Download or read book An Americanization Program in Education and Recreation Classic Reprint written by Philip Louis Seman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Americanization Program in Education and Recreation We have in the Institute an agency which has successfully given opportunity for self-expression and for development of the social needs of large portions of the Jewish community without their feeling the stigma of patronage. The very fact that a charge is made for every activity, no matter how small, nor how young the children, serves as an indication of the self-support principle which is involved. In other words, the Institute is a democratic institution. The people who come to its building regard it as their home, as their social gathering place, as the place that they have helped to make, and where they have the opportunity of carrying out their ideals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Americanization The purpose of this book is to aid men and women giving all or part time to the work of Americanization. It emphasizes the heritage that is ours, submits a pro gram and a plan Of operation, outlines how men and women may be trained to do the work, and points\to the goal which all Americanization workers should keep before them. America suffers with a world that is worn and torn. In these days of reconstruction we need to recall the heroism of men and women of all lands who have suffered to bring about a better to-morrow. Amer ica's future is full of hope, but it is inseparably involved in the question of whether or not we are willing to weld our five million aliens to the body politic by sympathy, justice, good will, and brotherly kindness. This can be done if we have unfaltering faith that out of all aliens, staunch defenders of this great democracy can be formed. Book An American at Oxford Classic Reprint

Download or read book An American at Oxford Classic Reprint written by John Corbin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American at Oxford At a superficial glance the testator's intention seems to have been to send the students to Oxford directly from American schools. Such a course, it seems to me, could only work harm. Even if the educational and residential facilities afforded at Oxford were on the whole superior to those of American universities, which they are not, the dif-1 ference could not compensate the student for the loss of his American university course with all it means in forming lifelong friendships among his countrymen and in assimilating the national spirit. If, however, the Oxford scholarships were awarded to recent graduates of American universities, the greatest advantage might result. The student might then modify his native training so as to complete it and make it more effective. Now the wording of the testament requires only that the American scholars shall commence residence as undergraduates. This they will be able to do whatever their previous training, and in fact this is what Americans at Oxford have always done in the past. The most valuable A. B. Leaves the field. Book The Education of the American Citizen Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Education of the American Citizen Classic Reprint written by Arthur Twining Hadley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the American Citizen IN many of the political writings of the day, there is a tendency to lay too much stress on the mechanism of government and of industry, and too little stress on the force by which this mechanism is kept at work. In recent educational movements, also, too much thought is perhaps given to the problem of preparing men and women to take their several places in a social machine, and too little to the development of that power and spirit upon which the perpetuation of our whole social order depends. From my public addresses and magazine articles of the past few years, I have tried to select those which emphasize the more neglected side of these questions, and to arrange them in a continuous series. In a book thus prepared, it is inevitable that there should be some repe tition and some apparent inconsistencies. If the reader is perplexed by any of these things, he will perhaps find the explanation in the date of the different utterances and the special conditions under which they were made public. Book Studies in History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in History Classic Reprint written by Edward F. Mcsweeney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in History The ideal causing prominent Americans to accept without protest the move ment for the revision of American History was of a character to enlist the sympathy and support of many who did not realize that their minds were being swayed by an impulse the very reverse of that which caused Washington to utter his warning. The desire for world peace possesses the minds of all who seek for orderly progress, but those furthering this laudable aim, utilizing the methods adopted by the revis'ionists, overlooked the danger to domestic peace through the disintegrating force of racial ostracisms, foreign to the genius and temper of a Republic that owes its origin and maintenance to many races. And which can survive in its present form and strength only so long as the allegiance of its citizens is safeguarded by an ardent patriotism. As stated by the late Secretary of the Interior, Franklin K. Lane. Before we take up this work of Americanization of others we must first be sure that we have Americanized ourselves. Always keeping in mind that the membership of the Knights of Columbus is drawn from various countries on the American continent, the unchangeable pur pose of the History Program is that all should be encouraged to love their own country. And in seeking to serve their own land, in faith, reverence and affection, to achieve the basis of a common brotherhood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, leading historian of education Jeffrey E. Mirel retells a story we think we know, in which public schools forced a draconian Americanization on the great waves of immigration of a century ago. Ranging from the 1890s through the World War II years, Mirel argues that Americanization was a far more nuanced and negotiated process from the start, much shaped by immigrants themselves.Drawing from detailed descriptions of Americanization programs for both schoolchildren and adults in three cities (Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit) and from extensive analysis of foreign-language newspapers, Mirel shows how immigrants confronted different kinds of Americanization. When native-born citizens contemptuously tried to force them to forsake their home religions, languages, or histories, immigrants pushed back strongly. While they passionately embraced key aspects of Americanization—the English language, American history, democratic political ideas, and citizenship—they also found in American democracy a defense of their cultural differences. In seeing no conflict between their sense of themselves as Italians, or Germans, or Poles, and Americans, they helped to create a new and inclusive vision of this country.Mirel vividly retells the epic story of one of the great achievements of American education, which has profound implications for the Americanization of immigrants today.

This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americanization as a War Measure, Vol. 18: Report of a Conference Called by the Secretary of the Interior, and Held in Washington, April 3, 1918 You are men of iron and steel, and wood and copper. You are men who deal with these material things which go to make up the great prosperity of this country, but fundamentally each one of you is a religious leader. Each one of you has in his soul a mystical quantity which represents your Americanism. There is something bigger and finer in everyone of us than the individual himself. That thing that is finer is the thing that prompts us to do the work that we are doing; and why are we working; why are we strivmg; why are we fighting on the other side to-day? Because of a divine dissatisfaction within our own souls. We are compelled to move on and on by something that we know not of. That is the essence of Americanism.' Take out of our hearts the belief that the Battle Hymn of the Republic is true, that God's truth is marching on, and you defeat America; but until you take that from us, I care not what the battles of the world may show - the spirit of America, the real America can not be beaten in battle. I want to get into your hearts, if I can at this time, a passion for Americanism, not only because Americanism is the Spirit of our country, but because Americanism is the most advanced spirit that has come to man's spirit from above. Book Studies in American Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in American Education Classic Reprint written by Albert Bushnell Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in American Education The six essays which make up this volume have been prepared at various times and deal with a variety of subjects. Nevertheless there is between them a thread of connection and re lation. They all are based upon two funda mental ideas: that education is substantially one from beginning to end, so that the same or similar methods may be applied throughout; and that teachers of every grade and subject have a common interest and may learn from each other. They are the outcome of a desire to make some small contribution to the great common fund of experience. That so many of these essays deal with the problems of the primary and secondary schools needs no apology. Every American must feel an interest in the systems which reach the great est number of pupils, and lay the foundations for later study. A short service in the Cam bridge School Committee has taught some thing of the aims and practical difficulties of primary and secondary education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germanization and Americanization: Compared Some years ago a Western priest, pious and erudite, applied skillfully the knife to the canker of uncanonical treatment of priests. He wielded his mighty pen against arbitrary power and the evils flowing therefrom. That he was successful in rooting out the undermining influence of despotism needs no elaborate discussion a simple perusal of the decrees of the III. Plenary Council of Baltimore is sufficient. The Council embodied in its legislation laws tending to abolish the abuse of power, against which the mighty canonical warrior alluded to above wielded the weapon of his intellect. The learned doctor, fully equipped with the instruments of Canon Law, and the higher law of charity and justice, was submissive to established authority. He was apprehensive that his disclosures would give birth to higher handed exercise of Czarism, in its most odious and aggravated form still he braved the raging, fuming, and threatening monster with sang-froia' born of an equitable cause. The justice of his undertaking necessarily involved the idea of success. Before sending his book on a mission of mercy, he challenged the world to show a phrase or line not in perfect accord with faith, morals, discipline, or Christian charity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To the American Student: An Open Letter So far, unhappily, America has taken over without fundamental correction those basic conceptions of the methods of human association which have shaped and colored and which explain the character of older European society; and so long as the intellectual foundations are the same, built upon the same mechan ism, guided by the same principles, the structure is pretty certain to possess the same deep-seated defects of more imposing appearance perhaps, with the paint a bit fresher, but with all the dangers none the less real and none the less failing to fulfil the needs and aspirations of its builders. Now if at this point you hurry on to see what this Open letter really is about and conclude that it deals with the problem of war and international peace, you will wonder why I have indulged in this portentous introduction which you may deem to have little rele vance to that problem.
