comparison to the threats bats face today. White nose syndrome a disease caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans and wind energy development have caused declines and disruptions to the bat populations of North America at an unprecedented rate. Due to the significant contribution to insect population control that bats exhibit throughout the continent they are considered to be a major benefit to both ecosystems and agricultural industries. Though they are known to provide significant services to ecosystems large information gaps exist in what physical properties influence their presence on the landscape. Especially in states like Nebraska where the large extent of agricultural and grassland ecosystems has made their study difficult in the past. In order to address these information gaps we implemented the North American Bat Monitoring Program throughout Nebraska in order to answer baseline questions about bat habitat use and ensure that monitoring efforts continued into the future and benefit bat research throughout the continent.

He aims at, "placing on record certain information on the geographic distribution of several species—information that is thought pertinent to current studies of some of my associates." Most of this information is provided by specimens collected by him and other representatives of the University Of Kansas Museum Of Natural History, although specimens from other collections provide some of the records therein reported. The Knox Jones gopher found in parts of Texas and New Mexico is named after him.

Book Distributional and Reproductive Records of Bats from South central Nebraska

Download or read book Distributional and Reproductive Records of Bats from South central Nebraska written by J. Owen Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bats are facing unprecedented population declines across North America. Onset and continued westward movement of white-nose syndrome (WNS) has caused large-scale mortality in cave-dwelling, hibernating eastern species of bats, whereas numerous migratory bat species are affected by wind-energy facilities across the continent. To date, limited natural history data are available for bats from south-central Nebraska, an area of the state not yet impacted by WNS or wind-energy facilities. Herein, we report on geographic and reproductive records of bats from the region to better understand them and to serve as a baseline on species occurrences and their natural history. We documented 22 county records of seven species from 12 total counties, including expansion of distributional limits for the Northern Long-eared Myotis (Myotis septentrionalis), Evening Bat (Nycticeius humeralis), and American Perimyotis (Perimyotis subflavus) in the state. Fifteen reproductive records were documented from four species in nine counties, including the earliest volant young for Eastern Red Bats (Lasiurus borealis) and latest date of pregnancy for Evening Bats in Nebraska. Understanding the natural history and distribution of bats in the region will help to make informed management decisions in the future.
