Book Parallel Processing and Applied Mathematics

Download or read book Parallel Processing and Applied Mathematics written by Roman Wyrzykowski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-04-14 with total page 1193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is our pleasure to provide you with the volume containing the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Parallel Processing and Applied Mathe- tics, which was held in Cz ̧ estochowa, a Polish city famous for its Jasna Gora Monastery, on September 7–10, 2003. The ?rst PPAM conference was held in 1994 and was organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Cz ̧ estochowa University of Technology in its hometown. The main idea behind the event was to provide a forum for researchers involved in applied and computational mathematics and parallel computing to exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. Conference organizers hoped that this arrangement would result in cross-pollination and lead to successful research collaborations. In - dition, they hoped that the initially mostly Polish conference would grow into an international event. The fact that these assumptions were correct was proven by the growth of the event. While the ?rst conference consisted of 41 presen- tions, the conference reached 150 participants in Na l ̧ ecz ́ ow in 2001. In this way the PPAM conference has become one of the premiere Polish conferences, and de?nitely the most important one in the area of parallel/distributed computing andappliedmathematics. This year’s meeting gathered almost 200 participants from 32 countries. A strict refereeing process resulted in the acceptance of approximately 150 cont- buted presentations, while the rejection rate was approximately 33%.

Book Partitioning and Scheduling Parallel Programs for Multiprocessors

Download or read book Partitioning and Scheduling Parallel Programs for Multiprocessors written by Vivek Sarkar and published by Pitman Publishing. This book was released on 1989 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of the first to address the problem of forming useful parallelism from potential parallelism and to provide a general solution. The book presents two approaches to automatic partitioning and scheduling so that the same parallel program can be made to execute efficiently on widely different multiprocessors. The first approach is based on a macro dataflow model in which the program is partitioned into tasks at compile time and the tasks are scheduled on processors at run time. The second approach is based on a compile time scheduling model, where both the partitioning and scheduling are performed at compile time. Both approaches have been implemented in partition programs written in the single assignment language SISAL. The inputs to the partitioning and scheduling algorithms are a graphical representation of the parallel program and a list of parameters describing the target multiprocessor. Execution profile information is used to derive compile-time estimates of execution times and data sizes in the program. Both the macro dataflow and compile-time scheduling problems are expressed as optimization problems and are shown to be NP complete in the strong sense. Efficient approximation algorithms for these problems are presented. Finally, the effectiveness of the partitioning and scheduling algorithms is studied by multiprocessor simulations of various SISAL benchmark programs for different target multiprocessor parameters. Vivek Sarkar is a Member of Research Staff at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. Partitioning and Scheduling Parallel Programs for Multiprocessing is included in the series Research Monographs in Parallel and Distributed Computing. Copublished with Pitman Publishing.

Book Recent Advances in Parallel Virtual Machine and Message Passing Interface

Download or read book Recent Advances in Parallel Virtual Machine and Message Passing Interface written by Yiannis Cotronis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are the most frequently used tools for programming according to the message passing paradigm, which is considered one of the best ways to develop parallel appli- tions. This volume comprises 50 revised contributions presented at the Eighth - ropean PVM/MPI Users’ Group Meeting, which was held on Santorini (Thera), Greece,23–26September2001.TheconferencewasorganizedbytheDepartment of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens, Greece. This conference has been previously held in Balatofured, ̈ Hungary (2000), Barcelona, Spain (1999), Liverpool, UK (1998), and Krakow, Poland (1997). The ?rst three conferences were devoted to PVM and were held at the TU Munich, Germany (1996), the ENS Lyon, France (1995), and the University of Rome (1994). This conference has become a forum for users and developers of PVM, MPI, and other message passing environments. Interaction between these groups has proved to be very useful for developing new ideas in parallel computing and for applying some of those already existent to new practical ?elds. The main topics of the meeting were evaluation and performance of PVM and MPI, extensions and improvements to PVM and MPI, algorithms using the message passing paradigm, andapplicationsinscienceandengineeringbasedonmessagepassing. The conference included one tutorial on MPI and 9 invited talks on advances in MPI, cluster computing, network computing, Grid computing, and parallel programming and programming systems. These proceedings contain papers on the 46 oral presentations together with 4 poster presentations.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a huge amount of innovation in both the principles and practice of operating systems Over the same period, the core ideas in a modern operating system - protection, concurrency, virtualization, resource allocation, and reliable storage - have become widely applied throughout computer science. Whether you get a job at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or any other leading-edge technology company, it is impossible to build resilient, secure, and flexible computer systems without the ability to apply operating systems concepts in a variety of settings. This book examines the both the principles and practice of modern operating systems, taking important, high-level concepts all the way down to the level of working code. Because operating systems concepts are among the most difficult in computer science, this top to bottom approach is the only way to really understand and master this important material.
