Book An Analytical and Experimental Study of the Plane Incompressible Turbulent Free Shear Layer with Arbitrary Velocity Ratio and Pressure Gradient

Download or read book An Analytical and Experimental Study of the Plane Incompressible Turbulent Free Shear Layer with Arbitrary Velocity Ratio and Pressure Gradient written by Cullen Milo Sabin and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first order approximation is derived in similarity coordinates for the velocity variation across a mixing zone between two streams of different velocities in an arbitrary pressure gradient. The velocity profiles obtained are functions of a single parameter, the ratio of the velocity of the slow stream to that of the fast stream. The first order velocity profiles are compared to those obtained from the complete solution to the zero pressure gradient case by Gortler and good agreement is found when the velocity ratio is greater than 0.5. The form of the eddy diffusivity appropriate to the first order theory is determined from analysis and experimental data. This form leads to an explicit transformation for the similarity coordinate requiring only a single empirical constant for all cases. This similarity coordinate is shown to reduce to Gortler's variable in the constant pressure case. Expressions for the shear and the mixing layer width for the general case are presented, and shown to check the data from several cases. A hot wire anemometer which was specially designed and constructed for taking the experimental data in a water channel is described. (Author).

  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book Turbulent Shear Flows 7 written by Franz Durst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh Symposium was held on the campus of Stanford University with·a combination offacilities and weather which made it possible to add open-air poster sessions and coffee breaks to the programme. This was particularly convenient as the call for papers attracted close to three hundred abstracts and a total number of participants well in excess of this number. Some one hundred and thirty papers were presented in carefully phased parallel sessions and thirty six further contributions were made available in the form of posters. In addition, a lively open-forum session allowed additional speakers to make brief presentations. The staff of the Thermo-Sciences Division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford undertook the local arrangements with evident success and their extensive record of contributions to Turbulent Shear Flows made the venue particularly appropriate. Also, the Centre for Turbulence Studies, based on the faculty of the University and the NASA Ames Research Center, provided a considerable body of expertise with emphasis on direct numerical stimulation.

Book Compressibility Turbulence and High Speed Flow

Download or read book Compressibility Turbulence and High Speed Flow written by Thomas B. Gatski and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compressibility, Turbulence and High Speed Flow introduces the reader to the field of compressible turbulence and compressible turbulent flows across a broad speed range, through a unique complimentary treatment of both the theoretical foundations and the measurement and analysis tools currently used. The book provides the reader with the necessary background and current trends in the theoretical and experimental aspects of compressible turbulent flows and compressible turbulence. Detailed derivations of the pertinent equations describing the motion of such turbulent flows is provided and an extensive discussion of the various approaches used in predicting both free shear and wall bounded flows is presented. Experimental measurement techniques common to the compressible flow regime are introduced with particular emphasis on the unique challenges presented by high speed flows. Both experimental and numerical simulation work is supplied throughout to provide the reader with an overall perspective of current trends. An introduction to current techniques in compressible turbulent flow analysis An approach that enables engineers to identify and solve complex compressible flow challenges Prediction methodologies, including the Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) method, scale filtered methods and direct numerical simulation (DNS) Current strategies focusing on compressible flow control

Book Advances in Turbulence V

Download or read book Advances in Turbulence V written by Roberto Benzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the auspices of the Euromech Committee, the Fifth European Turbulence Conference was held in Siena on 5-8 July 1994. Following the previous ETC meeting in Lyon (1986), Berlin (1988), Stockholm (1990) and Delft (1992), the Fifth ETC was aimed at providing a review of the fundamental aspects of turbulence from a theoretical, numerical and experimental point of view. In the magnificent town of Siena, more than 250 scientists from all over the world, spent four days discussing new ideas on turbulence. As a research worker in the field of turbulence, I must say that the works presented at the Conference, on which this book is based, covered almost all areas in this field. I also think that this book provides a major opportunity to have a complete overview of the most recent research works. I am extremely grateful to Prof. C. Cercignani, Dr. M. Loffredo, and Prof. R. Piva who, as members of the local organizing committee, share the success of the Conference. I also want to thank Mrs. Liu' Catena, for her invaluable contribution to the work done by the local organizing committee and the European Turbulence Committee in the scientific organization of the meeting. The "Servizio Congressi" of the University of Siena provided perfect organization in Siena and wonderful hospitality. The Conference has been supported by CNR, Cira, Alenia, the Universities of Rome "Tor Vergata" and "La Sapienza".
