Book An Analysis of Freshwater Mussels Unionidae Along Luxapalila Creek Mississippi 1999 Studies

Download or read book An Analysis of Freshwater Mussels Unionidae Along Luxapalila Creek Mississippi 1999 Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1999, 14 sites along Luxapalila Creek between Steens, Mississippi, and Waterworks Road Bridge (River Mile 6.2), were searched for freshwater mussels (Family: Unionidae). All collecting was done by hand and without divers. The purpose was to obtain information that could be used to assess the effectiveness of reasonable and prudent measures and their terms and conditions to reduce impacts to mussels caused by downstream channelization that took place in 1994 to 1996. In addition, results would be used to determine the likelihood of future losses (or incidental take) of federally listed mussel species in the project area. Fifteen species of freshwater mussels, in addition to Corbicula fluminea (Asian clam), were collected. Live specimens of the endemc, federally listed threatened Pleurobema decisum (southern clubshell) was collected at one site. The most abundant living species were Quadrula asperata (Alabama orb) and Lampsilis sframinea claiboniensis (southern fatmucket) which comprised 31.2 and 19.5 percent of the fauna. The third and fourth most abundant species, Tritogonia vemicosa (pistolgrip) and Lampsilis omata (southern pocketbook), comprised 18.7 and 10.9 percent of the collection. The remaining 11 species each comprised less than 4 percent of the fauna. Mussel abundance has changed little in this stream, based upon results of a survey conducted in 1992 and studies conducted in 1997 and 1998.

Book An Evaluation of Freshwater Mussels in the Lower Ohio River in Relation to the Olmsted Locks and Dam Project 1998 Studies

Download or read book An Evaluation of Freshwater Mussels in the Lower Ohio River in Relation to the Olmsted Locks and Dam Project 1998 Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys were conducted in August 1998 to assess community characteristics, population demography of dominant species, status of endangered species, and characteristics of nonindigenous populations of freshwater bivalves in the lower Ohio River (LOR). Data will be used to analyze ecological effects of construction and operation of a new lock and dam at River Mile (RM) 964.4. Primary focus has been on a prominent mussel bed just downstream of the project at Olmsted, Illinois. Studies have shown that this mussel bed extends approximately from elevation 278 ft nearshore to 267 ft farshore. Moderate (20-50 individuals per square meter) or high density (>50 individuals per square meter) assemblages of mussels tend to be at more central elevations on the bed from approximately RM 966.4 to 968.3.

Book Ecology and Evolution of the Freshwater Mussels Unionoida

Download or read book Ecology and Evolution of the Freshwater Mussels Unionoida written by G. Bauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All those who think that bivalves are boring are in the best company. Karl von Frisch is reported to have turned the pages more quickly in texts where bivalves were treated because, according to him, they literally lack any behaviour. The fact that they can filtrate huge amounts of water, burrow into the sedi ment, actively swim, drill holes into rocks and boats or detect shadows with the aid of pretty blue eyes located on the rim of their mantle obviously left v. Frisch unimpressed. Why, then, a book on the large freshwater mussels (Naiads or Unionoida), which on first sight are much less spectacular than the marine ones? The main reason is that they are keepers of secrets which they reveal only on close and careful inspection. This is not only true for the pearls some species produce and which over centuries have contributed to the treasures of bishops and kings, but particularly for their ecology: their life cycles are linked with those of fishes, some can occur in incredible densities and some can live for more than 100 years. Thus, the presence or absence of naiads in a lake or stream has manifold implications.
