Book An American in Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book An American in Germany Classic Reprint written by E. E. Pattou and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American in Germany Many Americans who have studied German for some years, and even those who are thoroughly familiar with the grammar and who translate readily, have had the experience of finding themselves, on arrival in Germany, totally incapable of carrying on a conversation in the language. The vocabulary of everyday life seems somehow to have been omitted in the composition of the usual grammar exercises, while the classical reading, required for college or Regent's examinations, is of even less practical assistance to persons desirous of speaking modern German. The requirement in regard to oral work, which was recently introduced by the New York Board of Regents, reveals, however, a healthy trend toward more practical methods. In preparing this volume, in which a total of about four thousand words is introduced, I have aimed to equip students with the usual vocabulary of the modern educated German; thus preparing them both for profitable and pleasurable sojourning in Germany and for a better appreciation of their readings in modern German. The phraseology of everyday life in its various relations: of the theatre, the shop, the hotel, society, comment on music, art, books, and so forth, is illustrated in typical conversations. Each idiom is employed, unobtrusively, not less than three separate times, a repetition which, as psychologists tell us, "makes it our own." Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Traits: From the Point of View of a German The following essays are not scholarly studies, but light sketches drawn in leisure hours by a German who has pitched his tent among the Americans and become interested in the differences between the Americans and the Germans. But my interest in that contrast is not merely a theoretical one: I believe that these two nations can and ought to learn from each other, and that in this case even the protectionists of national civilization ought not to favor a prohibitive tariff on foreign ideals. Such mutual instruction has been hindered by prejudices and misunderstandings: the two nations do not know each other sufficiently, although they are connected by innumerable ties from the past and will need each other's good will still more in the years to come. To root out such prejudices and to facilitate mutual benefit, it becomes a duty to measure critically the culture of the one country by the ideals of the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany Embattled: An American Interpretation Q self-control and be found worthy of a crisis which had revealed the entire nation so united and determined as to wipe out in a moment all differences of rank, religion, and party. To de scribe that hour of self-abnegation and self sacrifice many a gifted writer and man of affairs has found himself utterly at a loss. The thrill and the uplift born of its whole-souled devotion wrenched the populace loose from the purely personal considerations of life and stirred them with all the enthusiasm which comes from a readiness to die for a common cause. The psychology of the crowd was at its noblest height. Even the foreign spectators caught in the sudden swirl of vast, loosened reservoirs of national feeling found it impossible to observe, save with awe, conviction, and deep emotion, this profoundly impressive transformation of a people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German-American's Confession of Faith In view of the bitter and ill informed criticism which my stand during the present war has evoked from many Germans and German-Americans, I think it a duty both to myself and to the cause which I represent to bring together at least some of the documents in which my course of action is contained. They consist of articles and other kinds of contributions to various magazines and newspapers between October 1914 and May 1915, dealing successively with the following topics: the moral and spiritual forces of contemporary Germany, the question of American neutrality, the duties of German-Americans both toward the land of their fathers and their adopted country, the mission of America for the peace of Europe. Slight as are these contributions to the literature of the great world conflict that engulfs us, they are at least inspired by the endeavor to be loyal to obligations old and new. For he is convinced that no American whose goodwill he would wish to gain or retain, applies the pro-english or anti-english, the pro-irish or anti-irish, the pro French or anti-french, the pro-german or anti German test to his Americanism or to that of his acquaintances. Should the time ever come, Which God forbid, when it no longer suffices to cherish an intelligent understanding of the principles on which American institutions were founded, a sturdy faith in them and an active loyalty to them, then lordly judgments will be in order and America will be come a meaningless word. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At Large in Germany It is this latter character, this alter ego, who is so talkative about his ideas and his impressions in the following. It is the Average American who sees, who enjoys, and who scoffs. It is true that no one (not even the author himself) cares about the personal ego; when he shaves, with whom he bunks at night, and how he enjoys his dinners. But when this important figure, the Average American, so often mentioned of late but never met, so much quoted but never heard, when he is near unto seasickness, or when he is bored, we listen attentively. Nothing in the life of this great hero is too insignificant for our notice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
