Book An Anguished Crack in Being

Download or read book An Anguished Crack in Being written by Charles Schlee and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an answer to the question with which Sartre concludes being and nothingness: how are we to understand a freedom that wants to be a freedom? One of Sartre’s most fundamental concepts is what he has called the “circuit of selfness,” our attempt to fill ourselves with being. This is how we typically live our lives. Yet a focus on filling ourselves with being is psychologically unhealthy, for it leads to bad faith and conflict. In this book, Dr. Schlee presents an alternative, psychologically healthier approach based not on filling ourselves with being but on embracing the freedom we truly are.

Book The Cracking Tower

Download or read book The Cracking Tower written by Jim DeKorne and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: End-of-the-world paranoia has been with us since time immemorial. Now, with the end of the legendary Mayan “long count” calendar looming on December 21, 2012 and recent threats of a worldwide economic collapse triggering widespread apprehension and a search for answers, The Cracking Tower offers an arsenal of strategies to turn these fears into an opportunity for spiritual and personal growth. Beginning with a lively memoir of the author’s experiences in the ’60s, the book goes on to explore apocalyptic thinking through perennial philosophy, shamanism, gnostic mysticism, the body as a vessel of consciousness (and death as “an extended out-of-body experience”), and psychedelics. Shaping the discussion is the fascinating metaphor of the cracking tower, an apparatus for distilling gasoline, as a vehicle for distilling our awareness. Rather than speculating on what might occur in 2012, DeKorne proposes vigilance of a more introspective sort. “The important thing,” he says, “is to ignore the finger and strive to comprehend the moon,” to see what our apocalyptic tendencies reveal about ourselves.

This book was released on 2015-02 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There exist the forces of good and evil, which are both actively interfering in the affairs of men and operate by dynamics not explicitly understood by mortals. It appears that man’s actions and inactions are engineered by unseen forces that manipulate him to accomplish a specific purpose. It also appears that in the fulfillment of prophecy, Satan is an unpaid worker in the kingdom of God. This treatise, Cracking the Ancient Codes, captures vividly the intrigues behind the Bible stories from the spiritual dimension. It narrates the story of the Seed and the Serpent, manifesting in different forms as they engaged in unabated contention throughout the ages. The intentions of Satan are clear: to frustrate the manifestation of the Seed, by either defiling or destroying the Seed’s ancestors. In this plot, Israel and Jerusalem are the sacred sites; the Jews and later the church are the principal actors. Without ambiguity, the Light shines with an outstanding luminance and Darkness cannot decipher the mystery behind it. Mortals have to make the constant choice between life and death. Events surrounding the state of Israel and the existence of the church remain the most valid markers for fulfillment of spiritual prophecy. The world must be conscious of the warfare that exists and must not be engulfed in the deception of a no-devil secularity.

Book excerpt: A young boy's life is shattered when his mentor and older brother breaks his neck playing high school football and lands in a wheelchair. Teetering at poverty line without insurance, all resemblance of a normal family or social life is snatched away from the boy and his family; stress replaces love in the home. Later on, as a young adult, the same little boy witnesses his youngest brother's battle against leukemia, a child killer, and he prays that he doesn't die. As if he hadn't had enough anguish during his youth, twenty years later the same boy, now a man and father himself, is forced to endure the helpless sorrow and pain watching his three year old son fight cancer, a 4 year battle of never ending therapy, pain and tragedy. Hello, my name is Chuck Kesterson, and I am the "young boy" and father who is witness to all the tragedies described above. I have written a 76,000 word, nineteen chapter novel of these non-fictional events. My book's main objectives are to paint a picture with words detailing my wonderful early childhood and how it was shattered with the tragedy of my older brother's accident and my little brother's fight with leukemia. I continue on in biographical sequence to explain my participation as a firefighter during two major airplane crashes, then on to describe the events surrounding my 3 year old boy's four year battle with cancer.

Book The Anguish of Surrender

Download or read book The Anguish of Surrender written by Ulrich A. Straus and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 6, 1941, Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki was one of a handful of men selected to skipper midget subs on a suicide mission to breach Pearl Harbor’s defenses. When his equipment malfunctioned, he couldn’t find the entrance to the harbor. He hit several reefs, eventually splitting the sub, and swam to shore some miles from Pearl Harbor. In the early dawn of December 8, he was picked up on the beach by two Japanese American MPs on patrol. Sakamaki became Prisoner No. 1 of the Pacific War. Japan’s no-surrender policy did not permit becoming a POW. Sakamaki and his fellow soldiers and sailors had been indoctrinated to choose between victory and a heroic death. While his comrades had perished, he had survived. By becoming a prisoner of war, Sakamaki believed he had brought shame and dishonor on himself, his family, his community, and his nation, in effect relinquishing his citizenship. Sakamaki fell into despair and, like so many Japanese POWs, begged his captors to kill him. Based on the author’s interviews with dozens of former Japanese POWs along with memoirs only recently coming to light, The Anguish of Surrender tells one of the great unknown stories of World War II. Beginning with an examination of Japan’s prewar ultranationalist climate and the harsh code that precluded the possibility of capture, the author investigates the circumstances of surrender and capture of men like Sakamaki and their experiences in POW camps. Many POWs, ill and starving after days wandering in the jungles or hiding out in caves, were astonished at the superior quality of food and medical treatment they received. Contrary to expectations, most Japanese POWs, psychologically unprepared to deal with interrogations, provided information to their captors. Trained Allied linguists, especially Japanese Americans, learned how to extract intelligence by treating the POWs humanely. Allied intelligence personnel took advantage of lax Japanese security precautions to gain extensive information from captured documents. A few POWs, recognizing Japan’s certain defeat, even assisted the Allied war effort to shorten the war. Far larger numbers staged uprisings in an effort to commit suicide. Most sought to survive, suffered mental anguish, and feared what awaited them in their homeland. These deeply human stories follow Japanese prisoners through their camp experiences to their return to their welcoming families and reintegration into postwar society. These stories are told here for the first time in English.
