Book Airborne Measurement of Aerosol Size Distributions Over Northern Europe

Download or read book Airborne Measurement of Aerosol Size Distributions Over Northern Europe written by Ted S. Cress and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerosol distributions measured with a Royco 220 particle counter over Northern Europe in Spring 1976, Fall 1976, and Summer 1977 are presented. The vertical aerosol structures were measured with an integrating nephelometer and are presented to give context to discrete aerosol size distribution and concentration measurements at altitudes near 500 m, 3000 m, and 6000 m. Analysis of aerosol data indicates that the aerosol distribution shapes at altitudes of 1.8 km and 6.0 km are very similar to distributions measured earlier over the midwestern U.S. using an impactor. Sampling analysis, and comparison to nephelometer measurements, indicate the aerosol measurements probably always represent the dry aerosol particle distribution vice the actual distribution (in balance with existing relative humidity) sensed by the nephelometer. These data provide an excellent picture of the relative changes that were found to occur in the vertical, and in space and time, with changing synoptic conditions.

Book Satellite Measurements of Marine Aerosols

Download or read book Satellite Measurements of Marine Aerosols written by M. Griggs and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to measure atmospheric aerosols over ocean surfaces has been demonstrated using several different satellite sensors. Landat data originally showed that a linear relationship exists between the upwelling visible radiance and the aerosol optical thickness. Analysis of NOAA-6 AVHRR data obtained at several different locations, in coincidence with ground truth measurements, show that the Channel 1 (0.65 micron) radiances can be used to determine the aerosol optical thickness. The good agreement between the results at different locations suggests that the technique could be used in an operational system. A technique using channel 1 and Channel 2 (0.86 micron) radiances to determine the aerosol size distribution is discussed, and, in spite of uncertainties in the satellite and ground truth data, a preliminary analysis shows that useful estimates of the size distribution can be obtained. Book Measurements of Atmospheric Aerosols Experimental Methods and Results of Measurements Off the East Coast of the United States

Download or read book Measurements of Atmospheric Aerosols Experimental Methods and Results of Measurements Off the East Coast of the United States written by William A. Hoppel and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate measurements of the size distribution of atmospheric aerosols in the size (radius) range from 0.006 to 2.2 micrometers made along the east coast of the United States--both at a shore site (Wallops Island) and from a ship within 300 km of the coast--are presented. Some measurements at Washington, D.C., are included to contrast urban aerosols with aged continental air off the east coast. As air advects from land to sea, there is a rather rapid decay of particles smaller than 0.05 micrometers during the first day or so. After this initial decay of small particles the size distribution was often found to remain remarkably stable for hours. Significant changes in the size distribution were often associated with changes in air masses and meteorological conditions. Some of the changes can be explained qualitatively. Others, such as a pronounced double peak which occurred occasionally in the fine-particle range, are difficult to understand. Measurements of the activation parameter for submicrometer particles were also made and yield values in the range of 0.1 to 0.55. Using the measured size distribution, electromagnetic extinction was calculated for the wavelength range 0.3 to 12 micrometers. The calculations compare favorably to the measured scattering coefficient at 0.55 micrometers in wavelength. Particles in the radius range 0.1 to 0.3 micrometer made the largest contribution to the total extinction at optical wavelengths on nearly all occasions.
