Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A partial wave analysis of K+-nucleon scattering in the momentum range from 0 to 1.5 GeV/c addresing the uncertainties of the results and comparing them with several previous analyses. It is found that the treatment of the reaction threshold behaviour is particularly important. It is found a T=0 scattering length which is not consistent with zero, as has been claimed by other analyses. The T=0 phase shifts for l>0 are consistent with a pure spin-orbit potential. Some indications for the production of a T=0 pentaquark with spin-parity D5/2+ are discussed. Differential cross sections for the reactions 12C, 6Li and 40Ca are calculated using the presents results from the phase shifts and also the work from Hyslop et al. and Martin s phase shifts. The ratio for the three elements to deuterium are showed.

Book Electron Scattering for Nuclear and Nucleon Structure

Download or read book Electron Scattering for Nuclear and Nucleon Structure written by John Dirk Walecka and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scattering of high-energy electrons from nuclear and nucleon targets essentially provides a microscope for examining the structure of these tiny objects. The best evidence we have on what nuclei and nucleons actually look like comes from electron scattering. This book examines the motivation for electron scattering and develops the theoretical analysis of the process. It discusses our current theoretical understanding of the underlying structure of these systems at appropriate levels of resolution and sophistication, as well as summarising present experimental capabilities. Suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduates and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of baryon spectroscopy provide one avenue to learn about the nature of QCD confinement. By carrying out systematic multichannel analyses of a broad variety of data sets from many different experiments and types of reactions, we can verify the predictions of quark models and make predictions about new baryon structures. Partial-wave analysis (PWA), in the context of quantum mechanics, refers to a technique for describing scattering problems by decomposing each physical observable into its constituent quantum components. The extracted partial-wave amplitudes can be used in further analyses by experi-mentalists; however, the current available partial-wave amplitudes for kaon-nucleon scattering are unable to describe scattering processes involving KL ̳0 beams, which means they are incorrect and need to be improved. The goal of this work was to carry out the first-ever multichannel partial-wave analysis of all available world data for KN [right arrow] KN reactions, where K represents a kaon (a meson containing an anti-strange quark) and N represents a nucleon (a proton or neutron). Specifically, we performed coupled-channel fits of data for the reactions, K+p [right arrow] K+p, K+n [right arrow] K+n, K+n [right arrow] K0p, K0p [right arrow] K+n and KL ̳0p [right arrow] KS ̳0p. The KL ̳0p [right arrow] KS ̳0p reaction also requires KN [right arrow] KN amplitudes, which were obtained from a prior Kent State University PWA. The ultimate goal was to find improved energy- dependent amplitudes for a simultaneous description of these reactions, to determine whether the available world data are self-consistent, and to search for possible exotic "pentaquarks" in the KN system. There are two main approaches found in the literature to extract partial-wave amplitudes. The first is called an energy-dependent PWA. In this approach, all the data for all reactions are analyzed simultaneously in a single model. The second approach is called a single-energy PWA, which has no inherent model bias. In the single-energy PWA, all data within a specified energy bin are fitted by approximating the partial-wave amplitudes as constants. The approach used in this work was initiated by first finding single-energy solutions, which were then fitted using a unitary, multichannel parametrization of the amplitudes. The resulting energy-dependent solutions were then used to constrain a new round of single-energy fits. This procedure was iterated until the energy-dependent solutions gave a good description of all the data. This work was motivated by a proposal to develop a KL ̳0 beam facility in Hall D at Jefferson Lab, which aims to search for hyperon resonances. An understanding of the underlying KN [right arrow] KN reactions is fundamental to that work.
