Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features an article that intends to present a uniform algebraic structure for Moufang quadrangles, and to classify these structures without referring back to the original Moufang quadrangles from which they arise, thereby also giving a new proof for the classification of Moufang quadrangles, which does consist of the division into these 2 parts.

Book An Algebraic Structure for Moufang Quadrangles

Download or read book An Algebraic Structure for Moufang Quadrangles written by Tom de Medts and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very recently, the classification of Moufang polygons has been completed by Tits and Weiss. Moufang $n$-gons exist for $n \in \{3, 4, 6, 8 \}$ only. For $n \in \{3, 6, 8 \}$, the proof is nicely divided into two parts: first, it is shown that a Moufang $n$-gon can be parametrized by a certain interesting algebraic structure, and secondly, these algebraic structures are classified. The classification of Moufang quadrangles $(n=4)$ is not organized in this way due to the absence of a suitable algebraic structure. The goal of this article is to present such a uniform algebraic structure for Moufang quadrangles, and to classify these structures without referring back to the original Moufang quadrangles from which they arise, thereby also providing a new proof for the classification of Moufang quadrangles, which does consist of the division into these two parts. We hope that these algebraic structures will prove to be interesting in their own right.

Book Quadrangular Algebras MN 46

Download or read book Quadrangular Algebras MN 46 written by Richard M. Weiss and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a new class of non-associative algebras related to certain exceptional algebraic groups and their associated buildings. Richard Weiss develops a theory of these "quadrangular algebras" that opens the first purely algebraic approach to the exceptional Moufang quadrangles. These quadrangles include both those that arise as the spherical buildings associated to groups of type E6, E7, and E8 as well as the exotic quadrangles "of type F4" discovered earlier by Weiss. Based on their relationship to exceptional algebraic groups, quadrangular algebras belong in a series together with alternative and Jordan division algebras. Formally, the notion of a quadrangular algebra is derived from the notion of a pseudo-quadratic space (introduced by Jacques Tits in the study of classical groups) over a quaternion division ring. This book contains the complete classification of quadrangular algebras starting from first principles. It also shows how this classification can be made to yield the classification of exceptional Moufang quadrangles as a consequence. The book closes with a chapter on isotopes and the structure group of a quadrangular algebra. Quadrangular Algebras is intended for graduate students of mathematics as well as specialists in buildings, exceptional algebraic groups, and related algebraic structures including Jordan algebras and the algebraic theory of quadratic forms.

Book Translation Generalized Quadrangles

Download or read book Translation Generalized Quadrangles written by Joseph Adolf Thas and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation generalized quadrangles play a key role in the theory of generalized quadrangles, comparable to the role of translation planes in the theory of projective and affine planes. The notion of translation generalized quadrangle is a local analogue of the more global OC Moufang ConditionOCO, a topic of great interest, also due to the classification of all Moufang polygons. Attention is thus paid to recent results in that direction, but also many of the most important results in the general theory of generalized quadrangles that appeared since 1984 are treated. Translation Generalized Quadrangles is essentially self-contained, as the reader is only expected to be familiar with some basic facts on finite generalized quadrangles. Proofs that are either too long or too technical are left out, or just sketched. The three standard works on generalized quadrangles are (co-)authored by the writers of this book: OC Finite Generalized QuadranglesOCO (1984) by S E Payne and J A Thas, OC Generalized PolygonsOCO (1998) by H Van Maldeghem, and OC Symmetry in Finite Generalized QuadranglesOCO (2004) by K Thas. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Generalized Quadrangles (127 KB). Contents: Generalized Quadrangles; Regularity, Antiregularity and 3-Regularity; Elation and Translation Generalized Quadrangles; Generalized Quadrangles and Flocks; Good Eggs; Generalized Quadrangles, Nets and the Axiom of Veblen; Ovoids and Subquadrangles; Translation Generalized Ovals; Moufang Sets and Translation Moufang Sets; Configurations of Translation Points; Moufang Quadrangles with a Translation Point; Translation Ovoids in Translation Quadrangles; Translation Generalized Quadrangles in Projective Space; Open Problems. Readership: Researchers in incidence geometry, combinatorics and finite geometries. Also suitable as a textbook for a graduate course.

Book Rigidity and Symmetry

Download or read book Rigidity and Symmetry written by Robert Connelly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains recent contributions to the fields of rigidity and symmetry with two primary focuses: to present the mathematically rigorous treatment of rigidity of structures and to explore the interaction of geometry, algebra and combinatorics. Contributions present recent trends and advances in discrete geometry, particularly in the theory of polytopes. The rapid development of abstract polytope theory has resulted in a rich theory featuring an attractive interplay of methods and tools from discrete geometry, group theory, classical geometry, hyperbolic geometry and topology. Overall, the book shows how researchers from diverse backgrounds explore connections among the various discrete structures with symmetry as the unifying theme. The volume will be a valuable source as an introduction to the ideas of both combinatorial and geometric rigidity theory and its applications, incorporating the surprising impact of symmetry. It will appeal to students at both the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as post docs, structural engineers and chemists.

Book General Galois Geometries

Download or read book General Galois Geometries written by James Hirschfeld and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second edition of the third and last volume of a treatise on projective spaces over a finite field, also known as Galois geometries. This volume completes the trilogy comprised of plane case (first volume) and three dimensions (second volume). This revised edition includes much updating and new material. It is a mostly self-contained study of classical varieties over a finite field, related incidence structures and particular point sets in finite n-dimensional projective spaces. General Galois Geometries is suitable for PhD students and researchers in combinatorics and geometry. The separate chapters can be used for courses at postgraduate level.

Book Finite Generalized Quadrangles

Download or read book Finite Generalized Quadrangles written by Stanley E. Payne and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2009 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generalized quadrangles (GQ) were formally introduced by J. Tits in 1959 to describe geometric properties of simple groups of Lie type of rank 2. The first edition of Finite Generalized Quadrangles (FGQ) quickly became the standard reference for finite GQ. The second edition is essentially a reprint of the first edition. It is a careful rendering into LaTeX of the original, along with an appendix that brings to the attention of the reader those major new results pertaining to GQ, especially in those areas where the authors of this work have made a contribution. The first edition has been out of print for many years. The new edition makes available again this classical reference in the rapidly increasing field of finite geometries.

Book An Analogue of a Reductive Algebraic Monoid Whose Unit Group Is a Kac Moody Group

Download or read book An Analogue of a Reductive Algebraic Monoid Whose Unit Group Is a Kac Moody Group written by Claus Mokler and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By an easy generalization of the Tannaka-Krein reconstruction we associate to the category of admissible representations of the category ${\mathcal O}$ of a Kac-Moody algebra, and its category of admissible duals, a monoid with a coordinate ring. The Kac-Moody group is the Zariski open dense unit group of this monoid. The restriction of the coordinate ring to the Kac-Moody group is the algebra of strongly regular functions introduced by V. Kac and D. Peterson. This monoid has similar structural properties as a reductive algebraic monoid. In particular it is unit regular, its idempotents related to the faces of the Tits cone. It has Bruhat and Birkhoff decompositions. The Kac-Moody algebra is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of this monoid.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution operator for the Lax-Phillips scattering system is an isometric representation of the Cuntz algebra, while the nonnegative time axis for the conservative, linear system is the free semigroup on $d$ letters. This title presents a multivariable setting for Lax-Phillips scattering and for conservative, discrete-time, linear systems.

Book Generative Complexity in Algebra

Download or read book Generative Complexity in Algebra written by Joel Berman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considers the behavior of $\mathrm{G}_\mathcal{C}(k)$ when $\mathcal{C}$ is a locally finite equational class (variety) of algebras and $k$ is finite. This title looks at ways that algebraic properties of $\mathcal{C}$ lead to upper or lower bounds on generative complexity.

Book Measure Theoretic Laws for lim sup Sets

Download or read book Measure Theoretic Laws for lim sup Sets written by Victor Beresnevich Detta Dickinson Sanju Velani and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given a compact metric space $(\Omega,d)$ equipped with a non-atomic, probability measure $m$ and a positive decreasing function $\psi$, we consider a natural class of lim sup subsets $\Lambda(\psi)$ of $\Omega$. The classical lim sup set $W(\psi)$ of `$\psi$-approximable' numbers in the theory of metric Diophantine approximation fall within this class. We establish sufficient conditions (which are also necessary under some natural assumptions) for the $m$-measure of $\Lambda(\psi)$ to be either positive or full in $\Omega$ and for the Hausdorff $f$-measure to be infinite. The classical theorems of Khintchine-Groshev and Jarnik concerning $W(\psi)$ fall into our general framework. The main results provide a unifying treatment of numerous problems in metric Diophantine approximation including those for real, complex and $p$-adic fields associated with both independent and dependent quantities. Applications also include those to Kleinian groups and rational maps. Compared to previous works our framework allows us to successfully remove many unnecessary conditions and strengthen fundamental results such as Jarnik's theorem and the Baker-Schmidt theorem. In particular, the strengthening of Jarnik's theorem opens up the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture for Hausdorff measures.

Book Asymptotic Behaviour of Tame Harmonic Bundles and an Application to Pure Twistor D Modules Part 2

Download or read book Asymptotic Behaviour of Tame Harmonic Bundles and an Application to Pure Twistor D Modules Part 2 written by Takuro Mochizuki and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author studies the asymptotic behaviour of tame harmonic bundles. First he proves a local freeness of the prolongment of deformed holomorphic bundle by an increasing order. Then he obtains the polarized mixed twistor structure from the data on the divisors. As one of the applications, he obtains the norm estimate of holomorphic or flat sections by weight filtrations of the monodromies. As another application, the author establishes the correspondence of semisimple regularholonomic $D$-modules and polarizable pure imaginary pure twistor $D$-modules through tame pure imaginary harmonic bundles, which is a conjecture of C. Sabbah. Then the regular holonomic version of M. Kashiwara's conjecture follows from the results of Sabbah and the author.

Book Tangential Boundary Stabilization of Navier Stokes Equations

Download or read book Tangential Boundary Stabilization of Navier Stokes Equations written by Viorel Barbu and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to inject dissipation as to force local exponential stabilization of the steady-state solutions, an Optimal Control Problem (OCP) with a quadratic cost functional over an infinite time-horizon is introduced for the linearized N-S equations. As a result, the same Riccati-based, optimal boundary feedback controller which is obtained in the linearized OCP is then selected and implemented also on the full N-S system. For $d=3$, the OCP falls definitely outside the boundaries of established optimal control theory for parabolic systems with boundary controls, in that the combined index of unboundedness--between the unboundedness of the boundary control operator and the unboundedness of the penalization or observation operator--is strictly larger than $\tfrac{3}{2}$, as expressed in terms of fractional powers of the free-dynamics operator. In contrast, established (and rich) optimal control theory [L-T.2] of boundary control parabolic problems and corresponding algebraic Riccati theory requires a combined index of unboundedness strictly less than 1. An additional preliminary serious difficulty to overcome lies at the outset of the program, in establishing that the present highly non-standard OCP--with the aforementioned high level of unboundedness in control and observation operators and subject, moreover, to the additional constraint that the controllers be pointwise tangential--be non-empty; that is, it satisfies the so-called Finite Cost Condition [L-T.2].
