Book Rich and Poor in the Shepherd of Hermas

Download or read book Rich and Poor in the Shepherd of Hermas written by Carolyn Osiek and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The references to social differences in the Shepherd, especially in the Second Similitude and Tenth Mandate, suggest a social context in which traditional biblical values of attention to the poor are in tension with the behavior of members of the church community to which the author belongs. Rather than the usual judgment of the Shepherd as a treatise on early penitential discipline, it is in fact a window into the social relationships and challenges of an early second-century Christian community.

  • Author : Miranda Shaw
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 1995-10-08
  • ISBN : 9780691010908
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Passionate Enlightenment written by Miranda Shaw and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1995-10-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who reads a Tantric text or enters a Tantric temple immediately encounters a pantheon of female Buddhas and a host of female enlighteners known as "dakinis," who dance and leap in joyous poses that communicate a sense of mastery and spiritual power. This striking female imagery is fully compatible with Shaw's findings. Drawing on interviews and archival research conducted during two years of fieldwork in India and Nepal, including more than forty previously unnoticed works by women of the Pala period (eighth through twelfth centuries C.E.), she substantially reinterprets the history of Tantric Buddhism during its first four centuries. In her view, the Tantric theory of this period promotes an ideal of cooperative, mutually liberative relationships between women and men while encouraging a sense of reliance on women as a source of spiritual insight and power.

Book The Fruit of the Vine

Download or read book The Fruit of the Vine written by Carey Ellen Walsh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of viticulture--from planting vines to drinking wine--in Israelite culture is the focus of Walsh's investigation. Viticulture, no less than drinking, marked the social sphere of Israelite practitioners, and so its details were often enlisted to describe social relations in the Hebrew Bible. These features of everyday life offer important clues for the reconstruction of Israelite social history, the literary constructions of the oral transmitters, authors, and redactors and for thematic and theological meanings attached to biblical representations of the vine and wine imagery.

Book excerpt: "Gould's attention to the ironies and ambivalences that abound in the practice of homesteading provides fresh and insightful perspective."—Beth Blissman, Oberlin College "This luminously written ethnography of the worlds that homesteaders make significantly broadens our understanding of modern American religion. In richly textured descriptions of the everyday lives and work of the homesteaders with whom she lived, Gould helps us understand how the tasks of clearing land, making bread, and building a garden wall were ways of taking on the most urgent issues of meaning and ethics."—Robert A. Orsi, Harvard University "This is a fascinating, authoritative, and accessible look at one of America's most important subcultures. If you ever get around to building that cabin in the woods, or especially if you don't, you'll want this volume on the bookshelf."—Bill McKibben, author of Wandering Home: A Long Walk Across America's Most Hopeful Landscape "Rebecca Gould's compelling book on American homesteading brings the study of the religion-nature connection in the U.S. to a new place."—Catherine L. Albanese, author of Nature Religion in America: From the Algonkian Indians to the New Age "Gould provides brand new data and sheds new interpretive light on familiar figures and movements. At Home in Nature is a model of how to seamlessly blend ethnography and history."—Bron Taylor, University of Florida, editor of the Encyclopedia of Religion and Nature
