Book An Analysis of Rapid Creek Basin

Download or read book An Analysis of Rapid Creek Basin written by Linda Wolf and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is a very important and essential, non-renewable resource. The evaluation of water is constantly being examined. The desire to improve the water resources available is always a concern. The main focus of this documentation is an analysis of the Rapid Creek Basin in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Two major areas are discussed: 1) Background on water: its uses, composition, quality, development and management policies, 2) The actual analysis of Rapid Creek: methods and measurements, observations and conclusions.

Book Analysis of the Geometry Adjustments to Rapid Creek in a 20 year Period

Download or read book Analysis of the Geometry Adjustments to Rapid Creek in a 20 year Period written by Brandon Miles Kruge and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid Creek has been heavily modified through Rapid City. The hydrologic regime has been modified by the presence of reservoirs in the upper basin (Pactola and Deerfield). The bed material sized sediment load regime has been modified by the capture of coarse sediments within those reservoirs and in Canyon Lake. The creek has been channelized, and the banks of the stream have been artificially armored in some reaches to prevent lateral migration. This study seeks to answer the question of what geometric adjustments still occur in such a constrained context. Cross-sections that were surveyed in 2000 as part of a fish habitat analysis were resurveyed in 2020 in a 3.31-milereach of Rapid Creek that extends downstream of Canyon Lake to the upstream end of Founders Park in Rapid City. A total of 151 cross-sections were repeat surveyed and each pair of cross-sections was evaluated in cross-sectional view to quantify differences. The bankfull elevation (where the flow just overtops the bank and begins to engage the flood plain) forms the natural upper boundary to define the cross-sectional area. A reference surface of the 1.75-year recurrence interval flow (used to replace the bankfull elevation due to varying bank conditions) was used to define flow areas for the 2000 and2020 surveyed cross-sections. Of the 151 cross-sections, 35 showed significant (> 20%) area increase between 2000 and 2020, indicating net erosion of the section. Twenty-nine showed significant (>15%) decrease between 2000 and 2020, indicating net deposition. No data distinction could be made for 18 sections due to a significant vertical error in the2000 surveyed cross-sections which could not be resolved. Sixty-nine showed an insignificant change in cross-sectional area (the 2020 area was between 85% and 120%of the 2000 area). Of the 69 that showed insignificant cross-sectional area change, this does not necessarily indicate that no erosion or deposition occurred. Twenty-four involved insignificant deposition and/or erosion. However, the remaining 41 included some that had laterally migrated and concurrently deposited approximately equal volumes. Some did not laterally shift but had rearranged the bed within the section such that net volumes were approximately equal. A general upstream to downstream trend in change was identified. In the upstream portion of the study area, geometric changes were negligible. Proceeding downstream, approximately 1.3 miles below the upper end of the study area, more substantial bed/bank elevation changes were observed. This reach has experienced net erosion. Further downstream, approximately 1.9 miles below the upper end of the study area, is a reach that has undergone net deposition. A two-dimensional hydraulic analysis of the middle reach that underwent the most substantial geometric changes revealed that velocity distributions and boundary shear stress distributions were altered. While the occurrence of a dynamic channel is generally positive for overall stream functionality, the ultimate dynamic equilibrium state of such a constrained system still is not known. Whether changes that have been observed within the last 20 years indicate a trend of ongoing change or just simple variability about some mean condition has not been ascertained and will require future observations. The implications of the hydraulic changes observed on fish habitat also warrants further exploration.

Book The Water Quality of Rapid Creek

Download or read book The Water Quality of Rapid Creek written by Lindsay E. Young and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid Creek originates at the Pactola Reservoir dam in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Its route continues through Rapid City, SD, completing its flow as it enters the Cheyenne River, approximately 20 miles east of Rapid City. This research focuses on nonpoint source pollutants and their effects on the health of Rapid Creek within city limits. Over a period of two months, the water quality of Rapid Creek was tested at five different sites. Temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen content were the physical properties collected. Concentrations of nitrates, phosphates, chlorides and total suspended solids were also determined. A final analysis of these seven properties was performed to determine if nonpoint source pollution affects Rapid Creek.
