Book excerpt: Contract farming can be described as half-way house between farm production and corporate farming. It involves contractual relation between farmers and central processing or exporting unit/firms. Seed is a vital input and dynamic instrument for increasing agricultural production. The present study was conducted at Mithapukur and Pirgachha Upazilas under Rangpur district to assess the profitability, contribution of factors to production and changes in socio-economic status of the vegetable seed contract growers. In total 90 open pollinated vegetables seed contract growers were randomly selected in consultation with BADC personnel at the rate of 30 contract seed growers (20 small and 10 medium) from each of the three selected vegetable crops viz., tomato, brinjal and okra. Total cost, gross margin, gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio (undiscounted) were estimated for economic analysis. The results revealed that per hectare (ha) total cost, gross return and net return of open pollinated vegetables seed production were estimated at Tk. 253136, 360000 and 106864 in tomato, Tk. 219765, 430000 and 210235 in brinjal and, Tk. 185072, 237120 and 52048 in okra, respectively. Benefit cost ratios came out to be 1.42, 1.96 and 1.28 for tomato, brinjal and okra seed production, respectively which was found a bit higher for the brinjal seed contract growers. The marginal productivity analysis indicated that the inequality of the contract growers in the study area have failed to show their efficiency in using the resources. The overall socio-economic status of the sample contract growers were found increased by about 26.02 percent. Scarcity of skilled labor, inadequate and untimely capital, non-existence of crop insurance were the problems confronting the open pollinated vegetables seed contract growers. Fixing scale of finance, crop insurance and government intervention were the suggestions.

Book excerpt: This study compares contract and non-contract growers of apples and green onions in Shandong Province, China in order to explore the constraints on participation and the impact of contract farming on income. We find little evidence that firms prefer to work with larger farms, though all farms in the area are quite small. Using a Heckman selection-correction model, we find that contract farming raises income even after controlling for observable and unobservable household characteristics. These results suggest that contract farming can help raise small-farm income, though questions remain regarding the number of farmers that can be brought into such schemes.

The proliferation of African growers producing under contract is in fact part of broader changes in the global agro-food system. In this examination of agricultural restructuring and its effect upon various African societies, editors Peter Little and Michael Watts bring together anthropologists, economists, geographers, political scientists, and sociologists to explore the origins, forms, and consequences of contract production in several African countries, particularly Kenya, the Gambia, Zimbabwe, and the Ivory Coast. Documenting how contract production links farmers, agribusiness, and the state, the contributors examine problematic aspects of this method of agrarian reform. Their case studies, based on long-term field work and analysis on the village and household level, chart the complex effects of contract production on the organization of work and the labor process, rural inequality, gender relations, labor markets, local accumulation strategies, and regional development. Living Under Contract reveals that contract farming represents a distinctive form in which African growers are incorporated into national and world markets. This Legislative Study develops that research and focuses on the regulatory frameworks for contract farming, aiming to highlight different possible approaches for different contexts. Responsible contract farming can be a powerful tool for small scale farmers in developing countries to move towards larger scalecommercial production. It can create economic wealth, contribute to supply chain efficiency through the production of higher quantities of better quality products, and contribute to achieving domestic food security objectives. Maximizing these benefits while minimizing the inherent risks of contract farming is reliant upon the forging of an enabling environment, a key part of which is the domestic regulatory framework. This Legislative Study provides guidance to domestic regulators and other interested readers on how to appraise and potentially reform domestic regulatory frameworks to achieve responsible contract farming. Recognising that different countries and contextual realties may benefit from different regulatory solutions, this Study provides several examples, supported by representative case studies, on how contract farming can be regulated, without promoting a single solution as the most appropriate. Book excerpt: Community seed banks first appeared towards the end of the 1980s, established with the support of international and national non-governmental organizations. This book is the first to provide a global review of their development and includes a wide range of case studies. Countries that pioneered various types of community seed banks include Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Zimbabwe. In the North, a particular type of community seed bank emerged known as a seed-savers network. Such networks were first established in Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA before spreading to other countries. Over time, the number and diversity of seed banks has grown. In Nepal, for example, there are now more than 100 self-described community seed banks whose functions range from pure conservation to commercial seed production. In Brazil, community seed banks operate in various regions of the country. Surprisingly, despite 25 years of history and the rapid growth in number, organizational diversity and geographical coverage of community seed banks, recognition of their roles and contributions has remained scanty. The book reviews their history, evolution, experiences, successes and failures (and reasons why), challenges and prospects. It fills a significant gap in the literature on agricultural biodiversity and conservation, and their contribution to food sovereignty and security.
