Book Time Dependent CP Asymmetries and Branching RatioMeasurements in Charmless Three Body B Decays at BABAR

Download or read book Time Dependent CP Asymmetries and Branching RatioMeasurements in Charmless Three Body B Decays at BABAR written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we presented measurements of CP violation and decay rates of B decays in final states not involving a charm quark in the final state. In particular, the time-dependent CP asymmetries of decays which proceed through b 2!s elementary transition is a particularly sensitive probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. In fact, even if the precise measurements of CP conserving and CP violating processes show the success of the CKM picture of the flavour physics, the sector of b 2!s transitions is still not strongly constrained and leaves room for new physics contributions. In particular, we considered the decays which have the cleanest theoretical prediction within the Standard Model: B° 2![phi]K° and B° 2!K{sub s}°K{sub s}°K{sub s}° [beta]{sub eff}{sup SM} = 0.379. We examined the former with a completely new approach with respect to the past: the study of CP violation in the whole KK−K° phase space through a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis. With this approach, we simultaneously measured the CP-violating asymmetries of the [phi]KJ°, f0(980)K° resonant and KK−K° non-resonant contributions, avoiding one of the largest uncertainties which affected the previous measurements of B° 2![phi]K°. We find [beta]{sub eff}(B° 2![phi]K°) = 0.06 ± 0.16 ± 0.05, which is lower than the Standard Model expectation, but it is consistent with it within two standard deviations. Moreover, only a recently developed experimental technique, which allows the determination of the position of B decay vertex when no charged tracks are originating from it, has made possible the measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B° 2!K{sub s}°K{sub s}°K{sub s}° decays. The mixing-induced CP parameter S in the Standard Model should be equal to sin 2[beta] parameter, which is measured with high precision in B 2![c{bar c}]K° decays by the B-factories. This statement is true, in the Standard Model, with excellent approximation for the decays studied in this work. The summary of the measurements in the b 2!s sector is shown in Fig. 9.8 A naive average of the b 2!s penguins, which does not account for the correlations existing among [phi]K°, f0(980)K° and K+K−K°, and that includes also modes with larger theoretical uncertainties, shows that -[eta]{sub CP} x S is lower than sin 2[beta]. This is not an evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model, but the systematic deviation from the expected value is an hint that there is room for it. More compelling evidence for new physics could be obtained measuring significant deviation in each decay channel from Standard Model prediction. Currently all the measurement are statistically limited and therefore an increase in accumulated statistics will shed more light into this quest for New Physics.

Book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements

Download or read book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements written by Markus Röhrken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Download or read book Study of Time dependent CP Asymmetries with Partial Reconstruction of B D pi written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a preliminary measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetries in decays of neutral B mesons to the final states D*[sup[-+]][pi][sup[+-]], using approximately 82 million B[bar B] events collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II storage ring. Events containing these decays are selected with a partial reconstruction technique, in which only the high momentum[pi][sup[+-]] and the low momentum pion from the D*[sup[-+]] decay are reconstructed. The flavor of the other B meson in the event is tagged using the information from kaon and lepton candidates. They measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry[Alpha]= -0.063[+-] 0.024 (stat.)[+-] 0.017 (syst.). They interpret these results in terms of the angles of the unitarity triangle to set a bound onsin(2[beta]+[gamma]).

Book Study of CP Violation in Dalitz Plot Analyses of B Meson Decays to Three Kaons

Download or read book Study of CP Violation in Dalitz Plot Analyses of B Meson Decays to Three Kaons written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM) explains CP violation in terms of the CKM matrix. The BABAR experiment was designed mainly to test the CKM model in B decays. B decays that proceed through b → s loop diagrams, of which B → KKK decays are an example, are sensitive to new physics effects that could lead to deviations from the CKM predictions for CP violation. We present studies of CP violation in the decays B+ → K+K-K+, B+ → KS0KS0K+, and B0 → K+K-KS0, using a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis. These studies are based on approximately 470 million B$\bar{B}$ decays collected by BABAR at the PEP-II collider at SLAC. We perform measurements of time-dependent CP violation in B0 → K+K-KS0, including B0 → [Phi]KS0. We measure a CP-violating phase [beta]eff ([Phi]KS0) = 0.36 ± 0.11 ± 0.04 rad., in agreement with the SM. This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity. We also measure direct CP asymmetries in all three decay modes, including the direct CP asymmetry ACP ([Phi]K+) = (12.8 ± 4.4 ± 1.3)%, which is 2.8 sigma away from zero. This measurement is in tension with the SM, which predicts an asymmetry of a few percent. We also study the resonant and nonresonant features in the B → KKK Dalitz plots. We find that the hypothetical scalar fX(1500) resonance, introduced by prior analyses to explain an unknown peak in the mKK spectrum, cannot adequately describe the data. We conclude instead that the fX(1500) can be explained as the sum of the f0(1500), f'2(1525), and f0(1710) resonances, removing the need for the hypothetical fX(1500). We also find that an exponential nonresonant model, used by previous analyses to describe the broad nonresonant feature seen in B → KKK decays, cannot fully model the data. We introduce a new nonresonant model that contains more free parameters, allows for phase motion, and contains both S-wave and P-wave components.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters in B° 2!KK−K° based on a data sample of approximately 227 million B-meson pairs recorded at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-meson Factory at SLAC. We reconstruct two-body B° decays to [phi](1020)K{sub s}° and [phi](1020)K{sub L}°, and the three-body decay KK−K{sub s}° with [phi](1020)K{sub s}° excluded. For the B° 2![phi]K° decays, they measure sin 2[beta]{sub eff}([phi]K°) = +0.50 ± 0.25(stat){sub -0.04}{sup +0.07}(syst). The B° 2!K+K−K{sub s}° decays are dominated by K+K− S-wave, as determined from an angular analysis; they measure sin 2[beta]{sub eff} (K+K−K{sub s}°) = +0.55 ± 0.22(stat) ± 0.04(syst) ± 0.11(CP), where the last error is due to the uncertainty in the fraction of CP-even contributions to the decay amplitude. We find no evidence for direct CP violation.

Book excerpt: We present new measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries for B° --> D{sup (*)+}d{sup (*)-} decays using (467 ± 5) x 106 B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR detector located at the PEP-II B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We determine the CP-odd fraction of the B° --> D*D*− decays to be R(up tack) = 0.158 ± 0.028 ± 0.006 and find CP asymmetry parameters for the CP-even component of the decay S+ = -0.76 ± 0.16 ± 0.04 and C+ = 0.00 ± 0.12 ± 0.02. We measure S = -0.63±0.36±0.05 and C = -0.07±0.23±0.03 for B° --> DD−, S = -0.62±0.21±0.03 and C = 0.08 ± 0.17 ± 0.04 for B° --> D*+D−, and S = -0.73 ± 0.23 ± 0.05 and C = 0.00 ± 0.17 ± 0.03 for B° --> D+D*−. For the B° --> D*{sup ±}D{sup {-+}} decays, we also determine the CP-violating asymmetry A = 0.008 ± 0.048 {+-} 0.013. In each case, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The measured values for the asymmetries are all consistent with the Standard Model.

Book Amplitude Analysis and Measurement of the Time dependent CP Asymmetry of B0 to KsKsKs Decays

This book was released on 2012 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the first results on the Dalitz-plot structure and improved measurements of the time-dependent CP-violation parameters of the process B° → K{sub S}°K{sub S}°K{sub S}° obtained using 468 x 106 B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. The Dalitz-plot structure is probed by a time-integrated amplitude analysis that does not distinguish between B° and {bar B}° decays. We measure the total inclusive branching fraction?(B° → K{sub S}°K{sub S}°K{sub S}°) = (6.19 ± 0.48 ± 0.15 ± 0.12) x 10−6, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third represents the Dalitz-plot signal model dependence. We also observe evidence for the intermediate resonant states f0(980), f0(1710), and f2(2010). Their respective product branching fractions are measured to be (2.70{sub -1.19}{sup +1.25} ± 0.36 ± 1.17) x 10−6, (0.50{sub -0.24}{sup +0.46} ± 0.04 ± 0.10) x 10−6, and (0.54{sub -0.20}{sup +0.21} ± 0.03 ± 0.52) x 10−6. Additionally, we determine the mixing-induced CP-violation parameters to be S = -0.94{sub -0.21}{sup +0.24} ± 0.06 and C = -0.17 ± 0.18 ± 0.04, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These values are in agreement with the standard model expectation.

Book Improved Measurement of the CP Violating Asymmetry Amplitude Sin2beta

Download or read book Improved Measurement of the CP Violating Asymmetry Amplitude Sin2beta written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present updated results on time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurements use a data sample of about 62 million [Upsilon](4S) [yields] B[bar B] decays collected between 1999 and 2001 by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. In this sample we study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing a charmonium meson and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. We measure sin2[beta] = 0.75 [+-] 0.09 (stat) [+-] 0.04 (syst) and lambda = 0.92 [+-] 0.06 (stat) [+-] 0.02 (syst). The latter is consistent with the Standard Model expectation of no direct CP violation. These results are preliminary.
