According to empirical evidence, one of the most important success factors in implementing inclusive schooling are the attitudes of the actors involved. Previous studies have shown that positive attitudes towards inclusive schooling are not only a condition for success regarding the implementation, but also an important outcome variable of inclusive education. The present study provides empirical insights into the attitudes towards students with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. A study called ATIS-STEP (Attitudes Towards Inclusive Schooling - Students', TEachers' and Parents' Attitudes) was conducted in the school year 2016/17 in 48 inclusive classrooms in Austria. It is the first study to provide longitudinal data that examines the attitudes of the three different stakeholder groups: students, teachers and parents. Furthermore, the interdependency of the attitudes of the three groups, as well as the influence of previous contact experience on the attitudes are analyzed and discussed. Book excerpt: Teachers’ self-efficacy is shown to be affected by many different factors, including students, parents/families, and schools. Teachers' perception of a lack of parent/family support may be related to their reports of self-efficacy, that is, their perceived ability to successfully teach their students. This study uses data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 to investigate the relationship between math teachers’ perceived lack of parent/family support and their teaching self-efficacy. This study controlled for teachers' educational attainment, sex, and race to improve the estimates of this relationship. Results show that there is negative relationship between teachers' perceptions of a lack of parent/family support and teaching self-efficacy. Teachers tend to report significantly lower levels of self-efficacy when there is a higher lack in parent/family support. This relationship remained significant after introducing the control variables during regression analysis. The results can help teachers and schools be informative on this relationship and the affect it has in the classroom.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. Book excerpt: Research on the impact of expectancy on achievement is mostly conducted from the teachers’ or parents’ perspectives. However, research has also found that students’ cognitive, emotional, and social awareness can significantly alter and direct their behaviour within their learning environments. Despite the importance of student perceptions, in a recent survey by the Ministry of Education, students indicated their perspectives in class to be a crucial yet absent element of effective learning. Focusing on students as part of the solution, the current study assessed the relations between students’ perceptions of parent and teacher expectations and student motivation, learning, and achievement. The study also explored students’ views on learning improvements within class and home contexts. A concurrent mixed methods design was adopted. Likert scale survey ratings from 917 Year 7 and 8 students were analysed. Perceptions of teacher and parent expectations were predictive of student self-efficacy, conceptions of learning, deep and strategic learning approaches, and achievement. Further, perceptions of teacher expectations emerged as the stronger predictor of the dependent variables. Students who perceived parents and teachers as having high expectations scored highly in student motivation and learning compared to students who perceived parents and teachers as having lower expectations. Moreover, high perceptions of teacher expectations emerged as having a buffering effect on low perceptions of parent expectations. Thematic analysis of students’ responses revealed teacher expectations, supportive student-adult relationships, awareness of student perspectives, and quality instructions and feedback as the most prominent influences on student learning. The study urges formation of school-level systems to promote students’ perceptions of learning and teaching within class. Further, the study reinforces fostering parental involvement in the form of high expectations and autonomy-oriented learning involvement at home. Educational implications of the findings are discussed.

There is a strong correlation between parent satisfaction and school communication practices. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to see if there was a positive impact on student achievement when specific parent communication with the school exists. There were low API scores and a lack of meaningful connections between parents, students, and teachers. The research question was, How does customized parent-teacher communication about student learning impact student achievement? Customized communication is a blending of Epstein’s (1995) Type 2 communicating and Type 4 learning at home. To improve student achievement via improving parent-teacher communication, customized communication took the form of a weekly newsletter. The study took place at one high school located in Southern California. Spanish 1 and 2 classes and their parents were part of the study. Before intervention, a chapter test served as a pretest to provide class test averages and revealed similarity among the control and experimental classes. Parents were surveyed to gather the type of desired communication they wanted in a newsletter. Intervention was given in the form of weekly newsletters to two experimental classes using customized communication about student learning. Finally, a chapter test served as a post-test to reveal any changes in class test score averages as a result of customized communication. A quantitative methodology was used. Data were collected and analyzed through student pretest averages, a parent survey, and student post-test averages. Through personal communication, parents expressed positive perceptions of the intervention. However, a t-Test to compare pre and post test averages, revealed that the null hypothesis must be rejected. There was no significant change in test averages as a result of the intervention. This study could be expanded with more time to see if more customized-communication would impact student achievement. It is a study that opens the door to continue communication that parents value.
